Dale follows the road into the grove of beautiful golden trees.   He has never seen anything like them before.   As he travels the road up the Goldleaf Ridge, he imagines himself as Valekai, seeing this surreal scene for the very first time.    Did he appreciate the beauty that was about him?  Or was his mind so demented that he could not even focus on the trees?   Seeing the beauty of the land around him makes Dale want to protect it.   He desperately hopes that he can uncover Valekai's secrets, but he most certainly does not want to destroy this place to do it.

As if snapping out of a reverie, Dale looks around him and notices a large flat boulder, the height of a table.   "This rock will be perfect to write upon.  I wonder if I can find something to sit on?"   Dale begins to search on top of the ridge for a small boulder or stump that could serve as a stool.

With a slight grunt, Dale picks up the heavy boulder and carries it to the larger table like rock in the center of the grove.   Once there, he pulls out his writing tools, quills, ink and parchment.   He smooths the parchment out across the rock and dips a quill in the ink.   After a moment to collect his thoughts, he begins to write in a flowing script.

The language Dale writes in is rarely used these days.   As a matter of fact, Dale might be killed if the wrong people discover that he is capable of writing this script.   His mentor and benefactor had her home destroyed by those that would rid the world of magic.

Dale hopes to change how people perceive magic.  It is a tool.  No different than a sword.  The sword can be used for good or evil.  But the sword itself is neither good or bad.  It is simply a tool.  Just like magic.

Dale banishes these thoughts from his mind as he begins to write the spell onto the scroll.   "Whisparnum zaltinum se kaltinum zorst...

The young arcanist becomes lost in the crafting of the scroll.   For hours he is lost to the world, completely focused on his task.   He continues to write as if the world around him does not exist.   A troop of Xan Thakian soldiers could walk right by him and he would not even notice.

Is this after Dale has completed the scroll?  Because he will not stop unless his life is threatened.   The scroll has to be written in one sitting.

Dale stands up from his makeshift table.   He lifts his arms high over his head and twists his torso in a stretch.   Then he shakes his legs out.   After feeling the blood flow back to his extremities, Dale pulled out his scroll case from his pack.   Very gently, the aspiring arcanist rolled his newly written scroll and placed it in his case.

After placing the scroll case back in his pack, he slings the pack over his shoulder and takes a slow searching look about his surroundings.   Not seeing anything, he cautiously moves through the goldleaf trees toward the direction where he last heard the spritely sound...

Trying to catch up to the girl without scaring her, Dale moves quickly towards the girl in a non-threatening manner.  "Hello," he shouts to the girl.   "Who are you?"  Dale makes sure to show that his hands are empty and that he bears no ill will.

Dale simply turns and follows the sprite.  "Wait.   Can we talk?"

"And then she reared her ugly head and devoured Dale!"

Dale follows the girl, trying to take note of where he is going, so that he doesn't get lost.   He also checks his weapons.  He's heard too many tales of a beautiful woman luring a man to his death in a secluded forest.
"Where are you taking me?"

Again, Dale follows the young girl with extreme caution.    Yet he is very curious, so he tries to catch up to her.   All the while keeping an eye out for a trap.

"If I enter, will you let me leave?   Are you an angel?   How long has it been since someone has visited this grove?"   Dale starts to review all the things he has ever learned about Sorcer Nyx.    He wonders if this is the same "Nyx".   Or is it somehow different?

Taking a leap of faith that belies Dale's aggressive nature, he grasps the girl's hand and steps towards the tree.   He prays to any god who is listening that he will live to tell the tale of this encounter.

Dale takes his boots off.   Hoping his feet won't stink up the pure air of the nymph's wonderous home.   He graciously accepts the water and takes a sip.  The water tastes very much akin to the water he drank with Ashe and Maccabeus at the Ring.   Akin yet different.   He wonders who this sprite really is...

"Thank you for your hospitality.    Umm... Uh.. Well, how should I address you?"

"My name is Dalyhas Bal X'ulnathra.   I am from Kazbourne.

I'm curious about Nyx.   I've read of Nyx before, but I didn't completely understand what I read.   Would you please tell me of Nyx?"

Dale leans forward, eager to hear the fey's answer.

"I am a man of many skills.   My heart yearns for justice, adventure, and friendship.   Yet all I can say for myself is that I have found adventure.   I seek knowledge and wisdom.   Specifically, I want to learn of Valekai and  to master magic.   Yet I do not want to suffer the delusions that he did.   I value nature and peace.  I do not wish to bring strife to the land.

"I was a street rat.  My education began as an outlaw in the streets of Kazbourne.   Because of the atrocities I suffered, I look to protect those who are weak.   That is why being a member of the Threshold Protectorate agrees with me.

"I was a flegling member of a coven of arcanists.   The coven is now disbanded.   My only friend Xen Castallis has left to go to the elven homeland.   My mother is dead and my father hunts me.   My mentor was slain while protecting me.   "All that I was is destroyed.   All that I am is changing.   All that I will become is just now being built..."  My master used to say this again and again.  It is true of me as well..."

Remembering all the pain in his life Dale silently wishes to do some lasting good in this world.   Maybe he can protect Threshold...as a start.  He looks into the eyes of Whisper and a gleam of hope shines in his eye.   Maybe she will steer him onto a path of righteous glory.
