Title: Satyr tracks (Completed)
Post by: Griznuq on February 08, 2008, 01:36:56 PM
Two weeks since leaving the Ironbark forest and Maragarn found the first sign of his people's passing through the area. Of course, he'd known he'd wait about that long at least, since this would be where they were when he left.

The lack of growth in the circles where they'd set their tents told him little in regards to how long they'd been gone, only just that they were in fact, gone.

This realization drove home the fact that this was the first time that Maragarn truely didn't know where his family was.

There on the ground was the skull of a goat, and it was facing north. This skull was too clean and white to have died and decayed. This was here for a reason. Maragarn knew it faced the direction his tribe had gone.

... and beside the goat skull was a human skull. It too faced north.

"Enough with the idle chit chat you two", said Charon as he knelt beside the skulls. "We've got important work ahead of us". Charon picked up the human skull. "Now how did you get out of my satchel this time, Collinsworth?"

Maragarn eyed Charon curiously. He still was not able to place a finger on the oddity of this man but he seemed to have a rather cozy feeling about death.

Maragarn's mind came in to focus. His skills in running the wilds would now be put the test. If he got lost his grandsire would perish. He would be leading this group to where they had to go. This was a position he was outrageously uncomfortable with. He had never led a hunting party in his own tribe and now he had to lead near strangers. This was perhaps a chance to prove the worth of his race. His mind focused tightly.

Maragarn crouched down and faced the exact direction the skull was "looking". He traced a line with his finger across the top of the goat skull and lined it up with a tree beyond to mark a straight line in a northerly direction. Swiftness getting the better of him, he stood up and pointed his spear, "North...my tribe went North. We can stay here and rest the night since it's a proven spot or we can strike further on." Maragarn looked to the others for a sense of approval.

Eswarth was getting used to many of the mannerisms of his companions, but other aspect were still just a little much. He pretended to not notice Charron's affinity for Collinsworth or his fetish for the dead.

Camp here or move forward? Well, it seemed to Eswarth that there was truly little choice.

"We'd best move forward for the few hands of light that we yet have. That much closer to your goals."

He let the suggestion hang in the air. In the final analysis, this decision was Maragrarn's to make; he alone among the new group would be impacted by the final result of this quest.

"I agree with Eswarth," said Charon. "I've already seen more death than I care to since my journey started. It would be nice to actually prevent one. I get few opportunities to do that in my line of work."

Charron's words hung upon Eswarth for a bit longer than one might expect. It was a telling statement, and although Eswarth was aware that he wasn't fully versed in the persons around him, this one sentence was telling to the Centaur.

Even weeks of exposure weren't enough to delve the complete character of a person. This little human was indeed deeper than one might expect after only a fortnight or two.

Eswarth wondered if the others were as introspective regarding each other.

Two days passed, and just as Maragarn was beginning to doubt that he'd made the right descision, the feint smell of smoke whafted through the air, teasing his nose. Could only be a short ways off by now, and the timing was good, as the sun was close to touching the western horizon.

Maragarn lifted his nose and took in the scent of the fire. He closed his eyes and found comfort in it for it was the smell of home. He twitched at the prospect of seeing his grandsire. He opened his eyes and began to trot.

"This way...my tribe is this way!" he said pointing in the direction of the smokey scent. He hoisted the spear from his back and began to trot. During his travels to and from the Centaur city he found that running the wilds with a spear in his hand seemed more natural. "It's not too much further!"

Charon was glad for Maragarn that they had finally reached his tribe. Glad, too, that his grandfather would be healed by the roots he carried. However, Charon was beginning to get very uncomfortable at the thought of meeting Maragarn's entire tribe. Maybe it was all the time he had been spending out in the wild this past few weeks. Maybe he had been away from Embar for so long that his tolerance for being around large groups of people had been reduced. Whatever the reason, Charon was not reacting well to the thought of what lay ahead. His discomfort was evident by the slowing of his pace. Charon slipped to the back of the group, trailing them a short distance. His breath became short and his eyes darted back and forth, sure signs of an impending anxiety attack. "Uh oh," thought Charon. "It's been a while since it was this bad."

Fir'ath slowed Mithril's pace and turned the great silver warhorse so as he could turn his own head and look back at the struggling Charon.

