Title: Dark servant, Good deed
Post by: Wildfire on December 07, 2005, 04:29:54 PM
Maal and Dale started to walk their way to Ashe's wounded and hurt. Severen Looks to Maccabeus and asks, "Does your wolf friend have a name?"

"Onward soldiers..." Severen says.

Severen went back into his dark temple and walked through the fading purple mist. He goes to his underground storage pantry and pours himself another glass of wine.

He goes back up and walks back through his temple watching the swirling darkness above him.  Arriving to the front door he sits down upon the steps and across the river he can see the dying embers of the fires from the earlier events. He looks out across the rest of the town enjoying the haunting beauty of the night.

"Aye, Severen! I dinna mean t'night.  I wanted ta mention it ta ye is all.  Ye are righ' tha' I need ta go get some rest now.  I'll return in a day or so ta talk with ye some more aboot it."

With that, Maal Brengain turns abruptly and heads towards the door.

Maccabeus was a little surprised at Maal's question; thus far the young wildlander had spoken only of Kossuth. What marvelous growth among all things here in Threshold. He mused to himself.

He smiled and said, "This one would be a good soldier for Takhisis, Severen. From what I've seen, her will is iron-forged, her arm is strong, and her justice is swift. She even speaks her mind! Of course, you're aware that I speak as an outsider looking in, and have no in-depth knowledge of the ways of your order, but I will submit that she's not above growth by trial."

He surveyed the two and bowed low. "I'll leave you two to the most private of conversations." And with that, he ambled south on the road, towards Ashe's residence, and was swallowed by the night in short order.

Severen looks at Maal and says, "I can tell you more about the motivations of Takhisis...but not tonight. Tonight you are tired and wounded and need your sleep. You most likely have much work ahead of you and you'll need your strength. Come see me when your mind is quiet."

Ha!  You're too quick!  I was just e-mailing WF about this, explaining my characters motivations, and mentioned Dale and his anticipated reaction to this in my message.  Heh!

"Aye, I mus' be goin' as well.  Yet, I would ask one more question o' ye..." Maal Brengain interjects.

"I, um, am curious - an' e'en innerested - aboot yer faith, Severen.  How can I learn more?  I may e'en want ta become one o' yer followers..."

"Absolutely. Oh, and may you defeat the blasphemers. Now, unless you have some more questions I must excuse myself. I must refill my wine glass and I have some blasphemous souls to send to damnation." Severen chuckled at how oddly casual he must sound to his two guests about his work.

"This is certainly something that we can arrange." Maccabeus replied. "Perhaps a day or two further along? When the current villainy has been quelled?"

Severen smirks and says, "If it's all the same to you Maccabeus I would very much like to see the Temple to Mahiya that you stay at. I assure you that my interests and respects will honor your mother goddess as you have honored mine during your visit."

Maccabeus smiled up at the priest. "Whole forearms, typically." He answered. "However, it seems to me that I am no longer in the Dale. As we say: If they eat fish, you eat fish." He grabbed Severn's hand and clasped it in the style that he had seen done around Threshold.

Severen held his hand out to accept Maccabeus's. Severen asks, "Do you shake hands...how do your people shake hands? Hand to hand...wrist to wrist...or by the whole of the forearm?"

"I certainly don't want that. You've too much important work to do. For what you shared, thank you. Perhaps I'll turn back about and see if Ashe is in need of help." He suggested. "Then it's back to my home. Thanks again." Maccabeus held his hand up to the now-standing priest.

Severen sirks and says, "Normally I never would. Death is my province and the secrets that come with it are considered sacred by my order. However, the undead that you might be dealing with were created by blasphemers and therefore need to be eradicated." Severen says as he stands up.

He sips some wine and says, "Based on the what you've told me you'll most likely be facing zombies or skeletons. Crushing weapons will work best on the skeletons and blades will work best on the zombies. Blessed water from Paladine or Istisha will also work very well against them. That is as much that I can tell you. If I did tell you more I could fall from favor."

"Spiritually, at least. Physically, perhaps not." Maccabeus agreed.

"I wonder, Severen." Maccabeus perked up. "Are you able to share your knowledge with us regarding the different forms of undead, and what might be the best ways to fight them? Given the current climate, that might be useful information indeed."

"I've heard stories of these abominations that you call undead." Maccabeus said hotly. "Seems to me to be an affront to the Great Cycle, although to be fair, I haven't studied them, so I am largely ignorant regarding their place, should they have one. It just seems to me that they cannot return if they never leave."

Maccabeus sat heavily upon the stair to the temple and cradled his head in his palms. "Dark days are brewing, it seems."

