Duthash Zinnyas Syncath [9 May]
Evening at the Mushroom o' the Stump

This would take place after Maal Brengain, Laren and Dale have settled down for their evening meal and drinks in the semi-private back room/kitchen of the Stump, following their sighting of the wyvern-creature flying away into the distance towards the Valley of the Mist.

After taking another long pull from her tankard of ale, Maal Brengain looks sidelong over at Dale.  "Ye still sleepin' in th' comm'n room o're at th' inn, Dale?  With tha' stinky dwarf?"  The wildlander's compact mouth is serious (she very rarely smiles), but Laren and Dale notice an odd, almost playful, gleam in her eye.

This man thinks too much.

"I haven't been there yet.  Besides its a good opportunity to take a random patrol around town.
I've been wondering.  How is that all of the troops were pulled out of town and we were hired as guards?  Did the townsfolk protest this at all?  Did Julius try to lobby to keep them here?  It seems to me that we make a poor replacement for an entire squadron of soldiers.   I'm probably too suspicious, but I can't help but think that something fishy is going on here.   With that winged snake being an advanced scout, I can't help but wonder if the troops were pulled out of town in some corrupt arrangement to soften it up for the minions of Xan Thakos....
You're probably thinking I'm crazy, but I can't help it.  Being paranoid is what has kept me alive over the years.  My mind is always on the lookout for any threats.  It helps to keep me one step ahead of danger."

Upon hearing Dale call to her, Maal Brengain halts and waits for him to catch up.

"Aye, Dale, I'll go with ye... Yet, methinks tha' th' keep is likely locked up. I dinna think tha' Julius an' th' Council would leave it wide open with so many strangers an' whatnot comin' inta th' town lately."

She shrugs and adds, "Tha's just me instinct... We can still go take a look if'n ye like."

"Have a pleasant evening Julius."  Dale spins and walks away as well.  He still doesn't trust the councillor.  He may be looking into things, but his instinct tells him the Julius is hiding something.
Once Dale is out of earshot of Julius, he calls to Maal, "Hey wait up!"   Dale jogs to catch up with Maal.  Once he reaches her he says, "I'm going to go check out the fortress.  I'd like to see what's there.  Do you want to come?"

Maal Brengain is already striding away and gives no response to Julius' query (whether she is ignoring it or didn't hear it is unclear). She marches off into the night, intending to return to the inn and finally lay down to rest for the evening.

Maal Brengain stares straight at Julius as she replies, "Well, I 'ope th' oth'r council members return soon. There be trouble a-brewin' an' we canna wait ferev'r ta make these decisions."

The tall wildlander purposefully ignores the more personal question of how she is adjusting to the town. She is not willing to open up to Julius on such a personal level yet and still stubbornly refuses to call this place home, though she is becoming more and more comfortable in the town and among the folk every day.

"I think tha's all fer now, Julius... But ye should be aware tha' I'll be keepin' a close eye on this Severen fella. If'n 'e's up ta no good then we'll know o' it..."

With that, Maal Brengain turns abruptly on her heel and strides away back down the road.

"Good. I'm glad you do. The grief of the cave is still somwhat near to them. They need to talk in their own time. Right now is not good to question them...their minds are still delicate. They've had herbal treatment from Ashe and their cuts are healing well. They just need some time. Right now though the winged snake is a great priority." Julius says "Is there anything else that I need to know about? How are all of you adjusting to Threshold? Do you like it here?"

Realizing that Julius is blackmailing him to shut his mouth or have his magic wielding secret revealed, Dale gives Julius a beguiling grin and says "I understand perfectly."
I wonder what this guy's secret is.  This guy certainly bears more scrutiny.

"Say Julius, I have a couple of questions for those three family members that were in the cave.  Would it be alright if we visited them for a few minutes."

Dale doesn't really have any questions, but he is still suspicious about Julius(His city ways are still ingrained in him.  Be suspicious of everyone).  He wants to make sure that  Julius' guests are being treated well.

"Whoa, that's alot of questions. Okay, The Fortmount is vacant that's true. However, giving you residence there is something that I have to speak with the council about. I don't forsee any problem with it but still, the other council members do have a say with it since it's owned by the town. They should be returning any day now so please try to be patient." Julius explains.

