Title: 12.23.2132 - Investigation
Post by: Johan on June 19, 2008, 11:15:31 PM
Lunch at the cafeteria was never truly satisfying, but it was Temmit's favorite price: free. He had filled his over-sized ceramic stein with coffee before heading back out into the winter streets and made his way to the Marks' Tavern. Hopefully Leslie would be there, and if not, Mr. Marks might know where the little sprite had gotten off to.

He entered the inn, but there was no one in the main lobby, where guests and tenents rented the rooms of the inn. He turned to the right and passed through the narrow swinging doors and into the tavern. He cast about for Leslie, preferrably, but failing that, for Mr. Marks.

Being the dead of winter, the Riverfront hot spot wasn't as hopping as it typically was in the warmer seasons. Only a few quiet patrons, getting a drink after a late lunch or before an early dinner, were sitting about.

Leslie wasn't spotted, but her mother Pamela had just turned about from a customer at a booth and spotted Temmit.

"Heyas dear, how you doing me boy?" she said, waving him over to the bar as she walked behind it.

Mrs. Marks was probably the most kind-hearted woman Temmit knew. A bit short and plump, those who didn't know her would be surprised at the strength, endurance and speed of the woman. She had four children by Mr. Marks, but Temmit always thought she considered many in Whisper as her own.

As Temmit half-sat on a bar stool she took his stein without a word and spilled the horrid cafeteria coffee from it, pouring in her own special dark roast that she knew he loved. The routine was so familiar to Temmit's, his mind barely recorded it.

"Thank you, Mrs. Marks." Temmit said respectfully. "How's things here? Quiet, it looks." He took a draught from his cup, and Mrs. Marks knew from the glaze that developed over his eyes that her coffee set him right.

"Well, things be as quiet as what normally are this time of year." Mrs. Marks replied with a smile as she started to wipe down some glasses.

"How 'bout you dear? Anything bring you down to the River besides my dark roast?"

Temmit smiled fondly at Mrs. Marks. "A-ya." He said. "I'm actually in search of Leslie. Any idea where she's hiding?"

Pamela smiled and replied, "Leslie is where she always is during the slow months of winter, her nose in a book at the Library."

"Thanks Mrs. Marks...and thanks for the coffee," Temmit replied. He stood up off the bar stool, and knowing she would refuse coin for the coffee, made his way to leave with a polite nod.

"Might I burden you with one favor Young Master," Mrs. Marks asked while stopping her hands from their work and leaning her elbows on the bar.

"Of course Mrs. Marks, anything," Temmit replied sincerely.

"Well, I know that the work that you kids[/i] do is really important, and I don't want Leslie shirking in her duties in that regard. However..." Mrs. Marks waited for Temmit to lean in a bit closer, her words a queue that she intended to speak closely on Whisper matters.

"...if you could just reign in Leslie a bit for me. She seems to be sneaking out every single night now, to go off to do important work, but nevertheless I am afraid for her safety." Pamela added.

Temmit sobered and looked at Mrs. Marks squarely. "Aye, Mrs. Marks." He answered. "I'll look after her as though she was my very own kin. She certainly needs a night off or two. Perhaps three, even."

He smiled reassuringly at Mrs. Marks, and stood straight, on his way to the library.

He heard her say "Thanks Young Master", as he walked out the door.

Once outside, Temmit found the day once again returning to blistery cold. The wind had picked up considerably, and although it wasn't snowing, the small crystals of snow that the wind picked up made the walk just as unpleasant as any storm.

He reached the main road and walked up the western edge of the city's valley, finally passing the gates of the School District and beyond. He had never been so happy to see the Library's entrance in his entire life.

Beyond the tall ancient pine doors he entered the massive foyer and warmed up by one of the pair of roaring fireplace guardians. The blazing heat from the bonfires in each fireplace kept the foyer relatively warm as they battled against the cold just beyond the entry doors. After a few turns, he was finally warm enough to take off his jacket and cold-weather gear, hanging the items on one of the hundreds of wall-pegs created for the exact purpose. He then passed another set of double doors and proceeded down the main hall.

The Library in the School District was the central location of all knowledge known to the Kingdom in it's two millennia history. It was therefore by necessity, a very large place. But this wasn't the first time Temmit had to track the young girl in the place, and he had a hunch where she might be in the building.

Walking by archways on the left and right of the main hall, each one leading to a room holding a specific category of information, he finally reached "Ancient History". He paused, listened, and then quietly turned right into the room.