"Maal, that's exactly what I'm saying. As to the purpose....you'll have to ask the priest that raised them. To stop them well, it all depends on the manner in which they were raised. Some undead resist certain kinds of attacks better than others." Severen says. He takes a sip of his wine and askes, "Are you sure you don't want some wine? It's quite extraordinary."

"Hold a moment," Maal Brengain interrupts. "Ye 're sayin' tha' those dead folk in th' cave will rise from th' dead an' walk ag'in!? For wha' purpose? Will they attack th' town? An' how can they be stopped if'n they already be dead?" The Wildlander's brow is furrowed as she struggles to understand this latest bit of information.

Severen looked out into the town and said, "I'm not at all alone my friend. There were spirits...guardians of this temple, here when I arrived. Do not worry...they'll not harm you if you do not harm us. They have strict orders."

"Very well. I'll stay out here with the three of you so that you're not so ill easy." Severen says. he walks over to the steps and sits down with his back against on of the outside entry columns.

"Now, you were wondering why they would have taken human teeth. I assume there were humans in the cave with the carcass eaters, yes?" without waiting for an answer he continues, "It is my belief that the teeth were stolen as a means for...how shall I put this...animating the dead from a distance. You can have faith that you'll see those dead people again. My guess is that if you were to go to the cave right now they wouldn't be there."

Severen looked out into the night sky as if trying to see something. "Are there more of them out there? I'd stake your life on it."

"I too will have to decline wine." Maccabeus said. "Wine dulls me too quickly, and tonight I'd rather not be dull. What I'd really like is to go out with Wolf and see if we can't pick up the scents of any of these villians. I'd like to understand where they come from, how long have they been here, are there more of them, if so where?"

Maccabeus caught himself once again. "At any rate," he added. "I'll have to take you up on that wine another time, perhaps tomorrow, when tensions are lessened."

Maal Brengain follows Maccabeus into the temple and stands silently at his side. She nods once in affirmation as he describes the winged serpent. "Th' beast took th' teeth outta th' dead folk in th' caves too. Human teeth... Can ye perhaps think o' any reason fer tha'?"

Then in answer to Severen's invitation, "I shall 'ave ta decline yer offer o' wine, Severen. I intend ta keep me wits aboot me tonight since there 'as been an attack on th' town. I should like ta stay an' speak with ye, though, if'n ye dinna mind."

Severen walks smoothly from the alter towards the front door separating the colorful mist with every step. He sheeths his dagger and says, "A winged serpent did this, eh? I can assure you that if the teeth were taken by the serpent that more of those carcass eaters will return. As for the claws...I don't know why they would be taken. For what I know of the beast, the claws do not act as any sort of seed. It isn't uncommon though to use organic powders as ingredients for various alchemic recipes. But I'm really just guessing at this point. Don't see that as a fact or clue..it's just something to keep in mind. The night has been busy and I was just about to set in with a glass of wine. Would you care to join me? The wine is from next door...a fine fermentation it is I must admit."

Maccabeus took a deep, settling breath and walked purposefully into the temple. "Sorry for disturbing you, Severen." He said as he entered.

Maccabeus surreptitiously surveyed the interior of the temple, and didn't move too deeply into it. Despite his curiosity, and the welcoming words of Severen, he felt anything but welcome in that dark temple. "But Maal and I just had a conversation that I thought you might firstly be able to shed some light upon, and secondly to have an interest in. We were discussing the evening's events and Maal said that she fought some of these carrion eaters in a cave south of here, and something or someone had come later to take teeth and claws from the dead carrion eaters' bodies. She said that it was a..." he looked at his wildlander companion for confirmation as he spoke "...winged serpent that took the teeth and claws. Any thoughts on what that could mean? Why would the claws also be of interest?"

"I shall present the request to my liege. You may wait here." the whispering voice replied. The voice had an echo-like quality to it and there was no face or form to accompany it.

Wolf's hair was standing straight up not from fear, Maccabeus noted, but from warning. Instinctively he bared his teeth and growled low and deep.

The outside was quiet now as many of the visitors and residents had gone to rest. The smell of the house fires from earlier in the night was lingering in the air. Around the temple the purple mist had grown thicker and seemed to move with a life of it's own. It surrounded the feet and legs of the three companions giving each one a grave chill.

Suddenly the doors open. Inside the Temple of Shadows is lit with a luminece purple fog. Beyond on the inside is an alter with a pile of bodies. Stnading at the alter waiting for your entrance is a dark robed silhouette with a long, shiny, ceremonial dagger. "Please, enter. You are all welcome into my home." Severen said with his calm, silky voice.

Maccabeus jumped near out of his skin at the sound of the voice. "Oh," he replied, catching his breath and quieting his heart. "Ah, I'm Maccabeus, and this is Maal - we're looking to speak with Severen. Uh, Please." He added meekly, then listened intently for any response.

