"Most assuredly.  The first round is on me.  You'll have to tell me more about that dark priest you mentioned.   Thanks again for the ride.   Its truly appreciated!

Come on Maal let's get you inside.  Hopefully Ashe will take care of you."

Dale hops out of the cart and waits for Maal to drag herself out as well.   He doesn't offer a hand to Maal, becasue he does not wish to offend her.  He does however keep a concerned eye on her and readies himself to aid her if she should prove to be unsteady.

Dale pulls out a chair and sits down in it.   As he looks around the room, he starts to make a mental note of all the stuff that Ashe owns.  After looking over Ashe's stuff, he observes the three boys lying on the bed.   When an opportunity arises, he introduces himself.  "I'm Dale.  I was just hired by Julius Hawkhaven to help protect Treshold.   He told me that you might be able to help me answer some questions that I have, but I can see you're busy.   I'll wait here until things quiet down.  Mind if I have a look around?"   If Ashe allows him to Dale will peruse his stock of herbs and potions.   Otherwise, he will sit quietly and patiently wait for Ashe to finish tending to Maal.

Player's note:   Blackspear is taveling to Montana for a few days and will be glad to pick this conversation up later.   If things progress without him, please assume that he would go to the inn to buy the drinks that he promised to the farmers.   He would also grill Thurgin about the dark priest that he alluded to and ask Ashe about Valekai.   Take care.

After helping Ashe tend to Maal,  Dale fishes through his pack for the bull's head symbol that he picked up earlier in the day.   He grasps the oddly shaped metal.  It is cool to the touch.   Not wanting to hold onto it  too long, Dale quickly thrusts the medallion towards Ashe and says "We slew a bunch of insect like men that were wearing this symbol.  They had desecrated an ancient temple to the four elemental gods.   It's located just past Coryndar Fields.  Do you know what it represents?"

"We were told by Julius to go inspect a report of bandits near Coryndar fields.   When we arrived there, farmer MacDougal directed us to a large patch of brambles behind the fields.   He said that the bandits had been seen wandering through Coryndar Fields and entering into the brambles.   So we went towards the brambles where we could clearly see a path had been worn through the field leading to the the thorn patch.   As we arrived at the brambles the path became a dark trail of ash or soot.   The trail led to a break in the brambles.   After organizing our party, we entered the brambles.  It was quite dark inside, like walking through an old forest.   The trail led us through the brambles like a maze.   After a short distance, we went by some pools of foul, stinking, oily, water.   After inspecting the area that the first pool was in we were attacked by an insect like man with a nasty blade akin to a falchion.   We defended ourselves fairly easily and quickly dispatched our attacker.   Upon inspecting his person, we discovered that symbol.   Not wanting to leave it behind, I took it and placed it in my pouch.   We carried on and discovered a few more pools.    These pools were bubbling and we spent a great deal of time trying to understand why they were bubbling.   Our best guest was that there were springs in the pool.   Although we weren't positive that the bubbling wasn't caused by one of those foul creatures that had attacked us earlier.   We carried on through the maze of brambles and eventually found our way to the standing stones.   There were four of the creatures chanting and dancing around the stones.  The were in a trance that caused them to be unaware of us.   We drew up a plan and attacked them.    As before, we dispatched them all relatively easily.     After the battle, we searcged around the standing stones and found four large symbols of Zyxu Archeon placed over each of the symbols for the four elements.   Maccabeus a druid, was exttremely upset and we tried to remove the symbols from the stones.   Maal was the first to try.   She smashed one of the symbols and it exploded all around her.   It greatly weakened her and we determined to treat the remaining symbols with more caution.   Our best plan unfortunately,  was to throw the symbols like frisbees at the standing stones.   They each in turn were destroyed.   I only hope that we didn't cause any damage to the standing stones.    After that we searched the stones some more, but found nothing.    As we were leaving the maze, we noticed that the water in the pools was returning to a more clean state.   Our best guess is that the insect men had defiled the springs by living in or at least bathing in the pools.   We returned to Coryndar Fields and spoke with Farmer MacDougal.   We assured him that everything was fine for now.
At this point our party split up.   Ragnar headed to town to report to Julius, Maal and I came here, and Maccabeus stayed at Coryndar Fields to keep an eye out for any more suspicious activity.
The stones themselves seemed to be in good shape, but they are entangled in the brambles.   I would like to go back and study them.    I intend to do so tomorrow.   What can you tell me of the stones?

On their way to the Foot, Dale asks Ashe an important question that has been waying on his mind for quite some time.   "I am wondering if you will tell me a little bit about the history of this town and the valley.   Specifically I am interested in the mage wars and Valekai.   What do you know about that dark period of history?"
Dale is very nervous, his heart is beginning to beat rapidly, his stomach is flipping over and spinning around all at the same time.   He prays to any god who will listen that Ashe will not persecute him for being a wizard.   As he anxiously waits for Ashe's reply, he wipes away a drop of sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand.

"Valekai.   Julius Hawkhaven told me to seek you out.  He said that you are the only person in Threshold that would know anything about him."

I hope to hell that this guy doesn't try to split me open like he did to that symbol of Zyxu Archeon.

As Dale is having second thoughts about discussing Valekai with Ashe, he starts trying to remember the words to that sleep spell that he memorized last night.

A quick escape might be in order.   Bloody spell!  How does it go again?!!   AW CRAP!!!   I already used it on those bug guys back at the standing stones!   I hope I can flat run faster than this guy if he decides he doesn't like me.

Dale starts to eye Ashe's physique to measure his chances in a foot race.