He then looks directly at Dale and says, "Since you are new here Dale I'll be patient in my explaination of Severen's arrival. Threshold is open to any that want to honor their deities...just like the Valley of Mist. Does it open it up for trouble from some? Perhaps it does. But it's that freedom that allows everyone to come here with little fear of discrimination...even those with their own dark secrets. Do you understand?" Julius said firmly.

"Yeah a good night's sleep would help me out a lot!   I've been getting really punchy over a few things.   For example, why did you invite that priest of Takhisis into town anyway?   Don't we have enough trouble with winged snakes and rat men, without Takhisis' minions setting up a stronghold here?"  Dale takes a deep breath and a step back, waiting for Julius' reply, wondering how he will react to his bold question.

Maal Brengain grunts in response, "Tha' is a good idea. I'll speak with Jarmok aboot it... I think 'e would be perfect fer a night-time patrol."

Then, after a pause she continues, "Er, Julius, I believe Jarmok 'ad asked ye aboot th' Protectorate using th' keep up there as a 'eadquarters now tha' it's empty [Jarmok visits Julius (http://griznuq.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=377)]... "That's alright Maal. The important thing is that we know that it's around and that we should be on guard for it. I'd like to think that it was just passing through but we both know that's not the case. I want The Protectorate to set up a night march around the town since these creatures probably move at night. Could you arrange that among yourselves?"

Julius gets a grave look on his face and says, "It is said that the winged snakes are elite agents of The Shadow Riders of Xanthakos. I don't really understand their function fully but my guess would be that of advance scouts...or spies. They're an ill omen at best."

Julius looks out beyond into the night sky, "You reported that they were at the cave where you fought the lizard people?"

Dale looks at Laren and wonders what its like to live life being so small.  Probably much like being a 10 year old kid.   Then again, most ten year olds don't face large winged snakes.  That creature could easily confuse Laren for its next meal.  I wonder if it would swallow him whole?
Stirring from his musings he inquires of the councillor, "Julius, would you please tell us what you know about this shape changing winged serpent?   It flew off towards the valley."

Julius steps outside and closes the door. "I have the three family members here with me. The little girl that you found walking the road and the boy and woman that were in the cave. They didn't have anywhere to go and no money so I took them in. They've been through so much." Julius says in a hushed tone.

"So you say that there were teeth knocked out of the scavengers and the dead family? That's...bizarre. And you said you saw it. What did you see exactly?"

It seems tha' some... thing has been removin' the teeth and claws from the wolf-rats an' humans. I 'ave no idea why or what tha' means, though."

"Furthermore, Jarmok found booted man-like tracks leading into an' outta th' cave. We then tried ta catch th' culprit an' followed 'im through th' woods to a cliff where the tracks disappeared. It was there tha' we saw... it. We all saw it... This canna be good!"

While checking the proximity of the Temple of Shadows to Julius's house Dale notices on a high ridge above and between the two locations the Fortress overlooking Threshold. He sees only the tops of the walls but nevertheless it is an impressive sight.

The door opens and Julius is standing there in loose comfortable clothes smoking a pipe. Even his casual clothes look to be well made and fine. His salt and pepper hair drapes slightly onto his shoulders giving him an elegantly rugged look.

"Oh!" he says with surprise, "Is there something happening that I should know about?"

"Well, it looks like Master Julius has done quite well for himself.   Gold leaves and all."   Dale quickly raps his fist on the door with three sharp knocks.  He then stands back and waits to see Julius.   While he waits at the door, he surveys the neighborhood and tries to take note of just how close the councillor's house is to the temple of Takhisis.

The three arrive to Julius's house. the front door is gilded with the goldleaves. A soft glow emanates from inside and lights the windows. They have a thin frame of stained glass around the paned clear glass. Smoke rises from the chimney floating up towards the colored moons. The sounds from the other parts of the town are quite sedate in this quarter of Threshold.

"I won't be harmin' him unless he causes trouble, but I have no patience for his kind.   They cause others to suffer in the name of their god.   They claim its to make their victims stronger, but you never see them putting themselves through torture to become stronger.  On the contrary they always inflict their pain and suffering on others.   It just rankles me that we're gonna have to deal with this guy's crap!!"   Having explained himself, Dale composes his demeanor to meet with Julius.  Although he hasn't completely ruled out a well time dope slap to the councilor's forehead.   In his head he can't help but thinl"UGHH!  What a moron!......... I hope Julius ain't one of them.....Ughhh!"

"Get a 'old o' yeself, man! Keep yer wits aboot ye!"

