Title: Temple of the Lost
Post by: Blackspear on December 18, 2005, 10:21:49 PM
As the beat up party enters the Zyrithian Temple, they see a large sanctuary that is enshrouded in dust.   Their booted footsteps echo and reverberate endlessly.

Looking straight ahead, the party can't help but notice the remains of an altar, formerly devoted to Azyrith.   Above the altar is a large stained glass window, remarkably intact.

The scene depicted in the stained glass is of Azyrith with his armored boot on the chest of Karthos, the former god of fire, taking his Essence.  The sunlight streaming through the western facing window highlights the silver and maroon bolt of power that is emanating from Karthos and flowing towards Azyrith.   It seems as if the combatants are alive, eternally trapped within the glass, acting out Azyrith's greatest triumph in perpetuity.

Awestruck by the beauty and power of the window, the party can't help but feel the presence of greatness within the temple.   As they stare at the stained glass, they hear the sound of stone sliding on stone.   Soon they notice the altar begin to move to the side.

As the party scrambles for cover, they notice a small human like figure, seemingly rise from the floor where the altar once stood.   As the mysterious figure reaches the top of the staircase, it turns to face the adventurers.   "Long have we awaited your presence, son of Brendan."  The voice is raspy and not much louder than a whisper, but it is distinctly female.   "It has been foretold that you would seek the path through darkness to find the light....

"Come, you and your friends need assistance.   We shall aid you..."

At that moment, the companions notice many more figures surrounding them.  These beings are all of diminutive stature, wearing rags and random pieces of armor, that look to be hundreds of years old.   Many have cloaks with deep cowels, a few wear ancient helmets, others have their faces wrapped in veils, but none of them show their faces.

In a non threatening way, the little people herd the party towards the altar and the woman standing in front of it.

Despite her tiny size, the woman carries herself with the bearing of a great one.   She looks at Quinton and says, "My name is Elsyra.  I am the Great Mother of these people.   What is your name, son of Brendan?"

Quinton smirked at Flea's display. It was just what these people needed he thought. He was still a bit resentful that their prophecy had foretold of a betrayal from a friend in his company. This display offered up the possibility that they could be wrong about that.

"As you can see," Quinton said, "It most certainly can be."

"That cannot be.   It has been foretold that we would mine the last of the mage stone in the world.   We have done that.   We fulfilled our destiny."   She looks to Elizabeth and Quinton as if she had just been told that she had a third eye that she never known about.

Flea steps forward, rummaging through his pack (of treasures) and produces a fistful of the "pink stuff".    "This is the stone that we discovered.    Aside from a slightly lighter color, its the same stuff."    Taking a small pebble, smaller than the one Elsyra threw, he throws it to the floor.   This time however, the explosion is far greater than when Elsyra threw hers a moment before.

After the dust settled and the shock of the explosion wore off, its plain to everyone, that Flea actually put a small hole into the stone floor.

Quinton looked to Elizabeth and turned back and said, "My people have found a cache of this 'Mage Stone' in a cave far to the north of here. The properties of this stuff has has filled my people with doubt in it's harvesting. Understandably they don't want to destroy themselves in mining it. So how do  we mine it without bringing our destruction?"

Quinton was reaching desperation. He wanted to blow the Deltharites back across the ocean or destroy them trying. The Mage Stone was an equalizer for his thinning forces. Without it, his campaign for his people's freedom was in danger of ending before it began.

"It is of no consequence, because we have mined the last of it."  Elsyra looks at Quinton with sorrow in her eyes.  "My people have fulfilled their destiny."

Quinton was not at all surprised by the demonstation as he already knew of their danger.

"How might one harvest this without destroying themselves?"

"Very well.   First, you must know that these stones must be handled with care.   They are quite volatile." To demonstrate this, she picks up a pebble sized bit of stone and throws it at the floor.   It explodes in a brilliant flash and makes a sharp, loud bang.   After the pink smoke clears from the room, she smiles and says, "It would be folly to drop the stones.   They could kill you."

Quinton thinks for a moment and replies, "I will not punish my friends for acts that they haven't commited. Your prophecy says that I will be betrayed but it does not tell the manner of the betrayal. If I hold back my trust in them then would I still be fit to be trusted? We all go...everyone of us."

