Harrison woke to the thunderous wagons, and forced the scowl from his face. He replaced it with a look of indifference that felt as forced as would a smile.

He hated that they were all forced to participate in things like the games. Everything that was overseen by the adults just made him angry. More fuel for the fire that he'd one day light.

For now, he forced it all from his mind and dressed with the cool facade that masked his contempt.

In catching up, I noticed that Light's hope chapel happened before folks woke to the game...

I did not participate in the waking to the game threads, but I'm curious as to what's going on with Harrison in January of 2133, when he's at the chapel at the end of December 2132...

does he no longer live at the Chapel at this point in time, did he move back to the orphanage? Or was he collected at the chapel for the games?

Laren slowly rocked and swayed in his chair the way Oscar did, mumbling softly about the rolling waves beneath the hull of his fishing boat.

Beneath his facade of incoherent memories of lost times, Laren's mental gears cranked excitedly. Judging by the relative youth of the lads, they were likely Duskshrouds; a small time gang of opportune riff-raff always looking to gain the respect and credibility of the other establishments of Kurr.

If that were the case though, Laren didn't believe they were there looking for him. Surely they were up to no good, but no one who knew the importance of the Eye would trust a Duskshroud to the task. Then again, it was possible that Crimson really had no idea of the Eye's importance to begin with. Laren filed the thought away for consideration in the evening.

Winnie returned with a bowl of oatmeal and a mug of steaming coffee. Laren breathed a sigh of disappointment even as he thanked her noisily. He'd forgotten Oscar's customary morning meal. How Laren hated oatmeal. He grew unreasonably sick of it while traveling, but it's convenience while on the road was undeniable.

"My thanks, mistress o' the pint!" Laren said loudly, tossing a wink to Winnie, a hand on her arm. "And uh," he added quietly, gently tugging her closer. "My apologies for the stench... I'd like to send a round of Hawkberry brandy to our shrouded friends in the loft. Put it on my tab, but tell them it's on the house?"

Laren wondered if in her chaotic duties, she'd spied the lads for what they were. No doubt she had.

The Hawkberry brandy was the calling card for the Brotherhood of the Hawk. This gesture was known in Kurr as the "Showing of the hand" a analogy not only in reference to gambling, but to the ring on the fingers of the brothers.

It was a warning to outsiders. It said they were welcome to stay as long as they kept the Hawk's peace. Laren liked to think of it as explaining the house rules, and affording the players an opportunity to leave before the deal.

He wondered excitedly how they'd react.

I'm trying to catch up on... really quite a lot here... My problem is that there's a LOT, and I'm rather distracted at home, even when the kids are in bed.

What would be helpful is if someone who IS up to date and I could get together, either in person or on the phone, and discuss what's happened in sort of an abridged manner. I LOVE all the flavor text, but I just need to know what's happened in a need-to-know fashion before pressing on with most of this campaign... Right now, I don't know what I don't know, but I know that what I don't know is a lot.

Harrison thought back to that night and remembered the face of the wolf he saw trailing after the wagon. Harrison never truly believed his mother fought wolves at all, but he wondered what Michael thought had happened.

"Well," he said, trying hard to sound like he thought his mother was in fact dead. "I never really believed there were any wolves, so whatever it was, it was something that didn't alarm the dogs. Perhaps even Jonah himself."

Harrison studied Michael intently to see how the thought impacted him, looking for signs that might suggest whether Michael believed Harrison's mother was dead. He hoped Michael did, so that at least something could remain private.

"What do you think, Michael? You obviously believe something already that you're trying very hard to lead me to. Just say it, you're not going to hurt me. Anything you believe I've probably already been through or imagined worse anyway." It was difficult to keep the irritation out of his tone, but he was sick of unspoken thoughts.

Harrison was becoming more confused, and thus frustrated by the line of questioning. What'd this have to do with where they were or what they were looking for?