"Well, I've been trying to make  a study of the mage wars and nearly every thing I discover mentions him, but their is very little explanation about him.   He seemed to be the pivotal figure of the war, yet no one seems to know much about him.   His life and role in the wars is quite mysterious.  The one solid piece of info that I have discovered about him is that for a period of time, Threshold was his home.   I just can't understand how such a crucial person in the greatest war that our lands have ever known, is all but lost to history."

If this guy doesn't begin to answer my question I'm just going to switch topics.   He's way too suspicious...

I think she'll be fine, but you should probably inquire with Ashe.   He has taken charge of her care.

"Before I go, let me tell you about what we found."   Dale retells the story much in the same fashion as he had told to Ashe only a short time ago...

"When we arrived at Coryndar Fields, farmer MacDougal directed us to a large patch of brambles behind the fields. He said that the bandits had been seen wandering through Coryndar Fields and entering into the brambles. So we went towards the brambles where we could clearly see a path had been worn through the field leading to the the thorn patch. We defended ourselves fairly easily and quickly dispatched our attacker. Upon inspecting his person, we discovered a symbol of Zyxu Archeon. It looks like a silver or steel steer head, with one black horn.   Not wanting to leave it behind, I took it and placed it in my pouch. We carried on and discovered a few more pools. These pools were bubbling and we spent a great deal of time trying to understand why they were bubbling. Our best guess was that there were springs in the pool. The stones themselves seemed to be in good shape, but they are entangled in the brambles. I would like to go back and study them and I intend to do so tomorrow.
After our adventure, I escorted Maal to Ashe's.   He's taken care of her and she is sleeping off her illness.
I showed Ashe the symbol, and he told me to be wary of it.   Not wanting to take a risk like Maal did, I threw it on the ground and shattered it.
What can you tell us about the standing stones?"

Readers note:   I began a new thread "Merriment at the Thornhedge" as Wildfire was writng the last post on this thread.  I did not see his post until long after I had posted mine.   Not intending to snub Himo and Ragnar, I modified my post to at least acknowledge Ragnar as Dale passed him in front of the inn.   Sorry for the confusion.

General Info / The Druids of N'arth
July 27, 2005, 11:20:55 PM
The Druids of N?arth

The druids of N?arth are the agents of Flaern, goddess of nature.   They tend to all the regions of N?arth except for Ogre?s Hold, the Withered Wood and the Black Wood.   The druids? stronghold is located at Elliira?s Glen in northern N?arth, where they maintain an academy on their sacred grounds.
Since the time of Elliira Arkhen, the first priest of Flaern, the druids have had a tumultuous relationship with the Wyvernstar family.    Alec Wyvernstar?s betrayal of Flaern was the beginning of a long and bloody feud between the druids (led by the Arkhen family) and the Wyvernstars.   Their battles over nearly everything have become legendary.   This has led to the druids becoming the most militaristic of all priesthoods.   To protect themselves, the druids train their acolytes to bladesing and they pursue their martial training with rangers who are also devoted to Flaern.   The falchion is the favored weapon of the druids.
The druids devote themselves to weapons practice early in their careers, thereby deferring their study of shape changing until they have become powerful protectors of their faith.   Even the toughest swordsman has a healthy respect for a druid?s battle prowess.
Most Druids tend to be chaotic, reflecting their goddess? attitude.   They enjoy the freedom of living in the wild and they relish the opportunity to hunt the enemies of Flaern.   Some druids however, value the order of law, particularly the Arkhens.
The Arkhens have been and always will be the guiding hand of the priests of Flaern.   For thousands of years, the Arkhen family has sent their third and fourth sons and daughters as well as their cousins to become druids.   Over 50% of the druids have Arkhen blood.    This does not mean however, that the druids are at the beck and call of the Arkhen family.   Although a very strong alliance does exist, there have been many instances of feuds between the two factions.   Their have also been many more instances of the druids allying with the Arkhen family in politics and in warfare.   The druids have also come to rely on the aid of the Arkhen family in their quest to vanquish the foes of Flaern, particularly the Wyvernstar family.
The druids primary goals are to eradicate the enemies of Flaern (including the Wyvernstars, wyverns, and all minions of Delthara), to protect the land of Flaern, and to return the balance to the land that was lost during the Sundering.

Game Notes
Druids function as the description in the 3.5 players handbook with the following exceptions:
1.   All druids use the ranger base attack bonus.   However they can not wild shape until 8th level.
2.   All druids gain the bonus feat of bladesinging at 1st level.   This feat allows the druid to defend himself with his chosen weapon.   This defense is equal to the druid?s level divided by 2 (rounded down).  Thus a 5th level druid gains a +2 to his A.C.   A first level druid gains a +1 to his A.C.   Druids must designate their chosen weapon for bladesinging from the following list: quarterstaff, scimitar, falchion, or sickle.   Because of their bladesinging ability druids are not proficient with shields.
3.   At 4th level, druids must choose to have the ability to select an alternative animal companion (PHB pg.36) or gain the feat of Bladecasting.    Bladecasting allows the druid to cast spells while wielding a weapon.   In other words it allows the druid to disregard somatic components while casting a spell when bladesinging.  The druid can not attack with his weapon and cast a spell in the same round.   However he does not lose the A.C. bonus that he gains from the bladesinging feat.
4.   At 7th level the druid will gain either a more powerful animal companion or Improved Bladesinging.   Improved Bladesinging grants +2 to hit and damage when attacking with his chosen weapon.
5.   Druids are expected to tithe 33% of their earnings to Flaern.  This can be done in a variety of ways including donating directly to the druidic hierarchy, paying for projects designed to protect the natural environment of N?arth, or simply returning the metals or gems to the earth in a very solemn ceremony of thanks on the Fall Equinox.   There are small caches of gems, gold and silver buried all over N?arth.   It is considered ominous bad luck to raid a druid?s cache.
