Title: Waiting for Kyle
Post by: fraz on September 19, 2005, 10:45:04 PM
Duthash Zinnyas Voldyn [7 May]

This takes place after Maal Brengain leaves Ashe at the Thornhedge Inn in "Aftermath (http://griznuq.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=535)".]

After going for a brief swim in the Fogveil, Maal Brengain dresses, grabs her spear and shield, and makes her way back through the busy streets to the Rosewalk. She crosses the bridge onto the Foot and begins heading towards Philip Stagdrake's leather shop, but suddenly hesitates...

She wants to talk to Kyle, not Philip. How will she get the young man away from his father without Philip knowing? Maal alters her stride and instead walks to the Cliffside Inn across the road from the leather shoppe. This could work. I could jus' get meself sumthin' ta drink 'ere an' wait fer Kyle ta hopefully come out or maybe pass by.

Maal makes her way through the heavy traffic to the front door of the inn and enters, seeking to quench her thirst...

Maal Brengain only rolls her eyes upward in response to Philp's comment.

"Kyle," she calls out, "come find me later when you're done with your work." With that said, she turns and heads outside.

She heads back towards the Thornhedge where she plans to sit for a while and enjoy an ale.

"Ooo...that does look like it hurt" Philip replies. "Well I'd love to stay and talk but I've some eager customers here and more come in by the minute. Kyle, I need you to get some stuff from the loft. Maal," Philip says leaning in close, "Thanks for doing this. He needs something to give him some control. He's been sort of wild since his Mom died."

"Eh? Well, we should begin with some, uh, defense," answers Maal Brengain. "He needs ta learn how to protect hisself properly first. He wants ta learn how ta use th' spear, but we'll need ta start with some long sticks instead o' sharp spears. Tha's somethin' I didn' get ta do, meself. When I learn'd, I was taught with real weap'ns."

"This," Maal points to her scarred upper lip, "was th' result o' one o' me first mistakes." Her scarred lip curls upward into an awkward, sneering smile as she continues, "I learn'd th' hard way! But I ne'er made tha' mistake ag'in."

Philip furrows his brow and says, "Ah...well that's kind of...unexpected. I don't know...he's been, well, irresponsible lately. Haven't you Kyle? He's been giving me nothing but grief for the last few weeks. Still, something like this could do him some good...give him some focus and control. I'm going to say yes...but on some conditions..."

Kyle eagerly says, "yeah, anything..."

"...your chores are finished for the day before practicing, you mind your studies, and you do exactly as Maal instructs to become as skilled as you can. Is it a deal?"

"Sure it's a deal!" Kyle says with a smile.

Philip says, "I trust you'll take care of my boy when you two are out...you have before. What are you going to teach him first?"

"Aye! Th' quiver is jus' fine, thank-ye," Maal Brengain responds as she greets Philip Stagdrake.

Her gaze locks onto his and, in her brutally straight-forward style, she gets right to the point of the matter:

"Uh, Philip, I ca' teach Kyle 'ere how ta fight an' defend his-self if ye will let me. He's eager ta learn... an' he ca' show me a thing or two aboot leather-workin' too, I'm sure. What say ye? Will tha' be all righ' with ye? He insisted tha' we asks ye first."

Over the Wolfsong and around the corner the two walked. There they wer at Bearded Beasts Leather Shop. Kyle opens the door and the place is being perused by customers. Philip is showing his wares and Kyle's younger brothers are at their tables working the craft.

Across the room Philip says, "...it's a fine buy. Great quality at a decent price. You won't find that in the city. Excuse me for a moment." Philip smiles at the other patrons and walks over to Maal and Kyle. "Ah Maal, good to see you. Thanks again for pulling this troublemaker out of his own stew. I don't know what gets in his head sometimes. All in all he's a good kid. How's the spear quiver? Does it work well?"

"Alright then, let's go see 'im right now b'fore I change me mind agin! I'll talk ta 'im an' try ta make 'im see how important this is."

"But I don' know why ye think yer Da'll listen ta me. No-'ne at 'ome ever did listen ta me an'... well... er," her voice trails off. "They jus' ne'er listened."