'For once', he thought, 'I will meet a tribe of people just like my own. Outcasts accept within the comfort of their own people'. And he wondered what similiarities the Satyr and Raptoran shared because of it.

But as he looked back at the hyperventilating Charon, he felt even more invigorated and free as obviously Charon felt put upon and trapped. Fir'Ath stretch his massive wingspan into the air, his image made greater by powerful trotting animal beneath him.

'How the unchanged were so small compared to the new races', he thought.

He chuckled and asked Charon, "Coming Deathwalker?"

"Coming ... I'm ... just a little ... winded," said Charon. "Maybe I'll ... maybe I'll just rest here while you folks go on ahead." Charon looked around desperately for something. "Yes, maybe I'll just camp here for the night . Yes ... yes, this is an excellent spot. Perfect for me, really. You can come and get me in the morning when we head out." Charon forced an uncomfortable smile and nodded his head rapidly.

Pshyeah...with *my* spot checks? I'm lucky to know that we're in a forest!

Eswarth kept pace with Maragarn as the little Satyr picked up his pace. He noted that the others were falling a bit behind, but as they were together, and Eswarth was near to Maragarn, the centaur figured that no one was left to their own. All would be well.

Eswarth was sure to remain just a bit behind Maragarn as they cantered through the forest. He noted humorously that the satyr had a way of going under obstacles that Eswarth himself needed to either go over or around.

Eswarth was sure that Maragarn was actually happy.

"Have it your way then human," Fir"ath replied with a smirk.

As he turned he was pleasantly surprised at how much distance was between him and the rest of the group.

"Excellent time for a gallop, don't you think Mithril? Perhaps we can overshoot that quick little Satyr!" and with that they were off, chunks of earth launched back as Mithril exploded into a full charge.

Maragarn quickened his pace and occasionally lept into the air! This was a fine day indeed. Not only would he save his grandfather but his companions would meet his tribe...one of them being a centaur.

As Fir'ath and Mithril charged past him, Maragrn became acutely aware that he was uncertain as to how well his friends would be received by the tribe. Certainly Eswarth would be revered but the others might be viewed as intruders without Maragarn leading the way.

Although Maragrn walked faster than most two-leggeds he had no chance of catching a horse. "Fir'ath! Wait! Don't go into the camp!" Maragrn cried out hoping that he could be heard.

Fir'Ath heard Maragarn's warning at the same time he saw movement past a tree far ahead. His instincts from years of playing in the woods back home served him well. He leapt off his great steed as three arrows came out of the thicket and over the horse where he once had been.
Tumbling and coming to a crouched stop, he lowered his wings to the ground as he watched the very gifted warhorse take a sharp turn and head for more cover.

'Oh,' he thought, 'are we there?' he chuckled to himself.

To his surprise the warhorse was turning again and coming back at full gallop to save him. 'Where did you get this beast Blind Man?!' he questioned incredulously. He waited for Mithril to pass, readying himself for a leap onto her back.

Maragarn held his breath as he watched the arrows fly from the thicket. 'If they didn't like me before they'll surely hate me now', he thought.

Maragarn placed his spear on the the ground and showed his palms. He took slow steps forward so as not to alarm. Looking back he said, "I truly have no idea how well you'll all be received. My tribe is very suspicious of outsiders. Let me make sure it's okay that you can come in."

Maragarn called out, "Hello my brethren, it's me, Maragarn. I have returned from the outside."

"I bring back the cure for what ails my Grandsire and others that may be sick like him. May My companions and I enter the camp?" Maragarn figured that they would refuse but he held hope that they would not.

As Maragarn held out his empty hands in a sign of peace, Fir'Ath lept onto Mithril's back. Not trained for such a maneuver, he over-compensated in his leap and almost came crashing down the other side of her. As luck had it, his right wing caught her chest and held him to her long enough for him to grab hold of the reigns with his hands.

Recovering his dignity, he galloped her away and behind his companions.

At the satyr's call, Eswarth slowed to a cantor, allowing Maragarn to open some small distance between himself and the centaur. I wondered what sort of isolationists these satyr might be.

He watched in amused fascination as Fir'Ath displayed his considerable horsemanship and wondered if that level of apparent skill was common among the raptorans.

