Title: The Weary Road Home

OOC: Is there anything (besides underground exploration) that you guys wanted to do before leaving The Ruins of Rivercliff Keep (that's the official name of the fort)?

Dale shakes his head in frustration and strides purposefully towards the keep.    As he gets to the keep, rather than heading inside, he climbs the stairs to the top of the keep.

Once upon the top of the fortress, he heads to a battlement that faces upstream.   From there, he kneels beneath the battlement to keep watch for reinforcements of dark cloaks.

As he waits there he reviews the exchange between himself and Jarmok in his mind, over and over again.   Feeling badly about offending Maal, Dale begins to think of how to apologize to her, not that it will matter at this point.

While keeping watch on the forest, Dale pulls out Xorn and feeds the toad while petting it.   "What would you have done?"  Dale looks at the toad forlornly hoping for an answer from his former master.

The three councilers look at each other nodding their heads in agreement. Svenia hands Rainfire and Avalon two longswords that she aquired while getting herself a dagger. "Sayer, there are plenty of weapons in case you want one." Svenia says.

Rainfire asks, "Who else is coming with us to wait?"

Quote from: darkred:6d9135d09aIf Sayer makes eye contact with Maal, he will say this to her, otherwise he will turn away and speak these words over his shoulder as he walks to the exit:[/color] "We will wait in the treeline until the sun is at six hands in height [noonish?]. At that time, the counsellors and I shall make our way to Threshold.  That should give us just enough daylight to return to town."

Sayer adds matter-of-factly "if you do not join us by this time, we shall not come back to look for you.  Remember my earlier words of counsel.  Good luck."

Rainfire and Svenia quietly watch the standoff between Maal and Dale.

Maal Brengain stands tall and proud, glaring at Dale. She is aware that Jarmok and Kit have entered the keep, but she stands fast in her confrontation with Dale, gauging that she can catch up to them if need be...

As Jarmok and Kit enter the keep, Sayer turns to the council members.  His expression is serious, but there is still charm in his voice. "Ladies, please follow me."

Kit turned to see Jarmok duck in the keep, despite the pain in her back she hustled towards and through the entry, after him.

OOC: I know, I know....this is an OCD in an ICD...However, I want to remind everyone to separate player feelings from character feelings.

If anyone has something to say to another PLAYER do it in a private message or an email. Resolve your personal differences there.

But most important...have fun.

Sayer stood by, watching the confrontation.  His casting was becoming realized: Rely on your wits/but not on each other.  The two weak moon runes within that reading had concerned him, for he knew that social conflict within this group would surface.  He was now seeing it happen.

Sayer was more concerned with the two weak earth runes: there would be more conflict, but of a physical nature.  Although he was encouraged by two strong sun runes -- a goal achieved -- he was not optimistic that this quest would have the conclusion that the others expected.  They would find their priests, but perhaps not in a condition that they had hoped to find them.

He thought about the first casting.  Five strong suns.  Sayer smiled to himself.  This group would achieve its goal...assuming that they could agree on one goal to acheive.

The first rune reading was: earth SUN SUN SUN SUN SUN.  The second rune reading was: earth moon SUN moon earth SUN.

Kit looked back at Dale with a sudden note of concern on her young face. Her face flushed with embarassment. Dale surmised she hadn't been thinking the whole thing through or even listening up to this point. She only wanted to save her friend.

With a soft voice she spoke while staring at the ground at her feet. "Jarmok's plan gets me in the underground immediately, yours keeps me up here debating the what ifs."

It was clear to Dale that she didn't want to challenge him. She was like a child asking her parents permission, but with full intention of doing what she wants regardless of the answer.

Dale looks at the young girl with sympathy in his eyes.  "I'm not suggesting that you abandon her.   I am suggesting that you make a wise plan before walking into a potential slaughter house.     Just walking in leaving half of us here is madness.   Besides, Jarmok said he was going to run away the moment he ran into any trouble.   How does that help you save your friend?

Kit gasped in astonishment.

She got up yet again, grimacing and still holding her back as she did so.