"You can stay out here if you like, old friend." He said to Wolf. "Although I agree, this place is unnerving."

Maal pulls hard on the door but with no success of it opening. After some moments a haunting, whispering voice answers, "Whom shall I say is requesting audience?"

Wolf becomes more restless. Maal and Maccabeus do not recognize the voice as Severen's...it is clearly anothers.

Looking at the Temple of Shadows Maal and Maccabeus can see the on the grounds close to the temple is a dark purple fog. The lights from within also glow purple casting and eerie glow to the outside. The light from within flashes out in quick bursts like lightning.

Both Maccabeus and Maal could swear that they see shadows on the edge of their sight moving closer to them the closer they get to the temple. Wolf's fur stands on end and he gets quite nervous with every step towards the entrance.

The obsidian temple is curtained by four towers at exactly North, South, East, and West. The four towers climb into great single spires ending in points. The center rotunda of the temple seems to swirl in odd colors of purple and green and is almost hypnotizing to watch.

The entrance door is inlaid with gold on black obsidian with various symbols including the everwatching 'eye'.

On the side of the temple is the cart that the bodies had been loaded onto.

Maal approaches the front of the temple...

"Ach, sorry, Maal." Maccabeus apologized. "I'm from the Dale of Wolves, which borders the wildlands. Most of my people talk much like you do, but in my line of work it's frowned upon. Still, I lapse back inna it a' times." He smiled as he spoke. "It's fairly easy to start talking like that, especially if I'm in the company of someone who's got the accent or dialect. I didn't mean to be making fun of you. And, thanks for slowing up a bit."

"There's the Temple." Maccabeus said as they walked. "Will you have a problem going inside if Severen isn't outside?"

"I dinna mind if'n ye come along... Let's get going," Maal Brengain turns abruptly and begins striding towards the center of town.

After a few long steps she realizes that she will quickly outdistance her shorter, gnomish companion if she walks at her usual pace, so she purposely slows down and shortens her stride.

As they walk along, the Wildlander looks down at Maccabeus, "Ye almost sounded like a Wildlander back there, Maccabeus... 'Ave ye travelled in th' Wildlands yerself then?"

"Teeth an' claws, eh?" As he spoke to Maal, Maccabeus began to lapse a bit into the wildlander dialect. His grandfather and Shankaria would have been very unpleased to hear him talking in that brogue, but it was infectious, and it was common in the Dale if one weren't a Chosen of the Divinities. He had studied long and hard to be rid of it, but it still crept in if left to it's own accord.

"Severen'll like as not know aboot why they might've taken claws. D'ya mind if'n I folla ye? Ashe c'n doo without me, no doubt."

"Eh?  Dale?  He'll be fine... When 'e wakes up!" snorts Maal Brengain with a sneer. "When Ashe wants one ta rest an' 'eal, 'e serves ye a mug o' some kinda brew tha' puts ye inta a deep slumber. Knocks ye out as if a giant 'ad clobbered ye on th' 'ead! I was 'avin' none o' tha' this time! Kit is also in there sleepin' off 'er wounds from th' fight." The wildlander shakes her head, "She's a brave girl runnin' inta tha' battle. When I first met 'er I dinna think she 'ad tha' in 'er, but she's proved more than once tha' she can stand 'er ground with th' rest o' us when things get ugly."

"So, th' teeth grow inta new beasties, ye say?" Well, tha' is disturbin' news, indeed! We fought some o' those beasties in th' minin' caves south o' th' town, but we left 'em there, not knowin' any better. Some... thing... a winged serpent tha' Julius thinks is a Xanthakos spy, came in th' night an' took all o' th' teeth an' claws from th' carrion eaters an' dead folk in th' caves. I dinna unnerstand why it did tha'. Tha's why I wanna talk ta Severen now. I'm thinkin' tha' 'e may know a bit aboot it. Perhaps they are usin' th' teeth to hatch new beasties! This is very disturbin'!"

"Actually, no, I didn't see him destroying them. He and I put them all into a sack and delivered them to Julius." Maccabeus told the wildlander. "It's really a remarkable, yet foul transformation. Those teeth actually turn into new carrion eaters; they grow off of the body in which they've been placed. I actually pulled one from a body and the tooth had sprouted a new mouth, complete with its own teeth and everything! It's unnatural. Severen and I destroyed those few teeth that were growing into new beasts." Maccabeus made a distasteful mouth as he spoke of the night's events.

"Er, how's Dale?" He asked, just noting that Maal's earlier companion was now missing. "And what did you mean when you noted that half the Protectorate was sleeping? Do you need additional help tonight? Wolf and I can stay on the night if it'd help."

After kneeling on one knee and receiving Maccabeus' ministrations, Maal Brengain rises to her full height again and leans casually upon her spear.