"You will be betrayed.   It has not been written down, because like you, we do not read.    We pass our history and prophecies from verbally from generation to generation.  All of my people know that you will be betrayed.  Just as you are Brendan's son."   Elsyra looks at Quinton with sympathy in her eyes and waits for his decision.

Quinton's eyes widen and he says with surprise, "Betray me! Is this what your prophecy has foretold? I would trust my life with these people! What is the manner of the betrayal? This prophecy of yours...is it written down? I would like to hear it as it is written...if it be so."

Quinton looks back at each one of his companions unaccusingly but with a manner of slight distress.

"The secret is yours to do with as you will.  They may stay if you wish it.   However, you must know that one of your companions will betray you."   Elsyra again fixes Quinton with a penetrating gaze as if she is trying to search his soul.

Quinton raises his eybrow at Flea and says, "Hmmm....that makes sense." Quinton turns back to Elsyra and says, "Giving the secret only to Brendan's decendant...is that also in your prophecy? My friends have been with me through a great deal of toil and hardship. I trust them with my life. Please, I ask that they be allowed to stay."

"Your heart is noble and good.   Don't ever forget yourself."  Elsyra fixes Quinton with a piercing gaze almost as if she is peering straight to his soul.

After a moment, she smiles and says "Let's get started.   First, I must respectfully ask that your compatriots leave the room.   I am sworn to give the secret only to the blood of Brendan."  She points her finger at Flea and says "He can stay."

Flea's eyes flash wide and he smiles a cocky grin.   He very confidently sits down next to Quinton.

The others simply stare with a look of astonishment upon their faces.

Quinton frowns slightly and says, "Shed a tear for those that will also die because of it. In those deaths however, many may be freed as well. Still, I would prefer that it not come to death. It's never an easy road flirting with the evolution of becoming what you hate most. Sometimes you must become a monster to defeat the monster. If I could save the souls of the Deltharites I would. It's with much regret that I will spill their blood for there is a greater power in life. Unfortunately, Delthara has convinced them otherwise."

Quinton straightens his shoulders and says, "Excuse me, for my preaching. I...I'm just regretful to take life. It's sometimes necessary but I don't take pleasure in it. Thank you for the gift that your people have given us. When we succeed in our liberation I promise to you that your city will once again see it's splenor and your people can walk proudly under the open sky."

"This is a great moment in my people's history.   We have been waiting very long for you to come.   Now that time is here.   Once we have completed our lesson, my people must begin a new path.   I shed a tear of joy for our sucsess in protecting the firestone and a tear of sorrow for all of those who died to defend it."

Elsyra leads the group through the temple.   She heads towards a door to the side of an ornate altar devoted to Azyrith.   She whispers a word and waves her hand and the door opens at her command.   Inside Lur'hion and Quinton can see a small chamber that has many candles and incense burners.   There are seven cushions on the floor in a small circle.

Elsyra asks the group to stay at the door while she heads to an ornately carved box covered in gold and platinum leaf.  It is the most beautiful artifact that many in the group have ever seen.   The lid shows what must be Azyrith commanding Flaern to serve him.

Lur'hion can't help but become interested at seeing this scene depicted on top of the chest.

Elsyra picks up the small chest and brings it to the center of the chamber.  She places it on the floor and then kneels in prayer.   After a few moments in silent devotion,  she looks at Quinton and says, "You and your companions may enter and sit on one of the cushions."

Once everyone is seated she looks at Quinton and says, "Inside this chest is my people's greatest treasure.  We have protected it for thousands of years from both the druids of Flaern and the wizards.   My ancestors were instructed by Azyrith to save it for you."

Elysra speaks a few words in an odd ancient sounding language and the lock of the chest opens.   Slowly, she lifts the cover of the chest.   Straining to see into the ornate box,   everyone sits up straighter and leans forward, craning their necks.

As the cover is removed, the group sees that the interior of the chest is tightly packed with the stone that flea and Vecklyn so eloquently named the "pink stuff".   Later, Feldyn informed them that it was called Wizard's Stone.   Quinton, Flea, Elizabeth, and Larkin, remembering how volatile the stone can be, sit back as if they expected it to erupt in their faces.