"I am good enough to finish the job Dale." she said stern quiet voice. Although her voice spoke in a harsh whisper, her eyes gaze pleaded with Dale in an obvious attempt for him to concede to Jarmok.

With effort, and while biting her lip in obvious pain, she loaded her light crossbow and started to walk over to Jarmok.

"No one gave him the right, but he and I have both made up our minds." She stopped and turned to look back at Dale. "I can't abandon Amethia down there," she said, her eyes filling up with tears.

I personally like the dynamic of the opposing opinions (Jarmok & Blackspear), but encourage both players to take any and all personal emotion away from the situation. Its okay for characters to disagree and even come to blows once in awhile, but please agree to diagree about the situation in OOC. Personally, I could care less if Kit goes into the underground or not.

Dale takes his crossbow and fires a bolt into the door of the keep.

Once he has Jarmok's attention, he looks at him and says in a very quiet subdued, yet cold tone, "Who made you king?   You don't care what anyone else has to say?   You're gonna take Kit underground when she can't even stand?   What are you thinking?!!!!   Who's going to rescue your sorry hide when you get overwhelmed down there?  Stop being an ignorant jackass Jarmok!

"We won this battle," Dale sweeps his hand around the courtyard of the fort, "by making a plan and working together.   You're being an impatient little brat and your plan has some serious flaws in it.    You say I'm bloodthirsty?   You're the one charging back into to battle!   Besides,    who gave you the right to order us what to do?"

When I wrote this I hadn't yet read the OOC where everyone agreed to Jarmok's plan.    Dale is amazed at how stupid Jarmok is and I as a player was taken compleeeetely by surprise by his actions.  Dale also feels personally affronted by Jarmok and he doesn't know what he did to irritate him so much.     Personally I wasn't thrilled with Johan forcing everyone else's hand (remember I had not read the last few posts of the Lets Work Together OOC)

I am not upset with Johan in any way.   I won't edit this post for now, because I do think it makes for good roleplaying.   If it turns out to be too controversial maybe I'll change it later.   Sorry for the huge OOC in the middle of the ICD.

Sayer recommends taking some form of cover, either within the walls of the fortress (in one of teh rooms?) or outside of the ruins within the treeline (perhaps at the location north of the keep from where Kit and Sayer approached).

Waiting in the open courtyard is foolhardy.

The three councilers look about in slight confusion. Rainfire says, "So, should we stay here and wait for you?"

Avalon says to her, "Well we don't know how safe the road is. For us to travel back on our own is foolish."

Svenia says to Jarmok, "If you need my help then give me a blade and I'll go in there with you!"

Rainfire says to Svenia, "Are you daft? You've never swung a sword in your life! You'll be killed!"

Svenia looks up to her and says, "Well, you didn't know me in my younger days...did you?" She turns to the rest of the Protecterate and asks, "Now, where's my blade?"

We're going to have to do this in-session, I'm afraid, because at this point...

Jarmok turned abruptly from the argument, and strode towards the ruins. "Ragnor, Sayer, watch councilor and en'my. Make big noise if see en'my. Kit, Laren, Maal, I go in, you come? Dale, do what will."

Kit sat on her knees with her feet folded underneath her, watching the the two men. Her face flushed at the awkward moment. Astonished that the argument esculated to this, she brought her hand (from the pain in her back) to her mouth as the tension became thick.

She looked back and forth at each of them, wondering what Jarmok would say next.

She looked over at Laren who was busy mumbling to himself and spending way to much time inspecting the bodies. 'If only he would hand over the two remaining healing potions, we would all feel so much better about going down there,' she thought.

Then a sudden thought came to her. 'He's ignoring me. Oh Paladine No! Did he figure it out? Does he hate me now?'

After watching and listening silently for some time, Maal Brengain snorts scornfully and, as Jarmok speaks, she moves a few steps over to the rubble pile at the base of the battlements. Folding her lean form, she sits upon one of the larger boulders. Then, leaning forward with her spear in hand, she looks over the whole the group, shaking her head in dismay...