"I had a dog of my own, and we had four or five guard dogs. They were old, but they kept the wolves away."

Harrison thought about the wolf he saw the night he was taken to the orphanage. He could feel his nerves beginning to fray under the weight of the events of the day. He forced it from his mind and thought about Emma.

I was just noticing that too... I'll work on that this weekend, see what I can do to fix it... Oddly though, it looks fine in the previews.

"Well," Harrison said, thinking back. "Sure, there were lots of wild dogs around, but they were never a problem. We farmed mostly produce, not livestock. We had a few cows, and a goat or three, but it was mostly corn and turnips that we grew."

Harrison honestly didn't know what Michael was getting at.

Harrison frowned. What'd he know about what makes a farm "successful"?

"I don't know," he said with a shrug. My father wasn't there very often, and what farming could a five year old and his mother take care of alone? Perhaps before he left, it may have been."

"Mother seemed to have a bit of a green thumb," he added, hinting at her gift. Harrison wonder just how much Michael did know.

OOC: I don't recall if Harrison talked to Emma about his mother performing magic. I *think* he did not... did he?

Harrison scowled. Was there anything this kid hadn't heard?

"Yeah," he said dryly. "Sorry you had to go through that."

By the way, does Laren know Burldak?

Laren found himself a little annoyed. They guy's name is Oscar, for crying out loud. I wonder if anyone's ever asked him if it bothers him being called "Oddball"? People are jerks.

"Aye, yes, wouldn't want to turn any stomachs around here." he said sourly. This disguise was going to be more demoralizing than he'd realized.

"Crime boss," Harrison repeated aloud. Again, he sighed at the seemingly insurmountable mountain of odds that were against him. With a curt shake of his head and a roll of his eyes, he decided it didn't really matter. If he lost, he'd die, end of story. If he won... well, then he'd win.

He wished this lady would hurry, the place was giving him the willies!

I changed the way posting looks, enabling the WYSIWYG ("What You See Is What You Get") type of form, so you can now change the color of text. Let me know if you like it better or worse, or... whatever. I have a post on E107s website to see if they can tell me how to fix it so we don't HAVE to use it. That said, there ARE some decent options within it. Anyway...

Harrison was feeling a little better about himself by the time they'd gotten to the front door. Now? He wasn't sure of anything anymore. This had to be the most disgusting feeling place he'd ever been in.

He began feeling the familiar pangs of depression setting in. He frequently felt so bewildered, and so misguided that he almost didn't want to bother to continue. There just seemed like so much to do, so much to learn, that he wondered if it'd all be worth it in the end.

He felt like that a lot lately, especially today. Right now, he just wanted to go to bed.

"So what's the plan?" he asked, trying to sound interested.

"It's like Riding a Bike"... You mean it's something you're not likely to do anytime soon? ;D

Laren felt a pang of guilt that he hadn't expected. Somehow, the thought that playing the part of a beggar would earn him coin from the people who were fooled by the disguise, had never crossed his little mind. Should he go over and pick up the coin for which he had no need? Surely that kind-hearted guard could use it more than Laren could have.

Sighing, Laren decided that he'd chosen to play the part, and he couldn't break character yet. He shambled over to the coin and picked it up. He decided not to put it in his own pouch that he had buried under the layers of rank clothing, but in a separate pocket instead. Perhaps he could find a poor soul who needed it more than he did. He hoped he'd run into that guard at some point, somewhere that he could return the favor.

It was not long before his wandering brought him back to The Half Pint. Laren had seen Oscar dine here from time to time, and always felt a great swell of pity for the man, as he sat alone in the corner, surrounded by empty chairs. He now felt a swell of guilt realizing those people were now feeling pity for him, when none was really warranted.

Nothing to do for it now, he'd have to figure out how to pay it all forward sometime down the line. He busied his mind trying to figure out how he was expected to eat anything, smelling like he did.

Taking a deep breath and getting back into character, he stepped up to the door, and pushed it open.