"It is with great respect and reverence that I Elsyra, Great Mother of Zyrithia, give you Quinton, Son of Brendan, our sacred firestone.   I shall instruct you in its uses."   Elsyra looks at Quinton and wipes a tear from her eye.   Everyone noticed  that her voice was quavering while she spoke these last words.

"Our prophets spoke of a great calamity, during a kingless age.   The forces of the dark goddess would terrorize the land.   The people would suffer from a great sickness.   The wizards would be killed in great numbers.

"A man of Shada would reawaken the line of kings and wield the firestones in battle.  He would be known to us by his sword.   He would wield the sword of the great king.   The son of Brendan would arrive in the temple at the full Hunter's Moon.  We have waited in the temple every year for thousands of years.   It is one of our most sacred holy days.   Not until this day has anyone entered the temple.

"We are to give you the last of our firestone and teach you the ways of it.   In doing so our curse will be lifted.  We will be free to follow you to the sun.

"We know little of your companions except that they represent the united houses of the Kingdom.    You have brought them together, ending decades of petty strife and civil war.  You are our savior.

"We have waited over two millenia for you..."

Elsyra stares directly into Quinton's eyes as if searching for the truth of her people's prophecy.

After a moment of intense scrutiny, she says, "Come I must give you the firestone."

Quinton turns to Lur'Hion and says, "That symbol is quite a wonder is it not?"

"You truly believe that I'm the man of your prophcy then. What proof have I given to you, other than my sword, that I'm the one? And what of my companions? Were they prophesized to you as well?"

Elsyra leads the party into the large structure on the highest level of the cavern.   The structure is obviuosly designed for defensive purposes.  The keep is easily large enough to protect the entire population of this underground dwelling.

As the party enters the keep, their eyes are drawn upwards towards a large flame with the symbol of Azyrith upon it.   Its breathtaking in its magnitude.   It covers the entire ceiling of the fortress.  As people move, their perspective of the holy symbol never changes.  The symbol rotates with the viewer.

"That is absolutely beautiful!"  Elizabeth stares wide eyed with her jaw dropped.  "I've never seen anything like this."

Larkin simply stares in awe and then kneels upon the floor in prayer.

"This is our temple.   We built it over two thousand years ago with the last of our people's magic.  Azyrith himself graced us with his presence.   His symbol is proof of his approval of us, his disciples."  Turning towards  Quinton, she says, "Come.  I have a gift for you.   We have been waiting for many years to give it to you."

"Aye...it does Larkin. Although now isn't the time perhaps they can tell us more about it. I wonder how the army fares right now. We left them cold and hungry and not with much hope. I believe that they have the resolve though. Soon winter will end...just like the dark plaque that has been brought by the Deltharites."

Quinton takes in the sight of what appears to be a surreal night sky. Having worked the fields for much of his life he never had much opportunity to travel underground. Even in his recent extensive travels the underground was little more than crude caves. This, however, was extraordinay to his eyes. "Great Shada..." he whispers.

"Lur'hion, have you ever seen a sight like this? Has anyone here ever seen something like this? It's incredible..." Quinton's voice trailed off in absolute wonder.

Elsyra leads the party out of the temple and up to the cavern wall, where she starts to ascend the steps.    The small village (for lack of a better word) is the most curious sight that anyone has ever seen.   It is a multitude of bright lights coming from every hearth and the muliple leveles of homes just seems so strange.

Everyone is feeling much better for having the soak.   Azyrith's warmth has done much good.   Old scars and fresh cuts and bruises have been completely healed over.   Most people notice a spring in their steps that they haven't felt for quit a while.

Elsyra leads the party towards the top of the steps where there is a large fort like building...

After sitting in the pool and soaking in the warmth of Azyrith, Elsyra states,"Come.  We will break bread together."   She strides from the poll and grabs a robe that was placed there for her.   You notice that there are robes for the entire party awiting you.   Flea nudges Quinton and whispers, "Hey.   They took our clothes."

Does Quinton take Brendan's Sword in the water with him?