Dale glares back at Jarmok, not relenting.    After a moment of intense tension, Dale takes a deep breath as if to check his temper.   "Jarmok....  Relax...    We're in this together.     You make some good points.   But understand this:  If we don't go into the fort together, you could die too. If we hunt, we hunt together or we die.   If we rescue, we rescue together or we die.   Whether "Vishcook" is down in the fort or in the river he is still out there.   He will come after us and it will take all of us to kill him!

"For your information I'm not blood thirsty.  I'm simply reluctant to leave an enemy at my back.   I misunderstood you earlier.  You didn't speak very clearly.    Its sometimes hard to understand what you are telling us."

Edited: Johan and I posted at the same time earlier.  Johan's post would have dictated a different response than what Dale gave earlier.

"No!" Jarmok almost screamed, his frustration and ire rising tangibly. "Is bad idea!"

He took a deep breath and calmed himself with effort. "Is not more hunt. Is rescue now." He said. "'vish-kook not inside. Not out of river. I see this [points two fingers at his own eyes]. Cave 'neath only come to there [points to the short bastion yet standing upon the cliff's edge, overlooking the river far below]."

The lean hunter held up one long finger. "Can't leave Councilors alone." Two long fingers: "Path to Threshold not safe, need leave able escorts [casts his other hand across Sayer, Dale, and Ragnor] if not return with priestes."

Three long fingers. "Need get in quiet, quick, get out. [casts his hand over Maal, Kit, Laren, and himself]. First need is pr'tekt Threshold. Sek'nd: pr'tekt councilors. Third: find, get, and pr'tekt priestes. No longer time for kill. If on path after dark, all [waves both hands around the assembled people, councilors as well as Protectorate] dead. No warning Threshold. No saving councilors. No preistes. No Dale, Maal, Say'r...no no one."

The normally quite and withdrawn outlander glared hard at Dale. "Blood thirst get all killed. Then what? Threshold not know what happens. Maal, Kit, Laren, me go in. If find preistes, is vik-t'ry. If find en-my, we run. Fast."

"Is not more hunt. Is rescue." He reiterated adamantly.

Kit looked over at Laren again, who was checking out the bodies and mumbling to himself.

"If I had a swallow of one of Laren's healing potions I should be good to go," she said.

"My reasoning is that it will take all of us to bring that monstrosity down.   If we all go in together, we can be bottled up and killed off one at a time.  Meanwhile we will only be able to bring one or two of us to fight Vervishkuk at once.   If we attack him from two sides we can catch him in a deadly cross fire and all of us can get in on the kill.

"There is a great risk to my plan.  By dividing, we can be isolated and attacked.   Thereby making it easier for Vervishkuk and his compatriots to kill us.  Its a risk.   But I think we're in big trouble if we all go in together.   Do you have any better ideas?"  Dale looks at the young girl and waits patiently for a reply.

"If we are all in and only if we are all in on this, I suggest we split our forces again.   Kit, Laren and Ragnor should go to the cave and enter the fort that way.    You will also be able to prevent Vervishkuk from running out the back door.   Jarmok, Maal, and myself will enter the fort from that door over there.   We will be able to attack from two sides at once if we are lucky.

"If possible, we should try to coordinate our attacks.   If Jarmok, Maal and I start the battle, the three of you can fire your bows at the big bastard from a distance.   If you wait hidden at the edge of  the cave, you will hear the battle and the can rush in to join us.  Hopefully, we can take him by surprise again.  The only variable is the dark priest and any other lackeys that they might be hiding.

"Sayer, you can guard the councillors and keep them safe.  If you see any more troops coming, you can warn us and escort the councillors to Threshold.   If we get captured, get back to Threshold and get us a rescue.   Ashe and Julius would know what to do.

"Does anyone have any questions or better ideas?"   Dale looks at each member of the group, even the councillors.

With her eyes still closed, Kit shook her head. She took a slow controlled intake of breath and opened her eyes. She said, "an injury from a few days ago. I thought it was nothing at the time, but the battle must of aggravated it."