In all, Esawarth thought, it was not truly necessary for the entire band of travellers to enter the Satyr encampment. In point of fact, Eswarth did not even know for sure whether Maragarn would be joinging them further north. Surely his small clan would have need of the youngster?

Maragarn knew the use of the crossbow bolts, and he knew that no one was really in danger. The first bolt is a warning shot, because yelling to a traveller was typically a waste of time, as they seldome could hear over the horse's clopping, and you could also startle the buffalo.

The next bolt landed a full fifty feet in front of them, and it was white, indicating that the group could proceed. Maragarn pulled the unremarkable shaft from the ground, intending to return it to the sentry. No sense wasiting it.

After almost a minute of walking, a voice called down from the boughs of a maple tree. "Sorry Maragarn, didn't mean to frighten your friend!" The voice belonged to a childhood friend of Maragarn's named Red. (His coat was a deep reddish brown).

Knowing Red as he did, Maragarn knew he wasn't sorry for Startling anyone. No, Maragarn was sure that Red enjoyed every moment of it.

Red often spoke of looking forward to the day he was trusted with the job of Sentry. That day had apparenlty come.

"I know that voice..." Maragarn said slyly "...so it seems that the Watchers of Night finally saw it fit to let you guard our camp, eh? Surely we're doomed..." Maragarn laughed. It seemed that it was the first time he had laughed in weeks.

It was good to hear Red's voice. He was one of the few that actually liked Maragarn and had even defended him from ridicule from their peers. "Red, I've got some companions with me as you can see. They've helped me greatly in my recent trip. Would it be okay for them to come into the camp? Without them I may not have made it back here."

Maragarn looked back to the group and said, "I really don't see much of a problem with you coming in but you never know...some of my kin are decently afraid of outsiders"

"Things are well here, Maragarn. The herd has stopped moving, and the elders say we'll be here for some time. I stopped in and saw your grandfather, too. He's in good spirits. He'll be happy to see you."

As the group continued to walk, Red thumpped to the ground beisde them. He landed on his feet, but appeared to hit harder than he'd expected. "It always looks so easy when the Watchers do it," he explained with a grimmace.

One by one he faced the members of the unlikely band, smiling and nodding to each. I'm sure it's been a long time since any of us have seen a Centaur," he said to Eswarth with a friendly smile, leaning on his longbow.

Fir'Ath trotted Mithril up to the group, but such that she wouldn't make offense. A few paces away he dismounted, wings still partially extended in the air and stood next to the warhorse, awaiting introduction.

Maragarn was ready to head out to the tribe but hesitated. Looking back at the others he motioned to each as he said, "Oh, Red...this is Eswarth, a Centaur Champion...Fir' Ath a...a...of the feathery folk... Charon of the Great City and Hommal of the Mountain Forges." (Hommal is a dwarf, yes?)

Maragarn picked at the end of his ram horns as he so often did when he was eager. "Red, I wouldn't expect the elders to have any issue with our Centaur friend but what of the others? Will High Sire Scyntharrys be angry you think?"

Maragarn was visibly nervous. High Sire Scyntharrys never cared much for Maragarns family and even openly disrespected them. Maragarn secretly wondered if he would use the presence of outsiders as a means of further antagonizing.

"I don't know," Red said matter of factly, nocking a new arrow. This one was red. "Youve got another mile or so to go before you find the tribe. I'll alert them of your arrival."

Red drew back the bow and let the arrow fly in the direction the group would travel. The arrow climbed quickly, reaching it's pinnacle, and turning back down. As it began it's descent, it emmitted a whislting noise like the screach of an eagle. (Only a little different to the ears of those who make a knowledge nature check, dc18). :)

"Scyntharry is a tad sick too from what I hear. I doubt he'll bother to make any trouble for you," Red said with a shrug of a shoulder.

Eswarth greeted the young Satyr with a smile.

"You know," he said in his deep baritone voice, "it seems it might be simpler for us to all take a cue from our friend Charon who sits back aways. I wouldn't want to create trouble for anyone; I'll be more than willing to wait here for you to finish your business, Maragarn. Asumming, that is, that you will continue to accompany us on our way?"