"Let's go!" Maal Brengain turns on her heels and starts heading back across the Wolfsong.

"Yeah! I can do that. I've been working leather since I was a wee kid. I can make just about anything from saddles to armor to bracelets. My Dad has to help me sometimes though...I don't know all of the tricks you see. So, I'll ask my Dad and when the time comes we can meet...er...where do you want to meet? My house...The Thornhedge...where?"

"Indeed, tha' sounds like a fair trade," answers Maal Brengain as her tough demeanor slowly returns. "I've been fortunate - only a few scrapes and bruises so far - but sooner o' later me armor 'er's," she thumps her leather chest plate with her right fist for emphasis, "gonna take a few knocks an' be needin' some repair.  If'n ye ar' able ta do it fer me, then all th' better."

The Wildlander takes another bite of meat and chews noisily with her mouth open.

"Yeah...you're probably right." Kyle says disappointedly. "Hey, y'know what? I'm pretty good at crafting leather, although my Dad wants me to help with the fields sometimes...he says that knowing how to grow crops can be very handy, anyway, if there's anything that you might need made or repaired as far as leather goes OOC:Keep the jokes down! I can do it. It'll be sort of a trade for one craft to another. Isn't that what Wildlanders do? That what Fergus says."

Maal Brengain is still a bit shaken up. "Er... Well... Look, maybe we should give yer Da a few days ta cool off first, eh? Whaddya think? There be no rush ta start this, so let's talk agin in a couple o' days. Let's do tha', all right?"

Kyle bends his head down and looks at Maal's face. Nervously he says, "I...I don't want to be any trouble for you. But I don't want to get in trouble again either. Look, I really want to do this. I'll talk to my Dad. You don't have to come with me when I do. He knows you...after all, he made the spear quiver for you. It should be okay. I'll meet you in Little Thresh in the mid-afternoon, okay?"

"Bah!" Maal Brengain rolls her eyes. "Well, we don' 'ave ta e'en leave th' Foot if'n ye don' wanna. We could jus' walk down ta th' other end... But if ye really need ta ask yer Da'..."

She looks down at the young man before her and realizes how much he reminds her of her younger brother, Riordin. They must be aboot th' same age, too, she reflects. Wha' am I gettin' meself into? she asks herself. Wha' if this somehow ends in disaster like before!? Poor Riordin!

Maal Brengain steps back, visibly shaken for a moment. The indecision shows clearly in her face and her dark eyes...

Normally it would do just fine. But," and Kyle looks to the ground,"My dad wants me close to town 'to avoid any more trouble' he says. But I'll be with you so that would be like staying out of trouble don't you think? I'd better ask just to make sure. He's pretty mad at me right now and I don't want him to be any more madder. As it is I'm house bound as he puts it. But maybe if you talk to him he'll let me go. I really want to do this! Please, will you come with me when I ask? If your there he might say yes."

Maal Brengain continues to casually chew the venison.

"Aye! Tha' will do, don' ye think?"

Maal Brengain takes a bite of the venison meat, herself, and answers while chewing, "I, um, 'ave no clan. Tha's why I'm 'ere in Thresh'ld..."

After an uncomfortable pause, she continues, "Shall we meet this afternoon? Maybe in th' field north o' th' town?"

"Uh, sure I'd love to have some."

Kyle takes a strip of meat from Maal and bites into it. Some of the juices run down the side of his mouth and he wipes them away on his sleeve.

Chewing and talking Kyle says, "Yeah I can tell you stories of Mercer. My Dad says that people make more out of the stories than actually happened but they're fun to hear anyway."

He takes another bite.

"I know that your obligations might be unpredictable so if we can't train I understand. After all, you're doing this on your own time. I'm grateful just for that...and this meat...this is really tasty!"

He takes another bite.

"I think I'd like to learn the spear. We live sort of in the woods and findign a brach to sharpen should'nt be so hard."

He takes another bite.

"So, you're from the Wildlands, eh? I've never seen someone from there...execpt for Fergus's parents. They talk like you do. Fergus sounds kind of like them but not as much. He said that Wildlander have patterns on their kilts which marks the tribe...or was it clan?...that they're from. He didn't recognize yours though. What clan or tribe are you from?"

