Title: Session 11.1 - The Escape
Post by: Dray on April 03, 2006, 12:46:51 PM
One moment, the adventurers were standing in the middle of the Lizardfolk massacre, the next, somewhere else, with nothing in between except the speaking of the command word by Azarian.

They stood in an ancient ruined city, one of marble that was slowly losing its battle against time and encroaching nature. Above them was an open and clear night sky, the light of the moon bathing the city square where they stood.

Dariooq, Scale, Erinalia, and Azarian all stood motionless over Garbhan?s unconscious form as the shock of teleporting past them.

The staff that they all touched was now lightly smoking and charred from top to bottom, everyone but Azarian instinctively let go. Azarian in turn, raised it in front of him to look at it closer, and was quickly enraged.

?Damn it!? he said as he threw the staff at a nearby boulder, upon which the now brittle piece of wood splintered into dozens of pieces.

Scale makes no outward reaction.

Erin stood up straight, obviously feeling much better.  "Thank you Azarian..." Then realizing the what she had just done...

"Oh my!  Great Mother, forgive me!  Scale will hate me now!" She glanced nervously in the direction of the intimidating lizardman.  "I'm so sorry!  Is this bad?  What can I do to set it right?"

She then began to quickly gather her scattered belongings (the bandages, salves and her quarterstaff).

Scale grimmaced. "I'll not be carrying that bag."

Dariooq's head snapped around at the sound of Erinalia's retching.

His eyes widened to their fullest, and he looked at Scale. "If blood on this ground is bad, that certainly can't be good." He said.

Azarian moved quickly to Erinalia's crumpled form.

"I am so sorry Erinalia, I was caught up in the heat of the moment," he pleaded as he once again reached into his spell component pouch and pulled a bit of charcoal from it.

He spoke divine words of power while touching the young woman on the head.

Erinalia felt the searing fire of the poison instantly leave her body, her nauscious stomach seemed to settle immediate with the departure.

Erin finally responded as Garbh?n took her by the arm and helped her up to her feet.  Her eyes were red and puffy from crying, but her face was also much paler than normal.

"I'm sorry... I don't feel very well, Garbh?n," was all she could say.  She swayed unsteadily on her feet for a moment before suddenly doubling over and vomiting the contents of her stomach upon the sacred ground before her.

Garbh?n nodded his thanks to the two island barbarians and moved unsteadily to Erinalia.  His combat wounds were partially healed, and the effects of the poison from the crossbow bolts still weakened him.

"Come, Erin.  Come to your feet," he spoke gently to her as he reached for her elbow.

Dariooq moved a bit ahead of Scale, scouting the point for signs of hostility. He still gripped his Great Axe tightly and ready for use.

Scale began to leave in the direction of his village. "Perhaps we will find the body of your friend."

Erinalia did not move to get up.  Instead she just sat upon the ground with shoulders slumped - seemingly defeated.  Tears streamed down her face.  Her sobbing continued, though it had quieted down a bit.

She did not seem to hear or take notice of their conversation...

"I know you did not intend for this," Scale said. "This is what I mean by your disrepect for the unknown and arrogance. You do have great skill, but even you must practice more caution." The accusation was no longer a part of Scale's voice. He was simply stating what he believed was fact.

"To return to my village would take a some time. {ooc: 6 or 7 hours} I suggest we move out of these ruins, and rest. We should not approach my village in the dark."

Scale turned to regard Garbh?n. "Your skin is thick," he said. A common compliment amoung the hunters and warriors in Scale's tribe.

Azarian's tone was one of constraint.

"As I had stated, teleportive magics are unpredictable on this island. We are not supposed to be here, we are supposed to be near the Gate which is underground!"

He then looked around for an enemy unseen, realizing he was shouting, he brought his voice down considerably.

"But your words ring true Scale, we must make haste and depart from this city."

He looked over at the distraught Erinalia. "Shall we return to your village? Find the survivors?"

Scale climbed up a fallen column to look around the area. After a moment his throat rumbled lowly, a sign Dariooq had come to know as a warning of impending danger, or a realization of a threat.

"This is not good," the reptillian said flatly. "These ruins stretch on beyond the edge of the moonlight." He jumped down, "They very well may be here after all."

Scale began speaking to everyone though mostly to Dariooq. "The Poison Dusk worship a goddess, whose name escapes me at the moment. These ruins are forbidden to any who do not worship this same goddess."