Maal Brengain pauses and turns to face Dale, "Let's no' judge tha' fella by wha' 'e represents... let us judge 'im by 'is actions."

The wildlander's eyes narrow and her face hardens, "We can keep a close eye on 'im, an' if'n 'e gets out o' line then we'll show 'im how ta be'ave." Her scarred upper lip curls upward into an ugly sneer, "Sound good?"

After a pause, "All right, Hawkhaven's house is just up this road..."

Maal Brengain steps past Dale and leads the way down the last stretch of road to Julius' door.

The group passed by the Knightstar Armory and came to a split in the road. To the left was a road leading to the Doubeck's Festhall, The Temple of Shadows, and Ashe's house. To the right the road quickly split again. Maal remembered that Julius's house was to the left on that second split.

In actuality the road looped around creating a large loop and going down on of the roads would lead one to exit by the road not taken. Julius's house was towards the back of the loop.

The streets here were sparsely lit by lanterns and the noises from the forest seemed to be better heard around here. Occasional walkers would nod their hello and quietly continue their stroll through the wealthier section of town. The houses here were magnificent in their grandeur. Even the smaller ones had ornaments that spoke of the owners deep pockets. some of the doors were gilded with the gold and copper leaves from the unique trees that grew here. This was a lavishness that these three people had rarely known...if at all.

Dale begins to speak in a very agitated and animated manner, "So which house is Julius' anyway?   and what on Mahiya is he thinking?  Who does he think he is, inviting  a sewer rat like that Severen to town?  Does he like pain and suffering?   Our job is tough enough with rat men and strange beasts that defile Mahiya and others that look like flying snakes.   Is he crazy?  Inviting a priest of Takhisis to town.  Nothing good will come of this.  Mark my words!   Nothing Good!!"   Completely exasperated, Dale looks around at Maal and says "Where are we going?   You go ahead and lead the way.....Priest of Takhisis.....what a jackasss!!!"

Stepping on to the river island locally known as 'The Foot' the group hears some music and laughing coming from The Cliffside Inn up ahead. The area is well lit from the lantern on the Rosewalk, the Wolfsong, and the Spike of Fire on the other end of the island. this part of town is slightly more sedate than eastern side but still active. From across the river noise can be heard flowing from a large building known as 'Doubeck's Festhall'.

On the hills and cliffs surrounding Threshold light from houses and from firepits can be seen twinkling amongst the dark of the trees. The moons are rising in casting an odd mixture of colors into the sky and passing clouds.

Ahead is the Wolfsong Bridge and beyond and to the right is a quieter quarter of Threshold. Many of the buildings and houses here are grander than the commoner sections of the town. Still, all are welcome if intentions are peaceful.

Severen looks cooly at Dale and says, "As long as you take no special preference to trying to bash my head in over any one else's then I respect your place and position in this town. As for being here...I was sent to replace the the priest that was here before me. I understand the there was an extermination of sorts in regards to certain folk...Priests among them. So whether or not I have followers makes little difference since I am here as a representative to maintain the balance of power between all of deities."

As he waits for Severus' reaction to his threat, Dale thinks to himself, "This guy needs to go.   What the hell was Julius thinking, inviting this piece of dung to Threshold?  Is he trying to test his new protectorate, or is he secretly working against us?  I think I might have to go cuff him upside the head once we get to his house.   Followers of Takhisis are bad news.   Priests of takhisis are pure evil.   Moron...Aren't Ratmen and followers of Zyxu Archeon enough excitement for one little backwater hamlet?    Why the hell is this place attracting so much trouble?"

Dale gives Severus a cold and calculating grin.   Looking him directly in the eye, he matter of factly states, "You don't offend me either.   Although I'll have no problem bashing your skull in if you cause any trouble.   I hope you don't take offense to that....
Its just my way of making sure no one gets out of line...

Maal Brengain glares at Severen in defiance with her chin held high and proud, "Nay, ye presence does no' set me ill-at-ease. Ye ar' free ta honor any god ye like. I am a follow'r o' Kossuth, meself. I care no' who ye choose."

Severen looks at each one in the group and replies, "A priest I am. From Rhohannus I come...brought here by a calling. I Honor Takhisis by The Order of Living Night."

Dale scans for any signature trademarks on Severen and sees only a silver chain with a round medallion on it. The medalion is a circle with five bars fanning out from the bottom to the top. He wears very fine clothes that are black as ink. Around his waist is a sturdy silver chain that clasps in the front with a buckle that mimics his necklace. Curiously enough, he carries no weapons.