"Well, I had been on me way back ta find ye an' Severen. I'm... curious... about what he needed ta do. Removin' th' teeth ye say, an' destroyin' 'em, eh? Did ye see 'im destroy 'em? Wha' was it all aboot, do ye know?"

Maccabeus smiled up at his companion and said, "I can do but a little tonight, but..." He trailed off and dug about in his small sack, presenting a small ring of thistle in short order.

"Here, kneel if you can so that I can reach that wound behind your arm." Maccabeus pressed the thistle ring to the wound and murmured in a foreign language. *cough* Cure Minor Wounds *cough*

"That's the best that I can do for you tonight, I'm afraid." He apologized. "I'm not called upon often for such needs, although I get the sense that in the future we might need it more and more. I'll have to beseech Istisha for this strength." Maccabeus stored his thistle back in its sack.

"Where are you off to now?" He asked. "I was just on my way to visit Ashe to see if he had a need of any help."

"We worked closely together." Maccabeus answered. "He was removing the teeth from the unnatural carrion eaters and destroying them. Apparently, that's how new carrion eaters become created. He's an interesting fellow."

Maccabeus noted Maal's stiffness. "I'm surprised the Ashe wasn't able to help you more." He siad. "I do have a small mastery of Mahiya's strength. Would you like a mote of restoration? If you like, I'd be able to do more in the morning, but I'd need to beg Mahiya for the wisdom to do it. Still, as I said, I can do a little now and more in the morning, if you'd like."

In that length on path approaching Ashe's house that was darkened and unpopulated Maccabeus saw up ahead a tall lean form silouhetted against the few lights behind it. He was taken immediately back to that morning when he arrived in Threshold to see a tall wildlass at the Anglehawk span.

"Hail Maal." He called out. "Did you get what you needed from Ashe? Are you well?" He asked.

Macabeus stepped out into the night and walked back across the Rosewalk bridge. Wolf was still there, guarding his charge dutifully as Severen began the task of carting bodies this way and that. "Come on, Wolf." Maccabeus greeted his friend. "Let's go see if Ashe is in need of help. Perhaps we can learn something." Wolf stood up, and as Maccabeus passed him the big animal shouldered the gnome playfully. The pair walked over the wolfsong and on towards Ashe's residence.

"We have some people on it right now. Jarmok has proven himself to be an accomplishe tracker in the past and I have my faith in his abilities. I do appreciate your generous offer to help but right now it's a matter of waiting. If we wait too long then your tracking ability will be put to test. Oh, and Severen, if you would please bring the townsfolk bodies to the Altar of Virtue. I don't ask that you go inside just leave them on the cart. These six people had no relatives in town. So I'll leave to the Priest of Paladine to see that they are given proper attention. If there is nothing else of concern then I offer you a good night Severen."

"A good night to you as well Julius." Severen offers his hand to Maccabeus and says, "Maccabeus, it's been an interesting night talking to you. At any time you and the wolf are welcome to my temple. May you both embrace the night at it embraces you."

Severen says, "It was. We got there just in time to destroy the festering rats. It is all taken care of as far as any infestation from those bodies. Now, to another matter of my interest. The bodies of the assassins, the beasts and the teeth. I can dispose of these things if you'll let me."

Julius rubs his chin for a bit. "The bodies you can have. I trust you'll send them to the proper place. The teeth I'll have taken care of. They must burn in a fire to destroy them?"

"Yes, that's right. Preferrably in a brazier above the fire so they're away from any animal ashes. But a forge fire will work well too."

"Thank you for you services this night, both of you." Julius says,

Severen replies in a silky tone, "On this particular occasion against these particular foes, it truly was my pleasure"

"I'll accompany you once more to see Julius." Maccabeus offered. "I do appreciate your instruction; you are an interesting person to learn from. I only wish that I had been closer at hand when the troubles broke out."

Leaving Wolf to guard the bodies again, the duo went once more over the Wolfsong towards the council house. In the fashion that Severen had exhibited earlier, Maccabeus knocked briefly upon the door and then entered the council house.

"We were going to bring back any teeth found in the bodies. We've found them and destroyed the newborn beasts and now we can find out from Julius what he wants to do in the aftermath of this evening. I'm mostly concerned with the teeth and bodies of the attackers." Severen says. "I appreciate your help...and our discussions."

The pair worked for a while in contemplative silence, exchanging little more than notes on this body or that. Thankfully, no more teeth were found in any of the remaining victims of the dreadful carrion eaters.

"Now what, did we say that we would return to Julius?" Maccabeus asked, their harvesting completed.

The streets had thinned out of people but a group of people were passing over the Wolfsong and were heading towards the eastern side of town.

Severen said, "AH..AH-HA! You peice of filth! This one already started to change!"