She looked over at Laren. "A simple fall off a horse. Let me just get my breath, it doesn't seem to be getting worse."

As she leaned forward in an attempt to stretch her back, her bare back became fully exposed. In between the bottom of her leather tunic and the top of her skirt was a ovate reddish bruise, approximately 4 inches wide and 2 inches tall.

Kit sat up, and with a lot of obvious effort stood up.

"I am okay, what's the plan?"

Svenia continues, "From what I gathered, Amethia was just new to the priest hood."

"I have some more questions for the councillors." Dale looks specifically to Svenia and asks, "Did you know these priests?   Were they experienced leaders of their churches?   They were wearing armor, expecting battle.  Did they fall easily or were they overwhelmed?   Did the dark priest use his powers on them?  What did this dark priest look like.  Did he have a name?"

The teary eyed Kit, watched in earnest, as the council women talked to one another. Jarmok had stood beside her, where she sat on the ground with her calves and legs folded beneath her. She reached out and held Jarmok's hand. Upon his quick glance down she gave him a half-hearted smile. One meant to be brave through the obvious despair shown on her young face.

Avalon says, "Yes! Yes it was! What's the date today?" She looks about for an answer.

Rainfire adds, "We were in the cell for two days I think." She looks at Svenia and says, "Sorry Svenia. I just want none of this to have happened."

Avalon says, "Yes. Aside from what Rainfire and I added that's everything. Oh, during our travels I heard whispering but couldn't understand any of it since the talk was too quiet."

Rainfire speaks up and says, " We were told that there had been sightings of strange riders in the hills east of the road so the priests wore some armor in case we were attacked." Rainfire added a plea, "Can we get back to town now? We have to speak with Julius and tell him of the recent events. We are, after all, on the council."

Svenia sends a death stare at Rainfire and says, "Rainfire! We told them that! Don't you think they know what they're doing? We're facing some tough decisions here and you're not making it any easier! Instead of whining for your comfy bed why don't you help solve the problems as opposed to adding to them!?"

Avalon smirks.

Jarmok listened intently to Svenia talk, and as the others concurred. This was not adding up properly for the lean outlander.

When Svenia finished, Jarmok nodded, but pushed a little forward. "Is bad image." He explained, waving his spidery hand in front of his face. "Travel to Threshold with three [long fingers again] humans priestes *and* Kurian guardses. Night, maybe four [thumb over shoulder] back, attacked, guardses killed, you and priestes taken, blindedfold, bringed here, you [pointing to all three] in prizen, priests left out? Is all remembered?"

Jarmok cocked his head to one side thinking. "Preistes have metal armor? Were here in metal armor?" He asked.

Svenia looked up at the outrider and her head cocked back in surprise at seeing Jarmok. She noticed the bronzewood axe that Jarmok possessed and becam more at ease. She then says "Ah...yes there were three human priests with us. Two women and one man. They were dressed in priestly fashion with armor and robes with holy symbols. We were attacked on the road by some riders on large wolves. During the attack we were knocked out. Later when we woke we were blindfolded until we came to these ruins. The priests were an awful mess as they had been badly beaten. Once we came into the compound we were separated from the priests and the three of us were thrown into the cell and locked up."

Rainfire and Avalon nodded in agreement. Avalon says, "The wolves were an unusual type. They were very large and had horns like a mountain ram. We were attacked at night and we suddenly couldn't see anything at all. We weren't alone though...we were being escorted by Kurrian guards. I could hear the sounds of battle and them getting slaughtered...well, until I was knocked out."

Rainfire says, "We all heard the confusion and just couldn't make any sense of it at all."

"Ung." Jarmok interjected loudly. "Wait. Need more look." He stepped forward timidly, crouching in front of and addressing Svenia, "Missing three [three long fingers held up] priests? Is human? How look like? How many men bringed here you?" He asked the little woman.

Kit shook with emotion. "But I can't leave her here, if she dies Kayle will never forgive me!"