As Quinton wades into the water he discovers that it is quite hot, but pleasantly so.   He has never experienced a bath in hot water before.  The water has an effervescent feel to it.  The holy knight feels immediately relaxed.   There are ledges that run around the pool and are submerged under about 1 1/2 feet of water.   They are perfect to sit upon and enjoy the marvelous warmth of this wonder of nature.

Soon after Quinton enters the pool, Lur'hion, Flea, Elizabeth, and Larkin join him and Elsyra.   Everyone seems to soak up the warmth of the pool in a companionable silence.   The only sound to be heard is the bubbling of the water in the center of the pool.

As the adventurers sit in the heated water, their cares are momentarily lifted.   The grime that covers their bodies is lifted away and their aches are soothed.

After a while, Elsyra brakes the silence.  "You are sitting in the presence of Azyrith.   Although most of you do not revere him, he aids you on your quest.   You all fight with courage, as true warriors should....."
As Elsyra is speaking, she seems to go into a trance as she stares towards the steam in the center of the pool.

"Your quest is in great danger.   You will face much peril in the days to come.   The Shadan Knight will suffer much anguish, but his younger brethren will save his life.    Delthara has sent her minions to oppose you...Flaern's servant will be sorely tested...Beware the two faced rogue..."

Shortly after her last statement, Elsyra snaps back into reality.  She smiles at Quinton and says, " I hope I have foretold  favorable portents?"

Quinton wearing just his breeches grabs his ancestral sword and heads to the pool. He looks around tying to memorize every detail of the surrounding ruins. He comes to the edge of the pool and looks into it to see if he can see the bottom. With the dim light and the steam rising up the bottom of the pool remains elusive but is still inviting.

It has been far too long since he had a bath that wasn't rain or snow. Growing up as a poor farmer a bath was considered a luxury only for the rich or noble-born. So often times Quinton would swim in the small pond near his village even in the winter. He remembered how invigorating the cold water was. The water in the pool before him would no doubt prove to be just as refreshing but in a different way.

"It does feel good to be out of my armor", Quinton thought. "To let my feet feel the air instead of suffocating in my boots. The air is nice on my skin that has not seen beyond the metal plates for some time. Well, let's not waste any time"

Taking a deep breath Quinton began to walk into the water.

Larkin kneels in prayer to Azyrith.   Elizabeth and Flea join Quinton in removing various articles of clothing.  Elizabeth of course maintains her modesty.

As Quinton removes his armor, he feels as if a temporary weight is lifted from his shoulders.   His skin starts to tingle as the air from the cavern slowly circulates around his shoulders.  It feels good not to be wearing the heavy armor.  Even for just a few moments.

When the little people finish their prayer, all but Elsyra leave and head towards their dwellings.   Elsyra turns to the group and says, " Come.  Let's go to the pool.   You will be glad that you did."  She then strides through the columns and heads towards the steaming water.

Elsyra then leads you towards the steaming pool.  She heads to an entreance between two columns.   Before entering, she kneels on the floor of the cavern and offers a prayer in a strange language.   The other little folk do the same and in short order are chanting together in a mysterious tongue that none of the party has ever encountered before.  At the height of their chant, it seems to those who are observant that for a brief moment, the symbols of Azyrith came alive.

"Zyrithia is the ruins.   New Zyrith is our home.   Its all we have, but its safe.   No ghosts here....

Wizard Trolls come now and again, but we fight them...."

As the party gets closer to new Zyrith they see that it is a large collection of caves carved out of a large cavern.   Each cave has its own glowing light emanating from it.   There are at least one hundred dwellings carved out of the cavern walls.    On the floor of the cavern is a steamy pool of water that is surrounded by many columns that appear to have been pilfered from the ruins above.    On the center of each column is the symbol if Zyrith.   A gigantic flame crossed with a many spiked spear on a large shield.

A road leaves from the pool and heads towards the dwellings.   As it reaches the dwellings, the road turns into a series of stairs that lead ever higher.   At the top level, there is a large structure that looks reminiscent of a castle.   Above the door again is the symbol of Zyrith.  Only this symbol appears to be made of  a real shield and spear with a live writhing flame.