And there she was as expected.

At one of the many long ancient pine tables, Leslie sat alone, completely immersed in a book larger than her. On the table she was surrounded by enough books that she could easily consider the wall of parchment and paper to be a fortification. To her left, a tiny hooded lantern assisted her as she read. There were only a few other students in the large room, and Temmit knew that none were within ear shot if he decided to whisper to her.

As usual, the little girl didn't even notice his entry, and Temmit knew she wouldn't know of his existence here until he actually announced his presence, so engrossed was she in her story.

Temmit felt oddly out of place for a few moments. He wasn't sure how to approach. He didn't want to cause Leslie any undue start, and thus create one of those characteristically girlish 'yelps' that echoed in the library.

Problem was, he couldn't think of a way to avoid it.

"Just jab her in the ribs and be done with it." Smokey urged.

Temmit laughed, his slight grunt punctuated the silence of the hall nicely.

He moved closer, being sure to drag his feet slightly and clomp them a bit. "Found you at last." He said as he approached her table.

The girl still jumped, but luckily she hiccupped at the same time, stifling her yelp. After she recovered she looked up at him and smiled. Then looked around as though she had forgotten where she was.

Stretching her arms over her head she finally asked, "Hello Temmit, what..." hiccup[/i] "brings you hear?"

"You do." He answered matter-of-factly.

"I have been meaning to ask a question or two of you; unfortunately I've had an extraordinarily busy weekend." He pulled out a chair next to her, nestled among the tomes, and sat in it.

"How did you manage to filch that diary?" He asked her flatly.

"Excuse me," she said and put her hand over her mouth.

"Oh..well, that is"...hiccup[/i]..."just strange is all" she exclaimed, now ignoring her hiccups.

"Anyway, I found it in the vault beyond this very room. Beyond the last aisle, number 28B where the volumes are found on the Deadly Plague of 502 ESH, which are some great stories I will have to say, is the vault"...hiccup[/i]..."door in plain sight".

She paused and lowered her volume a bit, but the speed of her voice resumed. "Anyway, one night I came here to peruse the volumes with a detect magic cantrip as requested by Renee. A task that I have to tell you takes a very long time when one considers the sheer volume of this room, let alone the whole library"...hiccup[/i]..."sorry".

"Go on," Temmit said with a wave of his hand. He knew to ask her to get to the point only made her divulge even more detail and would make the entire ordeal that much longer.

"Anyway, I got here and the House Guard of Kaine was watching over some priests as they walked back and forth from the vault. The priests were emptying out volumes and volumes of books, journals and all other sorts of parchment. Not sure as to why though, they did have some shovels and sledgehammers with them though."...hiccup[/i]..."ooo, that would took a bit longer this time. Anyway, while they were pre-occupied with banging something that sounded like stone in the vault, I swiped the journal off the table while they weren't looking."

She stopped quite suddenly and smiled with pride.

Her smile faded a bit, Temmit could almost see the intellect behind the girls huge blue eyes recognizing the lecture he had been saving all weekend for her.

"I um...well, if they found me here I would just tell them that I um...wanted to do more reading," she answered simply, dodging the point.

...hiccup[/i]..."Oh! The contractions are getting father apart! I may live after all." she exclaimed.

"Damn, she's as dense as you are." Smokey observed. "Such smart people who can't see past their own fingers."

Temmit cast about for other people in the hall. He drew Smokey from within his shirt and hung the crystal over his back. "Just keep me aware of anyone who might be listening in." Temmit requested.

"Look! It's Fresenius!" Temmit knew deep down that Smokey was lying - jesting, the crystal would say - but he had to look anyway. There was no one.

"Thanks." He said.

"What? I didn't say anything."

"Leslie," Temmit began smoothly. "You should know that I am fully aware of all that you do for us." He looked at her quite pointedly. "But it's a dangerous path that you tread, and it's getting far more dangerous. I think that anyone who was watching you at our meeting this week would have known that you were the source that Renee kept referring to."

"We can't have that." He held her eyes. "I've asked Renee to stop being so complimentary to you in the future."

Her smile completely faded and for a long moment Temmit thought she was going to either burst out in anger or worse, start crying then and there.

"Alright Temmit," she said as her gaze lowered to her hands and she turned back towards her book. "But what would you have me do?" she asked in a whisper. "I am just trying to help like everyone else in the guild."