She shot a look towards Laren. "Laren has two more healing potions, and I still have some energy left. We can do this! That thing is already injured, it had to flee from us didn't it? And there can't be that many more cronies after all, they would have surfaced by now right?"

Kit started to look desperate as she made her case from her kneeling position on the ground.

(OOC, Kit is not aware that Laren gave the potions to the councilor.)

As if noticing Kits tears for the first time, Dale looks to the young girl and puts a hand on her shoulder.   "We will lass.   Just not today.  We need everyone together to fight this evil.   You are exhausted and nearly spent.  Lets go back to Threshold and try again tomorrow."

Kit gasped and let out a small cry.

"Paladine keeps testing me." She started to look about the ground as if trying to find something. "Why does he keep testing me?"

She put her hands over face and dropped to her knees, after a moment of muffling her anguish she took one hand away, leaving the other over her mouth.

Svenia asked "How..."

Before she could finish, Kit stated matter of factly. "I have to go down there."

"Sayer, you aren't equipped for battle.  No armor, no training, not even a weapon.   Throwing yourself into battle like that showed more courage than the rest of us combined.   You did well."

Dale takes the 4 money pouches and puts them in his pack.  Looking at Jarmok and Mall, Dale asks "Should we gather up their weapons and armor to destroy them, so that they can't be used again?   They are so far from Xan Thakos that they must be worth a lot to them.   If we had a pack mule we could take the stuff back to Threshold and arm a militia."

Kit had been making repeated glances at Svenia for many moments while the others talked and planned. She bit her lower lip and shuffled her feet in what was apparent nervousness. All too familiar tears were welling up in her eyes.

With an abrupt interruption she asked Svenia, ?Amethia?.

A tear escaped and gravity soon took it.

"...Kayle Trechant?s daughter from Aldebaron?? Her voice was quiet, constricted with emotion.

Sayer glances at the purses, yet makes no motion to accept them.  "Perhaps the task of managing the spoils of the field is better suited for hands other than mine," he says.

"If we're not in agreement, about exploring the fort, we should go back."

Dale looks carefully at Ragnor.   "We won't be picking a fight with Severen... yet.   I'm not convinced that he has anything to do we these so called "blasphemers".   Maal is right. We should follow his activities first.   Your actions are the very actions that you despise about the Xan Thakians.   Kill now, ask questions later, is a bad way to live.   Trust me I've been there.  I want to hang Severen as much as you do, but not until he does something wrong first.

Lets pick over the bodies and then lets get out of here."   Dale strides towards the nearest corpse and grabs his belt pouch.   Then he moves to the next corpse ad combines the contents of his pouch with the first one.   He does this until no pouches are left.   He then hands the money to Sayer and says, "You did well today.  I've never seen a braver act than what you did today.    Since you're a scholar, why don't you tally this money up and dole it out equally when we get back to town."

As Jarmok was investigating the surrounding ruins Svenia says, "No. the three of us were brought here along with the priests and as soon as we entered here we were separated. Before we were imprisoned I saw the dark priest come down those stairs there (Svenia points to the stairs that lead up to the ramparts) and begin to look over the priests. We were being shackled and I heard screams of pain come from the courtyard. I can only assume that it was the our priest friends who were screaming. I don't know where the dark one is. He could be underground but i can't say with any certainty."

Rainfire and Avalon both put their hands on Svenias' shoulders to help the little gnome through her explaination. Both nodded their assurance that what she said was complete and correct.

Avalon says, "Svenia! Come to your senses! I know that you and Amethia became close in you journyes here. But do you think that I don't mourn Aiden? Do you think Rainfire doesn't care about Althea? We do! Would they expect us to put ourselves at risk when they know that our people need us? Of course not. The right thing to do is get home...as soon as possible."

Svenia retorts, "Maybe you think it would be better to leave. But if they're alive we should help them. If they're down there alive they won't be for long. Who knows when that dark priest will be back. When he does come back that'll be their end. Can you live with that? Knowing that you could have saved them? You'll always wonder..."