"Er... yeh, I'd like ta teach ye how ta use any weap'n ye like... but yeh, it might be easier ta begin with th' spear, since tha's what I have. Um... maybe ye can, um... tell me some of them stories o' - who was it? - Mercer?"

"I should 'ave some time this afternoon if ye like, but let's keep this loose fer now, eh? B'cause o' my duties ta th' Council we may not be able to meet e'ryday. D' ye follow me?

"Um... d' ye want a strip o' meat? It's from - um - Lander's inn right up there..."

Maal Brengain unwraps the venison strips an' holds them out in her left hand towards Kyle.

Kyle's mouth drops open and he's dumbstruck. "You'd teach me to use a spear? an...and fight like a hero? Wow! I've always heard stories about old man Mercer and thought of being him doing what he did. When can we start? I've got some work to do right now but I'll be ready later this afternoon. WOW!"

Maal Brengain is momentarily stunned by Kyle's speech, "I... um... what?"

She quickly composes herself, "What 're ye goin' on about now?" she asks. "A 'hairpiece"? I'm sure I 'ave no idea what yer talkin' aboot, lad. So, ye like Kit, eh? Think she's pretty, eh? Hrm! Well! Indeed!"

"Look, I jus' wan' ta talk with ye aboot th' whole Rawlin' thing. I wanna tell ye tha' I'm proud o' ye. Ye showed real courage! Ye got in a bit over ye head though, but tha's nothin' ta be ashamed of, since it all turned out fer th' best.

"I - um - was jus' gonna say tha' if ye e're need help with tha' sort o' business agin, then ye should come an' find me. I'd like ta help ye out... Er... ye follow? I can show ye how ta handle a weapon if ye like... in case ye need ta defend yerself agin..."

Cindara reaches out and grabs Maal's hand giving it a firm, solid grasp and shake...definatly strong enough for a weapon. "Well, I look forward to having you around. Truth be told, more women should take up the hammer and steel. Well, off I go."

Kyle says, "Maal, before anything I really must thank you for helping us...again. It was stupid for us to go after Rawling...I see that now looking back on it. How's Kit? Is she doing okay? When I talked to her I guess I upset her. I didn't mean to. I didn't expect her to run away from a hairpiece. Do you think she would at least take a walk with me...maybe share a lunch? Oh, I don't know. I just can't stop thinking about her! Have you ever been...well...you know...Alright I'll just say it, I really like her and I don't know how to...She liked the piece I made for her but she said she could never accept it. Do you know why she would say that?" Kyle seemed cunfused and befuddled tripping over his words.

"Indeed, Cindara. I was 'ere jus a few days ago. An' I'll also be workin' at th' anvil with Stormhunter. It's good ta meet ye." Maal Brengain extends her right hand (the left is still holding her food), despite  Cindara's warning. "Sweat an' soot don' bother me none," she adds.

Maal sizes up the girl, trying to judge her potential muscle strength and how "tough" she could be. Would she be able to weild a weapon? wonders the Wildlander woman.

She then turns her attention to Kyle. "I'd like ta speak with ye, Kyle..."

Kyle quickly turns to see Maal approaching. "Oh, Maal! Hello. This is my cousin Cindara. She's learning how to smith with Stormhunter." he says, turning to Cindara he says, "This is Maal. She helped save me, William, and Fergus from the ratman." Cindara smiles, "Thanks for helping my mischievous cousin. If it isn't one thing it's another with him.

Cindara looks to be older than Kyle, closer to Maal's age. She has her black hair tied back and is sweating on the brow. She laughs, "I'd extend my hand for a peaceful shake but they're covered with sweat and soot! Stormhunter has been making me work extra hard at the anvil. He says that I show real promise and, like the metal, I should work my talent into shape!" Cindara looks at Maal, "Didn't I see you here just a few days ago? Listen to me! I've been so busy at the fire that I don't know what goes on beyond the smithy! By the end of the day I'm so tired from swinging that hammer that I just collpse into bed...sometimes without supper."