She then closed her mouth tight and attempted to stifle the next hiccup, the affect it had was almost comical as her eyes bulged and she then caught her breath wrong afterwards. She didn't smile though. "Sorry."

"Well, we certainly have a strong need for you to ply your talents."

"I think that what I would have you do is this: learn to play poker." Temmit suggested. "And I've got a few lessons for you now, if you have the time?"

"Poker?" she asked, obviously not getting it. Although the illegal card playing game was very popular amongst the older boys in the orphanage, it apparently never made its way into her life.

"In the game of poker," Temmit explained with patience, "it's not always the case that the player with the best card hand wins. It is often the case that the player whose hand isn't reflected in his face who wins."

"What you need to learn is to not look so proud when somone tells you that you've done well. Know that you always do well, and  you are always valued, but don't let anyone read from your face that you are the one who is being complimented."

"Tell me you understand, and that you would like to commence a lesson or two." He smiled at his young friend solicitously.

"I understand, you value my work and that is enough for me Temmit. I will try not to gloat or make myself more visible in the meetings," she answered in a surprisingly mature fashion.

It was at these moments...

'Hey her hiccups are gone! Try to scare her to bring them back!'

...that Temmit could sense that there was a very keen intellect indeed within the young Leslie, she just lacked the experience that came with age.

"So, what lessons do you have for me Mr. Tutor of all things wise?" she teased.

Temmit leaned even closer to Leslie. Anyone looking on might think that they were leaning in to kiss, he was so close.

He whispered almost impreceptibly, "Do you know the student Marcus Faithborn?" He asked.

I also need to know about his mother. Who is she? I have a theory that more or less depends upon her being close to Fresenius."

"Do you also know his mother?"

Leslie smiled in pride and then quickly caught herself, she successfully squelched her glee at being able to help.

"Marcus Faithborn was born in Southaven, he is 13 and a member of the Harvesters House. Up until about a month ago he was a completed introverted kid with no social skills whatsoever," Leslie began.

"I remember trying a couple..."

"Yes...?" Temmit prompted.

River is from there but he doesn't like talking to me, and Jared seems to have spent his entire time there with his head in the sand, he knows no one from his own hometown."

"Anyway, I tried talking to him and he shuddered away from me after making a strange animal cry sound, really bizarre. It was as if the kid had no idea how to talk to strangers. I have no idea how any kid could live like that."

"From what I have heard about him in the gossip trade at school, he is pretty much a loner because of this lack of being able to communicate. At least he was...until a month ago. Ever since his disappearance for that week in FallEnd break he has been a completely different person."

Leslie finally stopped her dissertation for a question of her own. "Why do you ask about him?"

(OOC: my nickname for the War Games and military exercises in school is of course, gym class[/i])

"Now though he is an "A-class" butt head if you ask me. Last week he was here in the library and stared at me for like an entire hand. I thought I would scare him by saying hello, and boy, was that a mistake."

Post by: Dray on June 21, 2008, 12:10:18 AM
Leslie caught on very quickly. "He's a threat to us isn't he?"

Temmit nodded.

With a heavy sigh, she answered his questions. "It was about a hand before curfew and he came into this very room, close to where we are sitting now and simply sat down. He watched kids come and go but seemed interested in watching me. He didn't even get up to get a book or anything."

"Anyway, I had books similar to the ones I have here. Simple books on history of our kingdom, nothing really damning or special. As I had said, I got tired of him looking at me so I simply looked up and said Hello[/i], thinking it would scare him off."

"It had the opposite affect."

"For you see, at the time, I didn't have as much information on him as I just revealed to you. It was only after he spooked me here that I purposely got the full story on him. So (at the time) I thought by greeting him, the introvert would run away."

Temmit nodded in understanding.

"He came over and sat near me. I smiled at first, as I was taken off guard by his uncharacteristic manner. I even had the stupid thought that perhaps he was coming out of his shell and Hey! Good for him![/i]"

"But the conversation he instigated got weird real fast. He asked me if there was anyone I knew at school who had a gang he could join. And that was like in the first two turns of the conversation! Anyway, he went on and on about his mother and how tough his life was, and since I smelled trouble, I merely placated his ego and acted like an innocent and stupid girl."

"When the clock tower bell tolled it was the most loveliest sound I had ever heard."

Temmit listened attentively to Leslie and nodded his understanding. "Well done." He said when she had finished.

"Marcus seems to be looking for a gang that he can join in order to cause trouble."

"At least, that's his apparent story. I'll be looking into him for a bit; let me know anything interesting about him that passes your way."