Rainfire speaks up and says, "I agree. We should go back to the town. It's unfortunate that the preists aren't yet found but it wouldn't do us any good to stay here and get killed ourselves."

Svenia casts amean look at her and growls, "And suppose it was you down there you spoiled tart! Wouldn't you want someone to come after you?"

Avalon puts her hand on Svenia's shoulder and says softly, "Svenia, please. Rainfire is right we should go back to Threshold as soon as possible. I want nothing more than to find out if the priests are dead but right now with the calamity that has fallen, our place, our oath, is to Threshold."

Tears start flow from Svenias eyes and with a shaking voice she says, "Bu...but Amethia was so hopeful to...help. I can't abandon hope or help to someone who would help us. She didn't come all the way from Aldebaron to die!" Svenia's resolve strengthenes from her tears and she turns to the rest of the Protectorate and says, "If I can help you in any way find the priests I will...even if it means taking a sword and going down with you! But if you decide to go back to town I'll trust your judgement in doing that."

Sayer crouches and casts his stones, pondering over them for several moments.

[The stones read: earth SUN SUN SUN SUN SUN; 5 boon and 1 bane; the inverted earth stone is closest to Sayer, and the other five stones form a circle]

"I would advise returning the councel members to town.  Although Dale's suggestion has merit," Sayer points to the inverted earth stone, "there will be a payment for such an attempt."

Sayer rises from his crouching position, looking at the faces of the group.

OOC: This is in answer to Dale's questions

Svenia unstoppers the waterskin and greedily drinks from it. She motions to the other two council members to come over. "Mmm...Julius mention he would hire some people to take the place of the Kurrian guards. So you guys are it, eh? Well, glad to meet you" The other women walk over and Svenia introduces them, "This is Avalon Sythuswind (1/2 elf) and this is Rainfire (elf)." Svenia puts her little hand on the side of her mouth to block the view from Rainfire and says, "She does have an elf name but she's a little touchy about people mispronouncing it."

Rainfire sounds up and says, "Well how would you like having people always saying your name wrong? Honestly...everyone thinks it's such a big deal using my human equivalent as if they aren't good enou..."

Svenia interrupts and says, "Anyway, It was hard to tell if the priest had any acolytes with him. All the soldiers were dressed the same. It was hard to tell them apart. Besides we only caught a glimpse of them before we were locked up"

Svenia asks, "Have you found any of the priests?"

Avalon says, "I told you the priests are probably dead. What would make you think they haven't been sacrificed in some way? The dark priest had too keen an interest in them to let them live. After all, a priest of Takhisis would like nothing better than use them in some dark ritual. They're all murderers the lot of them!"

Svenia looks up at Avalon and quips, "Well there's no harm in hoping is there?"

Rainfire asks, "Do you know if the other council members made it back?"

Maal Brengain looks shrewdly at Ragnar and then responds thougthfully, "Well, methinks that if'n Severen is a mole, he'll jus' as likely lie aboot it anyways... We would need some proof o' tha.  Yet, we we may not 'ave to ask 'im aboot it at all... There be better ways ta check up on someone.  If'n we don' find 'im down there today," she indicates the open doorway with her spear, "we can always secretly track 'is movements in an' outta th' town, waitin' fer 'im ta make a mistake an' give 'imself away."

The Wildlander then turns to face Jarmok, "Jarmok, are ye able to scout around the area?  How badly are ye wounded?"

"Well met Svenia.  I'm Dale and we're a newly formed protectorate of Threshold.  Julius formed our group and with his blessing we have come here to attack these Xan Thakian troops and try to find you.   You are welcome to as much water as you like.   Would you like some food too?"  Dale quickly unties the leather cord that binds his water skin to his belt and hands the water to the halfling.   Dale then continues speaking by introducing the rest of the protectorate to Svania.

Once the introductions are over Dale asks "Were there many soldiers or apprentices with the dark priest?"