Maragarn thought for a moment...It would be rude to not let them accompany me to the tribe. There is food there and fresh water. Were it not for them I may not even be here right now. No, they should come with me. Regardless of what the elders say it is the right thing to do.
Maragarn turned back to face the group and spoke, "It is only right that you come with me, my friends. The elsers of my tribe continue to carry the burden of shame...not you...and not me. Change will come to them eventually and one day they will have to overcome that. If that day is now then so be it. Besides, the High Sire is also sick, so says Red, he just may have tha same fever as my Grandsire. Knowing that you folks helped me inadvertantly help him may change his view of Outsiders. Please, walk with me."

Maragarn pulled his sickle out and began walking in the direction of the whistling arrow.

Another ailing Satyr? Perhaps it was the same illness as Maragarn's Grandfather, perhaps not. The herbs Maragarn carried might not be able to save this other creature. If it were to die feeling this "shame" that Maragarn spoke of it may not pass over. Strong emotions, especially shame or sadness can bind a soul to eternal suffering in this world. Charon could not let that happen.

"Well if this Satyr dies I should be there to help, just in case" said Charon. He did not direct the comment to his companions, rather it was to the skull resting on a tree stump in front of him. "Will you be joining me, or would you rather camp here?" As if in response the skull slipped off the stump and rolled clumsily to Charon's feet.

"I'm coming," yelled Charon to his companions. He quickly gathered up his things and ran toward the group. Any signs of his previous anxiety attack have vanished.

Red grinned a little and nodded his agreement. "They'll have to accept that the world is changing with or without them."

a few minutes later, the group crested a hill. Looking down there was a mixture of cone shaped tents, and larger rectangular cloth covered structures. Satyrs milled about hanging laundry, gathering fire wood, tanning hides, and the like.

Just on the other side of the settlement was a large shifting brown mass of Buffalo.

Maragarn easily picked out the large tent where his family would be found. There was smoke coming from the center, indicating a fire was going. His mother was cooking! A thought that brought the comforts of home to the forefront of his mind.

Maragarn sighed in relief. Though he had seen his nomadic village every day of his life, often from a similar vantage point, he now saw it differently and became acutely aware of how much he missed it.

The party drew closer to the village and Maragarn began to feel a bit of emptyness. He did miss his family during his travels but he came to a hot realization that he didn't have much promise of a fulfilling life. He had tasted something more. His village seemed so small now.

Maragarn said, "My mother will be sure to welcome you with a feast my friends! I do hope you like it. If the smell of the food is any measure to it you'll question as to if you actually want to leave."

They traveled closer and Maragran stopped and turned to face the group. "Remember, my kin have very little contact, if any, with outsiders. They may be both curious and fearful. Though the elders were alive during the night of flying fires so they are not ignorant of others ways...just removed."

Maragarn felt slightly ashamed of his kins paranoia but it was a reality that should be known.

He turned and continued into the village.

Charon fumbled along behind the group, adjusting his satchel and reorganizing the supplies within. Scurry clung safely out of the way, nestling in the thick and wiry hair on Charon's head.

"Well, I hope that my services are not needed," said Charon, lowering his spider friend back into his satchel. "Still it would be interesting to learn how these folk prepare their dead".

Scurry ... scurried back into the safety of his little web home inside Collinsworth without a reply.

Maragarn lead the group down the path and into the town. Satyr, ranging in color from black, to white, to brown stopped to watch the group. Mostly their faces wore expressions of curiosity, though some of the older faces were painted with disapproval.

Within moments, the group was clearly the center of attention. Chatter quieted to whispers. Mothers put a staying hand on the shoulders of their young to keep them from running out to the path.

Eswarth held the majority of the attention, though Fir'ath was a close second.

Maragarn's father stood at the door flap of a large green canvas tent. This would be the tent of worship where the daily services would take place. The services were made up mostly of thanks and praise to Elohnna, followed by begging for forgiveness that lasted almost a long.

The service would last a few hours. Maragarn recognized the prayer that was being said as the closing of the ceremony. Judging by the time of the day, this service typically consisted of the older Satyr.

Maragarn's father's face was stern, but his eyes brimmed with relief. "Welcome home my son," he said. "I can tell by your face you were successful, no doubt thanks to your companion?" he faced Eswarth as he asked the question.