Smokey whispered a warning to him then, and he reiterated it to Leslie: "But don't go out of your way to try to find too much out. I wouldn't want him getting too interested in you. Also, don't believe a thing that he says."

"Now, what do you know about Mia Presscot?" He asked, changing the subject.

Quote from: JohanTemmit listened attentively to Leslie and nodded his understanding. "Well done." He said when she had finished.

Leslie had smiled proudly at Temmit's compliment.

She also seemed to listen and agree with the warning from Temmit, he sensed (via her body language) that she was creeped out by Marcus anyway.

Her smile lit up the room, as it so often did, when she heard Mia's name.

"Mia!" she almost shouted. Leslie looked around apologetically and then waited a moment for any onlookers to turn back to their books.

"Sorry," she apologized (to Temmit) with a smile. Then, whispering fiercely she said, "Mia is the best! I would switch houses just to hang out with her more, as we don't often get to even have lunch together let alone have the same class."

"Mia is very low-to-ground (OOC: expression that is akin to "down-to-earth") you might say. She isn't[/i] about trying to be it all to everyone..." Leslie made an 'eh-hem' sound as she cleared her throat "...like Renee. She is more about getting the job done. Which is completely opposite of the going gossip about her. It's funny when I hear someone slander Mia's reputation, always its someone who barely knows what she looks like, let alone has even talked to her. The going gossip spewed from the offendor's mouth is always so completely unjustified that it is almost laughable."

Leslie caught the all-too familiar raised eyebrow from Temmit.

"The griznuqs think she's a floozy," replied Leslie to the brow. "Just because she works as a fortune teller shop in Shantytown, one that is growing in popularity I might add, some girls in school think she must be giving more than just fortunes, if you know what I mean."

(OOC: Had to stop here, as I don't know if the "daft investigator" will actually know[/i] what the "pre-pubescent spy prodigy" is actual implying - which, would be hysterically funny I think.)

Temmit listened to Leslie's assessment of Mia gladly. Leslie was a good judge of character, and as she was clearly so fond of the little fortune-teller, Temmit was put much as ease.

"I'm glad to hear your character testament." He said to his young protoge. "She's this year's addition to the Clan."

Temmit had never seen something so adorably cute in all his life.

"When did this happen?!" she asked, failing at a Whisper.

Then, her little girl's enthusiasm kicked back in and a flurry of questions ensued.

"What are her abilities?"

"How did her interview go?"

"Was she thrilled?"

"What can she do?"

"Blow things up?!"

"Or is she a spy like me?!"

"Did you tell her I was in the clan?"

Temmit looked around nervously as Leslie rambled a little too loudly for his liking.

"Relax." Smoke said. "There's no one in earshot."

"Sshhh!" He admonished her. "Leslie, she's a fortune-teller." He whispered. "Her interview went really well, which is why we've invited her in." He gave her one of his 'you really should have that answer already' looks. "And since she hadn't really considered herself to have gifts to begin with, she was too busy digesting that notion to be thrilled, and no: we didn't give her any names."

"Which brings up another point: I'd appreciate it if you didn't share additional names with her at this point. As of right now, she's aware of myself, Renee, and Emma. Then there will be you. You can do that, right?"

"Yes...sorry," she answered. She didn't look hurt, but her composure had successfully switched to a more serious demeanor.

"I just want her to know that there are truly other kids around with gifts. I want you to be her friend, which, happily, you already seem to be."

"I may be overstepping a bound or two of my own here, but I would like for you to be her primary point of contact with the clan for her initiation period. Same as was done for you, or anyone. Does that work for you?"

"It does. We don't have the same dormitory, but they're more likely to let a girl like me in to the girls Artificers dorm before they would let in a guy from any House anyway. And when she is in ShantyTown, I know of a few passages in Lowtown that I would be more unfettered than in walking the above ground streets. But even if things get to risky in Lowtown, I can simply jump into a Lowtown alley and vanish with a Sneaky Draught."

Temmit watched as the young girl whispered her streaming thoughts.

"Perhaps my first order of business is helping her to determine where her true gifts lie. If I find that she is a seer or a clairsentient then I could correspond questions and answers between her and other like-minded members in the guild," she said as she pointed at Temmit without actually looking up at him.

"That way all can stay ignorant of each others identities."

She thought for a few moments and then finally looked up and smiled, not showing the slightest embarrassment for being caught thinking out loud.

"Anything else?"