Elsyra approaches the group and says, "We will go to the temple and give thanks to Zyrith.   By his strength we will be saved."

"We burn fungus.   Smell bad.  Get used to it after a while.   Makes good heat."

The little man leads the intrepid adventurer's further down the narrow passageways.   Very quickly, both Quinton and Lur'hion get the feeling that they might not find their way back out without some help.   The small passageways are dark and coninually turning and twisting.

Soon the companions hear the steady sound of moving water.   It grows stronger and stronger until they come around a corner and find themselves standing on the banks of an underground river.   The river is wide and appears to be deep.   It has a slight smell of salt to it.

As Lur'hion's gaze takes in the river and follows the water he notices what appears to be hundreds of dancing multicolored lights hovering above the river in the distance.

The little man points his stubby finger and says, "New Zyrith."  He stares along with the party as if gazing upon his home for the first time as well.
"Come.  Almost there."  He strides along the river bank towards the dazzling lights.

As the party descends the steps beneath the altar, they struggle with their footing.   The steps are rough hewn and steep, much like those of Quinton's old root cellar back home.

Placing his hands out to the side for balance, Lor'hion notices that the stone is cold and wet.   As he steps off of the stairs, he hears dripping water and smells a very acrid odor.

Quinton looks ahead, but he can barely see past the little person in front of him.  The bright torch that the diminutive man is carrying effectively blinds him from seeing more than five feet ahead of him.

The small man turns to Quinton and says in a very hoarse voice, "Don't worry.   Not far."  The man points ahead with a short stubby finger and strides down the corridor.

As the little man moves quickly away.   Quinton and Lor'hion realize that they must stoop in order to move forward.   These passages were obviously not created for humans.

Larkin, by far the largest man in the group looks dubiously at Lor'hion and Quinton and says, "I guess size really does matter, huh?"

Greatness here we come!

Well!  If ya don't know what ya don't know?
How do ya know what ya know?
Ya Know?

I'm glad to see this post is off to a great start!

"Lor'hion would know all of that except for the part about Elsyra's people. Know one from the outside world knows about them."

In other words, Lor'hion has never heard of them.

Although he might enjoy smoking potato chips with them.

No, What I'm saying is that Matt Conlon doesn't know if this is something that Lor'hion knows about. I don't wanna answer "Nope, Never heard of them" without actually know if it's something he would have heard of.

what I'm asking for is for Greg to say "Yeah, Lor has heard of them, but only that they smoke potato chips and eat french toast" so that I could then get in character and say "Well, Quintin, I, being Lor'hion have heard of the existence of these folks, but only that they exist. Nothing of consequence".

But as things stand now, I do not know what Lor'hion knows.

Ok sorry guys, I will write a brief recap.

Bare basics for this question:  Zyrithian and Shadan wizards fought a war with each other.  They discovered how to use Flaern's power to enahance their spells.   They abused her power to the point of breaking.  N'arth used to be one island.  The Sundering happened at the height of the war.  Flaern's power broke... Volcanic  eruptions and earthquakes shattered the island into pieces.   Many cities were wiped of the map.   Elsyra's ancestors were marred during this destruction.  It is commonly believed that Flaern took her wrath out on the wizards in an attempt to destroy them.

Lor'hion would know all of that except for the part about Elsyra's people.  Know one from the outside world knows about them.

Quinton would know this too.

Actually, it's what Quinton wants to know. Quinton is curious to why these people suffered the wrath of Flaern and even what the Sundering is/was. You being close to Flaern (IOW: a druid) Quinton figures that you might have some insight to this.

The party is trying to rescue the poisoned Zyrithian Wizards, who are surrounded by the Deltharan Army a few miles away.   There is an underground passage from the temple to the Zyrithian Tower.    Quinton has a small supply of White Trillium and ogre's teeth, which grounded together into a fine powder, can cure the poison that the wizard's are suffering from.

The poison is derived from red trillium and is used by the Deltharites in an effort to control the populcae of N'arth.  Once the poison has been eaten, the Deltharites offer a temporary cure to their victims.  This insures their cooperation or the they will die.