Severen grabbed his mace and proceeded to pound the little crearure to a pulp. "That was the only one in this body" he said. "On to the next one..."

"It may seem that there is no glory in this dirty task of ours maccabeus. Rest assured the glory is in smiting these little bastards!"

"Severen, you are right: these things are filthy, disgusting, unnatural, vile, affronts to humanity, nature, Mahiya, and all of her children." He looked around to see if there were any commoners who might be interested in seeing the tooth. It would be helpful if someone were to be able to bear testament to what the two priests were doing. It might just diffuse a later friction. He thought hopefully.

Severen said, "You come from an interesting folk. I grew up in the city myself so the wild is somewhat alien to me.

As Maccabeus held the tooth up he could see that the point had already turned into a little mouth with teeth! Maccabeus could surmise that was the reason it was so deep.

"Ahh, I misunderstood, and I think that you are right in an urban setting. In the Dale, we tend to honor our dead by returning them into the Great Cycle, body and all. Our shells nourish the next generation in one way or another. Some prefer to bury their loved ones to nourish insects and plants, some might invite our forest brothers to absorb those shells. What you take out, you should put back. And no, I've never had the privilege of actually seeing a soul, although there was a great shaman among my people who had more than once transferred his own soul into other animals as he grew older. It is said that he finally alit within the body of a great wolf and thus began the Dale Gnomes' lasting affinity for that revered beast."

Maccabeus carefully and gently tended to the body that Severen had laid down for him as he spoke. "Hey - here's one more tooth." He said excitedly. "It's rather deep, though. Just cut it out with my knife?" He didn't wait for Severen to answer; the task seemed fairly obvious, but as he worked a thought occurred to him: "It's a good thing you cued us to check this, Severen. This poor fellow would have become another of those unnatural and foul beasts." He announced somewhat loudly as he held the recovered tooth up.

"Yeah, I don't find any teeth in this one either. Only four more to go. The condition I was actually referring to was the half eaten one. To a cherished, a quiet death is one thing. It looks like they're sleeping. But to see that same person half eaten, ripped, and mangled is far more disturbing to people. It's a violation of sorts. But the falsity in that is the perception that soul and body are one. If they were one then spirits called back from their place of rest would also be torn and broken. In fact they're quite beautiful. Have you ever seen someone's soul?"

Severen grabbed another body and brought it gently to the ground for Maccabeus to speculate. He then pulled another to the ground for him to look over. The bodies of the towns folk, six in total...three men and three women, were bitten and torn. The blood was sticky and partially dried. The faces actually did have the look of sweet peace upon them.

Maccabeus considered Severen's words as he tenderly explored the wounds of one of the victims. "It's an interesting perspective that the death of a loved one creates an image that the person is too weak to deal with." He said philosophically.

"Were that the case, then wouldn't those people go and kill themselves? Indeed, I am aware that this sometimes happens, but wouldn't it happen every time?"

"I live in comfort, aware that death in this life is the venue to another life." As he spoke these words, he was conscious of other villagers witnessing their work. He lifted his voice a bit for others to hear; at least they might draw some small comfort from his words, and be aware that they two men weren't violating their friends or family.

"I find none of the vile beats' teeth inside of this poor soul, Severen." He said loudly. "He can rest easy." The little gnome cumbersously laid the youngish man neatly, and ceremoniously folded his limp hands upon the still chest. He then murmered a silent death prayer to the Great Cycle and moved on to the next victim.

Severen nodded his head and said, "Death does funny things to people. To see a loved one in this condition is probably more of a horror to them. It creates an image that they're too weak to deal with."

Severen pulled over one of the bloodied bodies with great care and says, "Look in the areas where they've bitten. Usually the teeth will either snap out by force or fall out by their own will. Either way, you'll see them either just below the surface or they'll have burrowed their way deeper. Most of these bodies although partly eaten aren't damaged to badly so the chances of an infestation occuring is not as probable. I hate these creatures to the Nine Hells!"

"Fascinating. By the way, I do apologize if I misunderstood your intent regarding disposition of the mortal shells of these people, and if I misrepresented that to Julius. I have a way of misunderstanding, I'm afraid." Maccabeus greeted Wolf happily.

"Is there an easy way of ensuring that no teeth are left to fester in these bodies?" He asked as they looked towards attending the dead. "It a wonder that kin haven't come to help or to be helped." He remarked.

Severen smirked, "Actually, this is the first time I've ever been here. To my understanding there was a mysterious plague that swept through this region last year. It killed only priests and arcanists oddly enough. Since I come from Rhohannus I was never even affected...nine hells, I never even knew about it until I got the charge to come here!"