Scale swung his head to Azarian, "And here we are right in the middle of them." His glare was no acusatory. Scale had done his chiding already and was satisfied that his points were made and taken. This was more a look of warning to someone who knew what it meant to offend a god.

Scale looked back to everyone else. "Do not bleed on this ground, that is forbidden."

Dariooq grabbed Garbhan by the armor and hauled him to his feet, even as Scale was assisting the horseman.

"This is the sacred place for the Poison Dusk?" He asked his long-time friend. "I would have thought that they would have been here, since they were not at their village." The tall darfellen looked about for signs of recent habitation. My die roller came up with a "2", unmodified. "You're right; we are in a ruins. I didn't notice that. But where, then, are the Duskers?" He wondered aloud.

Scale turned his attention on the sobbing girl. ?Why are you crying!?? Scale demanded hotly. ?You have lost just one friend! I have lost everything!! Everyone I have known all my life with the exception of Dariooq and his tribe! You have no reason to mourn!?

Scale snarled at the group. ?It is the most foolish recklessness which governs your actions! You have no respect for that which you do not know, and when it is too much for you, you cry and feel sorry for yourselves! You are not dead! Now is not the time to mourn! We must be on our way and out of the sacred lands of the Poison Dusk, before we anger their ancestral spirits! We will not live through that.?

Scale?s glare turned back to Azarian. ?Not even your god would save you for this intrusion. I suggest we be on our way. Spirits walk in the night.?

Scale's demeanor seemed to change from annoyed to that of a man with a job to do; an air of duty. "None of us are safe here."

He extended a hand to the battle scarred Garbh?n to help him to his feet. "Can you fight again?" Scale's tone changed yet again when talking to Garbh?n. "Your strength will be needed if we are to get out of here alive."

Garbh?n sat with a confused expression.  "Escaped?"  He tried to stand, but the soreness from his wounds kept him seated.  He glanced around at the setting.  "Where are we?"

Garbh?n made no motion or spoke no words of comfort to Erinalia.  He took notice of the other individuals standing nearby.  "Dariooq.  Scale.  Help me to my feet.  Azarian, where are we?"

Erin had fumbled hopelessly with her salves and bandages, clearly flustered, until Azarian?s healing spell took effect.  She then suddenly dropped the paraphanalia on Garbh?n?s chest.

As Garbh?n awakened and sat up the bandages rolled off of his chest and onto the ground.

?We... we have not won... We escaped,? she replied to his question.

A lump formed in her throat and she forced herself to continue.

?T?Riad is gone!? she blurted out.  ?He may be dead...  I don?t know if he made it out of the tent!?

With that, Erin finally broke down.  With shoulders and back slumped and her head hung low, she began sobbing - just mildly at first, and then uncontrollably, as she brought her hands up to cover her face.

The battle had been a horrific scene to her eyes and now, all of a sudden,  distant memories of the destruction of her childhood home came flooding into her mind.  People were murdered... There was so much suffering... And to see this all again, here, so many years later was almost too much for her to bear.

Garbh?n slowly opened his eyes and stared at the night sky.  He remembered being on a battlefield, and he remembered being hit by crossbow bolts.  That seemed to have happened so long ago.

He sat up, holding his head.  "Is it over?  Did we win?" he asked, looking around.

Azarian held his tongue, attempting to quelch his own anger against the feeling of helplessness.

He let Scale walk away.

With a gaze of incredible frustration he looked to the others. "Does anyone else need further healing?"

Scale's outward appearances didn't change at all, though his breath slowed a bit. "I do not trust you, human." Scale turns to the others, "Nor any of you either!" his vioce boomed.

"But my elders allowed you to live and speak your own language under their tents, therefore you are not my enemy." his muscled arms trembled with ire.

"But understand this servant of the gods, I bare no allegiance to you or your people."

He stopped yelling to think. " I am no fool, I know my people are dead now, and if any escaped they will shun me for a coward! And now we stand here in what looks like he ancestral ruins of the Poison Dusk, where we do not belong!"

" I will stay with you long enough to make sure that you get back to your pathetic camp where you can do no more harm, because for some reason, my elders considered you a peer."

"Once you get back there, you pray you do not wander into my path again, for we shall not meet as friends."