Severen smiles and says, "I know that many do not appreciate the contributions that my kind offer to this existence so I must ask...does my presence here make you ill at ease?"

I would rath'r wake Julius needlessly now (if indeed he be sleepin'), instead o' waitin' 'til mornin' an' discov'rin' tha' we wait'd too long. I think we already wast'd too much time..."

Maal Brengain pauses momentarily as she notices the robed figure ahead. Unintimidated, she approaches the man. "Hail stranger, are ye new in Thresh'ld?"

Approaching the Rosewalk the three can see that the people passing over the bridge are keeping a noticeable distance away from an man standing on the south side of the bridge staring off in the distance. He is darkly robed and hooded.

"Do you think it a little late in the day? He may wish not to be disturbed. Perhaps we should wait until morning?"

"Then again, we have come this far already. Though, I didn't realize how late it was. It is some pretty important stuff that went on. Of course there doesn't seem to be any immediate threat between now and tomorrow morning. I would like to sleep in tomorrow though."

Laren seemed to be arguing with himself. Making descisions was not something that he was very comfortable with of late.

Maal Brengain shows no reaction to Dale's quip as she marches along. She passes by the darkened Council House and heads towards the Rosewalk. She had not expected Julius to be at the Council House this late anyway. Her intention is to look for him at his home.

Mall passes by the drunkard paying him no mind and from behind she hears a deep bass voice say, "Good sir! You ought to have more respect. No lady wants to dance with a drunken fool. Just walk away to bed and sober up before you get into trouble." Laren and Dale look back and see a towering, muscular Half-Orc with his large hands on the drunks neck.

As the troupe gets closer to the Rosewalk they can see that the Council house is locked and dark. The bright lanterns on the bridge and the street light the faces of the passer-bys in an orange-yellow glow.

"Hey Maal, you should have danced with that guy.  You could have introduced him to your spear..."

Maal Brengain steps past the the drunken man and continues on her way, showing no sign of response, as if she did not hear him at all.

There is determination in her every step as she maneuvers through the crowded evening streets of Threshold, heading towards the Rosewalk.

Laren looks from the drunk to Maal, and back to the drunk... and back to Maal.

Wonder what this guy's been drinking... he thinks to himself, showing only a slight smirk.

Stepping out into the night the group sees that the streets are filled with people drinking and dancing. The inner-town street lamps are lit and reach from the crossroads at the Thornhedge, down a ways towards the Valley, also across The Rosewalk and The Wolfsong and some beyond that.

As Maal is beginning to make her way through the crowd a drunken man in simple peasant clothes looking to be in his thirties approaches her. "Looovelyy miiiss, " he says in his drunken, slurry voice, "Would you care toooo have a dance wid mee? I thinkin' that you pretty..."

Laren hops up and scurries out the door behind her.

Not waiting for Dale to answer, Maal Brengain voices another thought: "Y'know, it occurs ta me tha' none o' us 'ave bother'd ta report wha' we saw ta Julius yet. It may be gettin' late, but I think he needs ta know aboot wha' we saw in th' sky t'nigh'... I'm gonna go knock on 'is door."

The tall Wildlander takes a last, long pull from her mug of ale and then abruptly stands up. She then picks up her shield and weapons from the floor and prepares to head out into the night...

Maal Brengain stares at Dale in silence for a long moment before suddenly snorting out loud at his unexpected bit of humor. Her scarred lip curls up awkwardly into a crooked grin.

"Heh! I like yer sense o' hum'r, Dale!"

"Anyw'y, th' reas'n tha' I menti'n it," she continues, "is b'cause I'm thinkin' tha' we should take a look at th' keep t'night after our meal. It's been suggested b'for' tha' it could be used as our base, so perhaps we should jus' stay there t'night to guard it. No snorrin' dwarfs! Jus' the cool Sythus night air! Th' soldiers 'ave all marched away, so it should be empty now anyw'y. What say ye both?"

The young Wildlander woman glances from Dale to Laren to gauge the response to her suggestion and then leans back and takes another long pull from her tankard. The unusual grin has already faded from her face, yet her manner is still rather unusually light and carefree.

"Yeah.   Unfortunately after seeing all those dead corpses today, that dwarf is gonna smell like roses."