The two stepped off of the Rosewalk and Severen continued, "Apparently Juius and the rest of the council sent out word to send priests here. The other council members actually embarked on a recruiting effort to some of the larger cities like Kurr, New Jarla, Aldebaron, and Kazbourne. My order got word that a priest of my kind was requested and I was then chosen...actually, I volunteered."

As the two got closer to the cart of bodies Wolf stood up to greet his kindred friend.

"Of course I'll come to keep a sharp eye upon you." Maccabeus jested as he followed the lean priest from the councillor's office. "It's a good thing that it's not far between here and where we need to be." He picked up his stride to keep pace with Servern as they went out into the cool night.

Severen looked from Maccabeus to Julius and said, "He brings a good point. One that I should have. The teeth from these creatures break off and lodge into what is left of a carcass and will then fester. I must look over the bodies of your neighbors to find any such beastly seeds. The bodies will then be able to have any sort of rites performed on them. Well, what rites would have been performed. I doubt very much that the locals would want me to perform death rituals on their friends and family. If you'll excuse me, I must go search over the other bodies for broken teeth. Hopefully it's not too late...Maccabeus would you care to join me?"

Julius says, "I'll keep the teeth here for now until you come back."

"This is a night for misunderstanding." Maccabeus apologized. "I would think that the assassins can be burned and no one would care. I had thought that the villagers who were killed by the foul carrion-eaters had also to be burned. Forgive my ignorance, but that was how I thought it to be. If that's not the case, then we burn the assassins and the carrion-eaters (and their teeth), but are there specific rites to be brought to bear upon the lost villagers?" Maccabeus looked back and forth between the two taller men as he spoke, looking for indications of comprehension and agreement or disagreement.

Julius said, "People? Burn what people? And what about the teeth? Do those get burned as well?"

Severen spoke up, "Excuse me Julius, I didn't make myself clear enough. The teeth are to be burned and the people that Maccabeus was referring to I believe are the assassins that were killed in the skirmish upon the cliff. Is that right Maccabeus? That's what you meant?"

Maccabeus blinked hard several times, and then said "Huh? Whu? Where am I?" He laughed mischievously. "Actually, that's true." He said, still chuckling. "Severen and I pulled the teeth from those foul abhoritions, and they are here in this bag. As for what might have happened had we not done that, I don't know."

"From what I understand now, the beasts and people are to be burned - in separate fires, of course - for purification; is there any issue with doing this?"

Severen cocked his head slightly and says to himself, "That's a neat trick."

The two of them quickly made their way to the Council House and Severen knocked on the door then entered without response. sitting at the reception desk was Julius writing in book. He looked up and said, "yes Severen, oh, and Maccabeus. Why the late visit? Not that I don't expect visitors given the recent activities I just didn't expect either of you...together no less."

Severen drops the blood spotted bag of teeth on the desk and says, "These are from the those beasts that were chewing on your townsfolk. The teeth needed to be removed from the bodies otherwise they'd manifest and turn into more of them. I wanted to let you know that this was done and that all of the teeth are accounted for. Maccabeus here can verify the count since he helped me remove the teeth. Isn't that true Maccabeus?"

"A moment, please." Maccabeus begged the priest.

He turned to wolf and spoke softly to his great friend. "Please do not let any of these townsfolk near these dead things, friend." He requested.

Wolf licked Maccabeus's face and replied, saying: "None will touch them, but don't be too long."

"We're not going far." Maccabeus answered. "Only to that building over there to find the one they call Julius, and we expect to be back soon. Thank you."

Wolf nipped playfully at Maccabeus's long nose.

Maccabeus swatted Wolf's ears. "Nit wit." He accused his friend, then he turned back to Severen. "Ok, lead on. Wolf will guard the bodies until we return."

"We should find Julius first. I want him to be aware of our actions before any rumors start to fester. As it is, the passerbys have been whispering about what we've been doing here. I'm sure that we can leave the bodies here and no one will touch them. I would also like to separate the townsfolk bodies from the others...out of respect. Let's see if Julius is at the Council House."

Severen grabbed the sack of teeth and began to walk towards the Rosewalk.

"Philosophies are interesting no matter where you find them. If I imagine allies standing together as links in a vest of mail, then you need all of your allies, and together you are strong while alone you fall to the ground. On the other hand, a person having lived a sheltered life has no tools to survive on his own. In the Dale, it's a very difficult thing to survive without your clan; it is a virtual necessity to have allies. Does that make us weak? Likewise, we have enmity at many a turn, but does that make us strong. I guess the difference becomes what's in the metal, so to speak."

"I will unequivocally agree with one point, however: it is seductive indeed to live in peace. I don't think that there can long be growth in peace, however. The unfortunate truth is that out of adversity comes growth, and often significant growth is born of significant adversity. That said, we all need to have the opportunity to make those decisions for ourselves. You and I, I think, would prefer to grow, and so would many others. They just don't think about what has to be done to get the growth that they desire. Shall we find Julius first, or burn bodies?"