Scale hissed and spit on the ground at Azairian's feet, a great act of disrespect in scale's now-extinct culture. He turned his back on the humans and began to walk.

Azarian glared back at Scale, knowing that a barbarian would only listen to a matching show of strength.

"Coward?! Hold your tongue man!" he yelled. "We would be back there now if it wasn't for this damned islands magic!"

Scale made a step towards him, he didn't back away.

"Did you not see that where we stood we were surrounded and of no help to those who were fleeing?! Had this island not destroyed my staff," he shouted pointing behind him at the boulder without taking his gaze off the angered barbarian, "we would have instantly returned to help!"

Azarian looked as angry as Scale. Scale hesitated a moment just enough for Azarian to say one thing more.

"Do not see the enemy in me Scale, see it in those Hobgoblin cowards."

"You understand me now you coward!? How dare you forsake my people after they let you stay in their tents!?" Scale began to growl louder. "You must send me back, they are dying! They need me!"

Azarian quickly glanced at all to assess the situation.

He quickly reached into his spell pouch at his belt and gathered the necessary materials. With haste he cast a spell and immediately started to speak Jhaegra Common. A language that both Dariooq, Scale and surprisingly Erinalia had shown familiarity with.

"Forgive me, I know not what you have spoken thus far Scale." He said solemnly. "And I am so sorry about your people."

He said this and gave the lizard man a look of deepest sympathy. Without waiting for a response he summoned the required devine words and called upon another spell.

A glowing hemisperhical wall of golden energy rushed from the center of his being and in a flash expanded outwards over the entire group. This healing spell had been cast while in battle and was quite effective. Crossbow bolts flew out of wounds that sealed up, and the gaping slashes across Garbhan's chest contracted into mere scratches.

[Everyone here gets 22 hit points from this spell.]

The fin on Scale's head began to twitch. "if you don't send me back you squishy pink..." Scale forced himself to stop yelling, but continued his low growl and menacing pose.

"Auugh!" Erinalia let out a throaty gasp of pain as she collapsed to her knees at Garbhan's side.  A crossbow bolt that had struck her just moments before Azerian had activated the staff now protruded out from her left leather shoulder pad.  Blood oozed out from beneath the shoulder pad and dripped down along her side.  Though not life-threatening, the wound was deep enough to cause her significant pain as well as some dizziness.  She actually felt as though she were weakening more and more as each drop of blood escaped from her body...

Ignoring the pain as best as she could, the half-elf turned her attention to Garbhan, who lay montionless upon the ground before her.  She immediatley began fishing through her well-organized bag to locate the salves and bandages she would need to stabilize his wounds.  As soon as she had the necessary items in hand she set to work, letting the others worry about figuring out exactly where they were.  As a matter of fact, she was so absorbed in her work on her critically injured companion, that she had taken no notice at all of their new surroundings.

"Come, let us get away from here and get some rest." Azarian submitted.

"Since the staff was the key to using the ancient gates on this island, we can no longer pass through them and direct which gate we wish to go too. So I am thinking we should go back to Scale's village and look for survivors." Azarian said with a look of disgust at the shattered staff on the ground.

"Having more allies while we search for the way home would be welcome."

Dariooq's far-away look faded from his face. The little human seemed to make a good suggestion, although it had seemed a year since this night started, he could scarcely recall what had happened.

hehe.

After a look at the night sky, Azarian began to lead the adventurers away from the city square. Scale watched him start in the direction he was going and fell in beside him.

Erinalia, Garbha'n, and Dariooq followed. All were healed but weary, now that the blood rush incurred by this night's battle had diminished. 'If only the memories of the battle would diminish', though Erinalia. The image of the white hot oil from above cutting through the lizard woman who had been sleeping beside her in the tent was one she would not forget.

As they walked northerly, with Scale now nervously scouting a dozen paces ahead, the adventurers passed remnants of what could only be a ruined city built by giants. Enormous buildings which were devastated from some unknown ancient war stood in various states against the testiment of time and encroaching jungle.

Scale ducked, slithered and ran along the city roadways, hiding behind statues, fountains, and rubble while cautiously looking about. Each hiding spot he left the companions occupied, as they made their way slowly to the city's outer wall. An enormous structure that interupted the canopy of stars with it's massive bulk.

They were headed to a gate so huge, the Endeavor could sail through it.