Margarn looked back to his traveling companions and nodded almost too slightly to be noticed. Taking a deep breath Maragarn said, "Aye...though Honored Eswarth was not the only one. Fir'Ath the Winged One, Charon the Bone Talker, and the dwarf Hommal, were of equal help. Were it not for theor battle prowess I might not be here now." Maragarn turned and gave his friends a sincer bow of gratitude.

Pulling the pouch of sapling bits out, Margarn eagerly said, "Where is grandsire? I have the cure here for him...please...no more time should be wasted"

Eswarth smiled as they entered the satyr village, and when the somewhat older satyr spoke apparently to him, he began to answer. Margarn was quicker though.

Eswarth smiled again, and put his hand out to the elder. "We are only glad to be of service." He said grandly. "Margarn places too much wieght upon our aid; he would likely have completed his task without us, but we were glad to lend aid."

(OOC: WF, I can't for the life of me remember Maragarn's father's name. For the sake of this post, I'm just going to call him Gary. You can change the name anytime you like.)

OOC: His name is Serephus

Serephus's face changed a bit at Eswarth's words. Those familiar with the expressions of the Satyr would recognize it as the pride of a father hearing of his son's competence. Those who were unfamiliar would just call it different.

"Thank you," Serephus said as he grasped Eswarth's hand. "We are in your debt," he said addressing the group.

"My son," Serephus said turning to Maragarn. He stood to face Maragarn, and put his hands on his son's shoulders. He stern visage melted away a bit, and his eyes brimmed with tears that refused to fall.

"I've missed you," he said simply, clapping one of his son's shoulders. With a deep breath, Serephus's voice returned to normal. "Let's be on with it."

Gary walked away from tent. "Follow me if you will."

Maragrn's breath shortened and he felt as though he would almost drop a tear at his sire's kind and bolstering words. Success was not something Maragarn was ever praised with as he was generally looked at as a weakling and outcast amongst many of the elders.

He took a deep breath and glanced to Eswarth and smiled in gratitude. He glanced back to the others and nodded and closed his eyes and once again took a deep breath.

Looking towards the nomadic village, Maragarn stood tall and began to walk with Serephus. He was too happy to speak and simply savored the moment.

Charon stayed back behind Eswarth. He noted that most of the interactions were happening in front of the centaur. As more of the Satyrs started to gather Charon planned on the majority of them to continue to gather before and possibly to the sides of the great beast.

Charon quickly made some more calculations based upon the direction the party was headed and the apparent population dispersion throughout the camp. He moved to what he thought would be the ideal quadrant behind the centaur that would minimize his contact with the Satyrs. While this was far from an idea situation, Charon felt more comfortable at the "business end" of the centaur than in amongst the crowd.

Serephus smiled broadly at onlookers as the group past by many tents. Even with the history of the Satyrs being what it was, Maragarn's family still held a good deal of influence within the tribe. While many blamed them for causing this curse, those same still looked to them to make things right.

The tent that they finally stopped at was very large, and could easily accomodate the entire group, and thensome.

"Maragarn," Came a voice from just inside. The voice belonged to , Maragarn's grandfather. Strangely, it didn't sound very sickly. "Come in, lad. Bring your friends."

Maragarn ducked under the flap his father held up for him. His eyes snapped open in surprise to see his Grandfather standing in the tent, dressed as though he'd been up and about all day. This was not frame of a sick man. Even more incredulous, the older Satyr even looked like he might have gained a few pounds since the last time Maragarn saw him.

With a broad smile, welcomed his grandson home with open arms, casting a wink under the open flap at Serephus.

Maragarn lost his breath...and blinked...repeatedly. With an obvious look of confusion on his face he stammered out what words he could, "What?...How?...But you..." He looked to the ground in contemplation trying work out the logic of the healthy elder.

Turning to his father, Maragarn, bewildered and surprised, said, "Da, didn't you say..." he looked back at his grandsire who displayed a wide smile as bright as the sun, "Granda, how did you get better?"

"I'm afraid I've been well the whole time," he said gently.

"You've been tested and passed, my grandson. You have always had trouble seeing the strength within yourself that we have always seen." He paused for the words to settle in.

Maragarn lost his breath as though he'd been hit in the chest with a hammer. His eyes darted about as he quickley reviewed his life and his gransire's words in regards to it. A hot feeling came to his head and his heart sunk.