As Severen placed the last of the teeth into the sack he said, "You have an interesting viewpoint. Personally, I think that if one can survive hard times it makes them stronger in the way that they need to be. That's where I come in. The philosophy that true followers of Takhisis believe in is making others stronger through hardship. A priest mentor once told me that 'allies weaken you, enemies strengthen you'. It's good to have allies but enemies bring to you a sense of survival that makes you strong. How seductive it is to live in peace...which usually leads to aggression thereby igniting war. You might wash in the river. It is good to wash in...good, clean, and cold water."
Title: Dark servant, Good deed

Maccabeus held the sack open dutifully and watched as Severen placed all of the teeth into it.

"Many things can make people stronger." He remarked. "Proper food is a good one. Certainly adversity will make everyone who survives stronger, but I don't understand enough of what's really going on to decide whether this kind of strengthening is good, or for whom, you know?"

"Dang, these things have a lot of teeth! Strength is a surprisingly varied quality, yes? Strength of spirit or body, strength of intellect or character. I think it is often that what strengthens one aspect weakens another, and the eternal question there is what needs strengthening at any given moment. When a deer is taken from the pack, it strengthens the bear, and perhaps the heard as well, but that deer in particular becomes weaker to the point of having no strength at all."

"Still, so long as we all return to the Great Cycle, then everything coalesces in the end. Where can we wash this muck off of our selves? I'd rather it didn't dry on me."

"It's a special moment when you've been chosen for divine work. You must feel honored to take that charge. Anyway, I want to bring the teeth to Julius so that he understands what we've done here. He can either take the teeth and do with them as he will or I can take them back to the temple and destroy them. I've brought a sack to put them in."

Severen tosses the sack to Maccabeus and says, "If you could hold that open I would appreciate it. I'm going to gather the teeth and put them in the sack. I would think Julius is at the Council House dealing with the night's events. Speaking of which, tough times like these make a people stronger don't you think?"

"These days I spend much of my time north of here, near Little Threshold, which you must have passed through on your way here." Maccabeus answered as he tossed additional teeth to clatter into the pile that was growing steadily.

"I've been granted leave to live within Mahiya's temple in that place." He surveyed their grizzly work. "Looks like we're about done here. What's next? Hauling carcasses and teeth into your Patron's temple?"

"That's okay. It just can't have much to feed on. These teeth will feed on ashes if they have to. That's why they have to be separated form the rest of the body in short order. The teeth will manifest as soon as the bodies start to go cold. We started doing this just in time. Afew more hours and this town would have been overrun."

Severen kept pounding. "Someday your friend may push the wrong person and get himself into real trouble. he's lucky I forgave his ignorance."

"He did?" Maccabeus asked bewilderedly. "That's a rather odd reaction. Truth be told, I don't know him very well, but what I have noted is that he tends to lead with his heart, and there's not really a lot of territory between the desert and the tundra, if you take my meaning."

Maccabeus continued harvesting teeth as he spoke. Wolf sat patiently watching the work while passerby, seemingly intimidated by the great animal, gave the trio and their grizzly work a wide berth.

"Is it ok to have a bit of the jaw with the teeth when we burn them, or will that compromise the cleansing?" He asked as he inspected a piece of jaw with three or four teeth yet anchored to it.

Severen continued to bash teeth out of the beast.

Maccabeus could see clearly that Severen was a practical man. "We should maybe see Julius to find out of there were any prisoners taken." He suggested as he collected teeth and threw them into the pile that Severen had started. He then picked his rock up and split another muzzle with it.

"It's a bit of a wonder that these teeth don't break when we smash them." He mused. "Probably a good thing, all things considered."

Severen continued to break teeth out of the creatures maw. "Those assassins that you see in that cart over there are from Xanthakos...The Shadow Empire. They're scouts most likely. Just trying to feel the place out. As for prisoners I don't know. If one is captured though I've got a good way to get him to talk. Just stick one of these teeth into his flesh and he'll start to get eaten from the inside out. If you start with the arm it's easier to control. If you care to you can actually kill the little bugger while it's in the limbs. Trust me, once that thing starts to eat you'll get your information. Usually with a promise to make it stop eating. Personally, I'd get the information and then let it kill the prisoner and then kill the beast. That way, all tracks are covered."

Maccabeus's disgust for the beasts clearly showed in his face as he listened to Severen. More agents of Zyxu, no doubt. He thought acidly. He would have to ask Ashe about that.

Quote from: wildfireThey'll make a good offering to Takhisis as would the assassins. I'll have to check with Julius on that."

Maccabeus was brought up short on that. "Assassins?" He asked blankly. "What would assassins be doing here?" He wondered aloud. "Did these assassins start the fire? Why? Did anyone manage to catch any of these assassins? Perhaps we could ask him some questions?"