Without changing either her gait or manner, Maal Brengain strides purposefully towards Kyle and his companion...

"Hail, Kyle," she says in greeting as she approaches.

As she gets outside she sees Kyle turn to the right and head towards the various smithies. Mall dadges her way through the crowd and over the Wolfsong. She sees Kyle standing there talking to a young girl in a leather apron and soot on her face.

"Ah! Thank ye!" Maal Brengain takes the wrapped-up food from Lander and quickly hands him a gold coin.

"Tha's th' smallest I 'ave," she states as she moves towards the door. And then calls out, "Keep th' change!" as she quickly exits the inn.

She will attempt to follow Kyle across the Wolfsong, hoping to catch up to him on the other side. She will weave through the crowds as necessary, walking briskly with her long strides, but not running.

Lander calls back, "Okay, I'm wrapping them up now...and the meal is 3 copper of any local minting." What seems almost instantly Lander comes from the kitchen with a roll of paper sporting what appears to be wet spots.

Maal continues to look out the window following Kyle's path. He turns to his left towards the Wolfsong Bridge.

Maal Brengain stands up very slowly and calmly, and begins fishing through her shoulder bag for some coins. "Lander!" she calls out towards the kitchen. "Can ye wrap those up fer me to take along? An' how much do I owe ye?" She reaches down and takes a good long pull from her still mostly full mug of ale.

"You got it Maal Brengain! I'll give you the strip...ah, I mean get you the strips" lander flys off to the kitchen.

Looking through the window Maal notices that like other panes of glass this one is kind of wavy and distorts the view beyond. She moves her head back and forth slightly making a game out of her blocked view. Seeing the women turn fat and then skinny offers her some enjoyment while she waits.

The women end their conversation and move along. Just as they walk out of the window view Maal sees Kyle exit the Leather shop and walk towards the Cliffside end of The Foot.

Maal Brengain sits herself down in the window seat and gazes through the window toward the leather shop until the view is suddenly blocked.

"Don' call me 'miss'. I am known as Maal Brengain," she replies as Lander returns with the ale. "I'll try some o' those venison strips tha' ye mentioned if'n ye don' mind..."

"Ah yes, ale and food. Any 'tickler kind of food? Oh, did I say say tickler? I meant particular...sorry. Perhaps some beer soaked venison strips? There's a seat right there..." Lander motions his hand to a window seat looking up the stretch of The Foot. It's perfect for watching the Leather shop. Lander continues on talking, "...that you can make yourself comfortable in so please, relax and enjoy yourself. I'll be back with your ale."

Many people walk by the window on their own business and pleasure. Quickly a group of women stop right in front of the window blocking any sort of view to the rest of the river island. They laugh and carry on talking about everyday things. Meanwhile Lander returns with a frothy mug of amber delight. "Well miss...ah...miss...hmm, what's your name?"

Maal Brengain glares down at the excitable little man before her.

"I'm only 'ere ta quench me thirst an' maybe 'ave a small bite ta eat. Tha' is all fer now."

She then scans the front of the room to see if there is a window looking out across the road towards Philip Stagdrake's shop. If so, she plans to station herself by that window and diligently watch for Kyle to appear...

Maal enters the Inn and sees that it is moderately full the noise level is low with the exception of one...A gnome by the name of Lander Leofric. Immediately Lander comes up to Maal. He's dressed in bright clothes and has sideburns that extend down to his chest. He has a head of brown hair bunched into a topknot. and seems eager to talk, "Well, Hello my beautiful maiden! Welcome to the Cliffside. We have all sorts of sleeping arrangements, foods, drinks, and entertainments. Whatcha be lookin' for? We got some nice venison spears, a variety of dried vegetables...it's not yet the season for the fresh ones y'know, we have soft beds that you can snuggle up in and have a descent slumber, we have ales that range from morning to night, we have some tasty sweet pies...oooo they're good too, there's all sorts of games like dice and Kings (chess) and Jumping Gems (alkerque- I'll show you sometime if you're interested) and..." Lander draws a deep breath and says, "I've gotta learn to breath when I'm talking!"