A Deltharite spy managed to poison the food of the Zyrithian Tower.   Most of the wizards have been poisoned and they are dying.   The wizards will be valuable allies to the Army of N'arth, if the can only be rescued.

Quinton had some questions but knew that it would probably be safer in their dwellings. Before continueing with the strange folk Quinton tapped Flea on the shoulder and said, "It's alright. Sometimes it's better not to hide."

Quinton led the party on but quickly fell back to talk with Lor'hion. "What do you suppose they fill their stomachs with?" Quinton asked jokingly. "Anyway, have you heard of these people before? She said they suffered Flaern's wrath. Do you know anything about that?"

"During The Sundering, our ancestors were physically scarred by Flaern's wrath.   They barely survived, but survive they did.   Ashamed by their appearance, they refused to leave the city.   Many of them fled to the caverns underground to escape the horrors that manifested themsleves in the city.

As the years went by they settled into the caverns, formed a new society and had children.   Maimed children.   Children who looked more like serpents than humans or elves.

Our people began to become accustomed to the dark.   Our eyes grew larger and our bodies got smaller, adapting to the naarow spaces underground.   Some of our people can even see without seeing.   You would call them blind but they are not.   In fact they are aware of your little brethren hiding in the corner."  She stops speaking and points to Flea, who has an astonished, then frustrated look on his face.

Flea can hardly believe he was discovered.  He steps out of the shadows with a sheepish look on his face.   He slowly puts his daggers back into his boot and belt respectively and walks to Quinton's side.  "Sorry," he whispers to Quinton.

As if she wasn't interrupted at all, Elsyra continues.  "Some of our mystics have foretold of the day that we would be saved by a descendant of Brendan.   He would be accompanied by the united houses and the voice of Flaern.   Together, they would set us free and return us to our ancestral heritage.

"Clearly, you are Brendan's descendant and he is a servant of Flaern." She points to Lor'hion with a bony, scaled finger, with a long sharpened claw at its tip.

"The others must represent the united houses....Come follow me, we will take you to our home and heal your wounds and fill your stomachs."  She turns and strides back toward the altar and heads down the stairs.

Quinto reaches out to shake hands with Elsyra. "You said that you were in a plight. What plight is that?"

Lor'hion walks close behind Quinton. "Strange that they live surrounded by horrors, and yet they are willing to help those who wander blindly into their midst. Methinks they were expecting us?"

"Very well.  I know that it is not easy for you to trust us under these circumstances.  However, I will assure you again.  We mean no harm."

She steps off of the platform holding the altar and strides slowly towards Quinton with a scaly outstretched hand offered to him to shake.  "I am Elsyra.   These are my kin.   We are known amongst ourselves as the people.  Outlanders have many names for us, but most refer to us as The Lost.   We are the descendants of those who survived The Sundering in this forsaken city."

"Our ancestors were humans and elves.  We are something else entirely."

"It has been foretold that you would come and save us from our plight.   We wish to help you on your quest however we can."

She stops before Quinton and waits for him to grasp her hand in a friendly exchange.

Quenton concentrates for a moment while he half heartedly listens to Larkin.   "I think we should take them at their word.   Besides," he whispers, "their so small we can easily whip them if they start any trouble."

Eilzabeth responds by saying, "We seem to be surounded.  Do we have any choice?"

Quinton searches the spirits of the little people that are all around him.  Without much effort he notices a distinct lack of the foreboding, blood chilling feelings that nearly overcome him whenever he detects evil intent upon those around him.

He also notices that Flea is nowhere to be found.   But then again, that does not surprise him.

Quinton looks about to see if there is anyone beyond in the shadows waiting to ambush. "The entry into the city was perilous enough..." Quinton thought, "why should now be any different". Quinton in his earlier years was always quick to trust other people because he believed that people were at heart good. Recent events have proven to him that is not always the case. He was also cautious becasue he was in a ruined city that was once hailed for it's citizens talents for magic. At a the release of one's guard foul magic could be released and destroy his party and himself.

Quinton held up his ancestral sword and said, "Greetings mysterious one. The city is in terrible ruin. Since our entry everything we have seen has tried to attack us. Before I give you any names I would ask for some evidence that you will not befriend us only to betray us later."