He deflated as he listened to his own idiocy. "I'm sorry, Severen." He apologized yet again. "My mind sometimes moves so swiftly I neglect to disengage my mouth." Remembering the job that they were there to do, Maccabeus hoisted he large rock above his head and brought it down upon the abomination's cranium. He was met with a satisfying crunch of bone as the beast's mouth and jaw were sundered.

"They most certainly are not natural. They are the product of Divine and Arcane magic gone foul or used fouly. As you can see their lust for flesh perpetuates their existence. They're like a disease in the form of a beast. Occasionally they do carry disease. So try not to get bit by one. Which reminds me, these bodies should also be burned. I'll do that in my temple. They'll make a good offering to Takhisis as would the assassins. I'll have to check with Julius on that."

Maccabeus could see Severen look at his blood soaked hands and then look up to the sky with a thirsty smile.

"Not at all. The teeth could be likened to eggs. As the beasts eat the teeth break off into the body and are then 'planted'." He rolls the spiney body he's working on over onto it's back and spreads the hindlegs. "See, these creatures are asexual. All of their offspring are generated from within."

Looking at the torn creature Maccabeus could see that the beast had no reproductive organs in the normal sense. This was an oddity for Maccabeus since every creature he had ever seen had a male and female counterpart...these beasts didn't.

"As though I'm counting." Maccabeus said wryly. He brought his rock up high over his head and bashed at the skull of one of the corpse-eaters. The strike was largely ineffectual and he had to repeat the process.

"Here's another one for you, then: when a body is burned, it is typically the bones that remain (teeth included, of course). Do you have to burn them with a special fire? Perhaps in a forge or oast?"
Title: Dark servant, Good deed
Post by: Wildfire on December 08, 2005, 09:42:27 AM
"That's a good question...I'm glad you asked. Even when the carcass is burned there are still ashes that the teeth can manifest in and draw energy from for to grow. So, the teeth have to be away from any body that is alive or dead when they are burned. Burning them guarantees their destruction. If you were to keep the teeth you could actually plant them around in living or dead bodies and they would grow like a maggot into a fly." Severen kept bashing out teeth and tossing them into a pile.

"The reason I need you to watch what I'm doing is because when I hand the teeth to Julius I don't want him to think that I've kept any. Basically, I'm covering my own hindparts."

"Interesting." Maccabeus observed. "Forgive my ignorance, but why not simply burn the entire carcass?" As he spoke, cast about for something heavy enough to begin knocking the sharp teeth from the beasts. His eyes alit on a fair sized rock and he moved to retrieve it.

"Perhaps we could discuss it at a later time. Right now what needs to be done is the teeth need to be removed from the Corpse Eaters over here..." he points towards the cart full of dead villagers, ambushers, and creatures "...and they need to be burned. If they're left to rot in the bodies they'll fester into more of them...and carry the loyalties from wence they came. These are dangerous beasts."

He pulls one of the creatures bodies off of the cart. It hits the ground in a bloody heap. He pulls all of the others down as well...six in all. The stink of the bodies was almost overwhelming. "I hate these creatures! They offer no dignity in death! Death is my province and they ruin it. These mindless creatures have no respect." He cast off his cloak revealing his frame and an array of weapons on his belt. He takes up his mace and begins the grisly task of smashing the teeth out of the beasts. He seemed to enjoy his work as he began to smile wide at his destruction of the vile creatures.

"If you want to help you're more than welcome."

"Ah. ignorance: my true enemy." Maccabeus said sagely. "At least, that's what my preceptor kept telling me." He chuckled quietly.

"People are an interesting lot." Maccabeus observed. "Anything is subject to being labeled as evil based upon their fears. I include myself, of course. I'm not divine after all." He laughed at that thought.

"I find that one of the hardest things to impress upon people is that death is a natural occurrence, and her agents are not necessarily evil. I knew one who referred to himself as a Death Guide. Most folks hated him, seeing him as one who brought death. What they failed to take into account is that death is coming any way. He was there ease the transition. I don't know that I want to be alone for that transition. As natural as it is, it is still an intimidating transformation, you know?"

"Ach, hear how morbid I sound! I'm sorry, Severen. I'm sure that you're not here to discuss such things. What is it that you'd have me witness?"

"I get amused at people's ignorance in their assumptions of who I am based on what I am. Without even talking with me to find out my purpose or persuasions they assume that I'm the evil one. From my point of view it's their ignorance that leads to evil. At the end of the night it is what it is. If they choose to live with their head in the sand then so be it. "Be carerful, if you've no affinity. He is not tame or domestic in the urban sense."

"Tell me, Severen, what is it that you do here in Threshold?"