The gnome that was a prisoner approaches and says, "Hello, I'm Svenia Goodwink. I'm one of the council memebers of Threshold. We all thank you for helping us get out of that dirty prison. I must warn you that the three priests that we were brought here with were taken into the depths. I do not know their fate. There was a priest of Paladine, Istisha, and Sardior." She wipes some grime from her cheeks and continues, "We were captured on the road between Xuad'Tarn and Threshold I think four days ago...it's so hard to keep track of time in the dark. Anyway, before we were put in the cell we saw what I think was a dark priest judging by his interest in the other three priests and his fashions." Her voice gets dry and raspy and she says, "I can not say for certain if the three priest are still here but when I last saw then they were being taken to the other door. Do any of you have some water that I can drink?"

Kit's entire leather ensemble, from the tip of her boots (just under the hem of long skirt) to the top of her head was covered dots of blood. An arrow wound in her arm was still bleeding profusely, as she had not yet tended to it.

"What of the prisoners? We cannot ask them to go into the depths." she asked.

Dale nods in respect to the wildlander.   "Aye Maal. I knew you'd be willin to go.   I'm not afraid of death either.  I think we can get at him if we go down into the keep.   He's too big to fit through human size halls and we can bottle him up.   He won't be able to use his tail if we face him in a human size area.   If we keep our distance, we can just fire arrow after arrow into him.   If we let this guy go we will regret it later."

Maal Brengain leans down and gathers up her dropped weapons. She picks up her blood covered, antler-tipped Wildlander spear, and slowly and painfully straightens up proudly to her full height.  Thanks to Kit's healing potion, the Wildlander's two deep shoulder spear wounds have closed up and healed over on the surface, leaving a pair of fresh scars.  Yet she is covered almost head to toe in fresh blood - mostly her own - and her hair is matted with sweat and blood.  She still has several smaller non lethal wounds that continue to ooze blood.

With chin held high she responds to Dale, "Aye, Dale, I would follow ye inta th' bowels o' this acursed place ta' face tha' beast-man agin', but only if'n we're all in agreement an' can pursue him together as a force."  Maal's black eyes narrow and she meets Dale's glare with her own as she continues, "Ye mus' unnerstan', Dale, if'n he is indeed in there, he 'as retreated inta his lair... it is where he is most dangerous!  Any hunter knows the risk o' attackin' a cornered beast in it's lair.  Are ye truly willin' ta take tha' risk?  Are ye ready ta die!?  If'n we go in, there may be no escape for any of us.  I, meself am no' afraid o' dyin'." Then, with a final sneer of defiance, she adds, "In fact, I welcome death!"

Dale addresses the assembled party.  "Listen everyone, I think Vervishcook went into the fortress.   He jumped off of the cliff, but there is a small beach below the cliff.    He probably went into a riverside entrance to the fortress.    The river is too strong and often too shallow for him to swim.   And I know he didn't simply vanish.   I think we should get in there and try to finish him off.   He was looking pretty hagard and that's why he ran away.   HE WAS SERIOUSLY WOUNDED!!!   AND HE WAS AFRAID OF US!!!

Looking at Ragnor,  then Kit and Sayer, finally settling on Jarmok and  Maal, Dale continues,    "I know we're banged up, but I think we should attack him now while we have him injured.  If we let him get away, he will just come back here with more men and they will shore up the defenses of this place.  We'll never succeed then.   We need to kill him now and try to destroy this fortess as best we can!!   Maybe we can light fires inside it so that they at least can't live inside of it."

"The prisoner back in Threshold told us to expect twenty men including Vervishcook.   WE KILLED TWENTY MEN!!  If Vervishcook had more soldiers here, they would be attacking us right now!   There is no one else to help him."

Dale looks every person in the eye.   He stares particularly hard at Jarmok and Maal.  "I know you two are hurt really bad, but we need to strike now when he's weak.   Don't let this bastard escape and come back with more men.   WE CAN DO THIS!!!!"   Dale voice gets very gravelly as he yells and he gives a very animated pump of his fist to emphasize his words.    "ARE YOU GUYS WITH ME?!!!

Dale stares particularly at Maal, challenging her not to back away from a fight.
