The day is quite young as Garret begins to prepare for the morning rush, which he doesn't expect to be too busy. Laren strolls up to the counter, climbing (literally) into a bar stool. "Good morning Mr. Garret!

Garret goes into the back and returns quickly with a plate of meat, eggs, and dried fruit "well, if he did get killed he didn't go down without a fight, i can tell you that. Listen, i'll reach out and see what people know. the Hawks are widespread...little happens without us knowing something. Take heart Laren...we'll find out what happened."

Laren sits and hopes some words of encouragement come from Garret, who seems to be a bit busy...

Laren draws a deep breath and answers "He was only to be a day behind me. I believe that Crimson got the best of him. I'm afraid that he may be dead."

Garret looks at Laren, "yes, i do know him. the three of us joined the 'Order of the Hawk' about your age...Eldan, your father, and me. it was our adopted family...he was like my brother. i remember seeing you when you were born. i would give my life for your father. we went through much together. you have much of his look." with concerned eyes Garret continues, "is your father in trouble? when was he to arrive?"

"Good, you are as preceptive as I had though," Laren said with a relieved look on his face. He sits back and says "I do not know what this ring means, but I knew what my father was, and if the two are related, I'd say I've got a good idea... My father's name was Alton {Laren's last name} Did you know him?

Garret leans forward and says, "if that ring you wear is any indication of what your father did for a living did then he didn't necessarily work for the city, methinks."

Garret pulls up his little right hand and shows Laren the exact same signet ring on his middle finger. The black metal ring has the outline of a hawk on it's round face. "do you know what secrets dwell behind these rings? if you don't, my guess is that you soon will, my friend. what was your father's name?"

"Well..." Laren leans forward on the counter, motioning to Garret to come closer himself. "My father was of pretty high importance in that town. He had a job with the city government... He was incharge of covert operations, so to the general public, he doesn't really exist!"

Laren pauses, takes a gulp and sits back a little when he feels he's got Garret's attention.

"He was given an assignment, to steal plans from a known mob boss, and things went sour. The mobe was on to him, and he split. He was afraid that they would know about me, so he told me to come wait here for him."

Laren looks into his beer, glancing quickly back up at Garret to see of the bar keep was buying the half-baked story. Laren sort of hoped that he didn't believe it wholly. He liked Garret, and hoped he was as preceptive as Laren thought he was.

"Well, originally I'm from the city of Kurr. Speaking of which, I've been waiting here for my father... there hasn't been another Harlfling around looking for me that you've heard of... I know patrons talk alot when their lips are filled with alcohol."

Y'know, that one of my favorite dishes!"

Garret gives Laren a pint of dark frothy stout. then goes into the kitchen. Eldan comes out "Laren! great to see you in one piece! we heard about what happened with the kids...strange thing it is...them changing into rats. were there only three?" Garret sniifs, "are you burning the food?" "oh, my Sardior let me get back to the kitchen!" Garret continues on his pipe and says, "so Garret, where are you from originally?"

"Well, that sounds delightfull! The smell is so intoxicating it could wake the de.. Oof!... Something in my eye..." Laren begins to rub his eye a little trying to pick the errant partical out. He is using his ring finger, subtilly making sure that Garret sees the ring.

"Ah, there... got it." Laren blinks and smiles "Eyelash... little bugger. They say that it's good luck you know, an eyelash falling into your eye. Tis a sign of good fortune!" Laren cracks the knucles on his right hand, again flashing the ring inconspicously.

"As I was saying good sir, I'll have some whatever's on the grill. And a Beer-Omlet! ... Hold the eggs!"

As Laren calls out to Garret he can smell some meat and onions being cooked in the back. Garret, smoking his longpipe, looks up from his book and says, "Ah, Master Laren! how was your night's rest? After what you guys did i think a good rest was much deserved...much deserved it was. So, what would you like for morning feast? Eldan is in the back cooking up some morsels right now and it would be not a smidge of bother to put some on for you. What say you?"

Interesting - Seems on some of these older posts, the ICD reads latest thread first, though when I post it puts the post at the end where it belongs...

I think this was likely like this on e107 and was created when we upgraded from PHPNuke, and maybe we just didn't notice?