He realized that he had never had the confidence that others had because he had the perception that he was unable to provide the way others could. He realized that through all of these years he was the one who limited him and undermined his confidence.

He found himself looking at the ground again as he sorted this epiphany through. His eyes welled up slightly and looked at his grandsire squarely and simply said, "Thank you..."

Maragarn found himself pulled into a tight embrace. When his grandfather let go, he said, "Look not at the ground any longer, Maragarn. Stand straight and proud. You are the future of our race."

Serephus, still standing in the doorway stepped outside and let the flap close behind him. He turned and addressed Eswarth.

"Once again, thank you for your help, and that of your people. We owe you a great debt. I have seen the future of our people, and Maragarn plays a very big role, but his success was unsure. It was necessary to show him that he is capable."

Eswarth smiled and bowed low to the elderly satyr. "'Twas a pleasure to be of service to you, sir. Su'tharc will be well pleased at the success of our venture. Add to that the pleasure of meeting new friends, and we've been profitable indeed."

He kept still though, he still admitted to himself the obvious strength of the race, and would bear out such emotional idiocy.

Serephus nodded at the human in understanding. He turned to his son and his visage hardend a bit.

"You've been tested Maragarn, and you've passed. This was however, only the beginning. You've always held your close your beliefs and strong your convictions. You will be the one to bare our story and restore our honor. It will be your burden to shed our shame, that we may walk once again wtih our elven cousins, and hold high our heads."

He paused only a moment to let his son consider the weight of the task he'd just laid at his son's feet.

"Your first test was to prevent the loss of something important to you. This is a small thing when compared to the task of regaining something important to hundreds of others, that has already been lost."

He stepped closer to his son and locked his gaze. He spoke softly, "Fate created the Satyr because there were none yet." Serephus had a way of saying things that sounded obvious and thoughtless, but held great meaning if the listening were truely listening.

Maragarn never thought of his race in those terms. He had always been taught that they were elves in shame not Satyrs with pride. While he personally held no reason to be considered an outcast from other races, he was continually surrounded by those who did.

Perhaps his kin were changing their viewpoints. Perhaps it was Maragarn who was chosen to strike out in order to change the viwpoints of his kin. Just maybe, there were many hopes that he was carrying for his tribe. He felt slightly embarressed to be thinking in such egocentric terms.

"Sire, I'm not sure where to even begin. But as the hunter knows, it is the first step that leads to the kill."

Maragarn knew that his time here was short. That in order to complete the overwhelming task of building the reputation for his tribe he must venture out. The thought was not nearly as terrifying this time as it was before.

Maragarn looked to everyone in the ceremonial tent and looked back to his sire, "We will see a day when the curse of the gods will be our blessing...I promise you that."

Turning to the rest of his travel companions he said, "If you'll have me, I would consider it an honor to travel and fight by your sides."

"Curse of the Gods?!" Fir'Ath almost shouted as he stared at Serephus and Maragarn. "Blasphemy I say," he exclaimed and spat on the floor of the tent.

Before a move could be made by anyone to his outburst, Fir'Ath took a step towards the two Satyrs. With his head held high Fir'Ath, obviously overcome with emotion, spat questions at them in quick succession.

"You mean to walk with the Elves? The same elves who abandoned you in your time of most need? Why? Because you see them as the Master Race and us as cursed? To shed shame?! For what deed?! To the fire I say with that! For what has happened to you...to me...to my people...this is not a curse but a blessing by the forces of nature, a force setting things straight."

Charon suddenly felt very hot and light headed. He started to pull his satchel off of his shoulder and noticed that the tent was beginning to spin. "What an odd thing for a tent to do," said Charon as the ground rose up to meet him.

Eswarth looked behind himself to see Charon crumpled in a pile on the floor of the tent. Somehow his satchel had come to rest on top of his head. Collinsworth had tumbled out and landed beside him. For a moment it looked as if Charon's head had had fallen off his body.

Maragarn looked at Fir'Ath sharply and said, "Fir'Ath, it is not the elves that need to have proof of value of my kin...it is ourselves. The elves never abandoned us...we abandoned them. And you are right, the change in what we were as people is a blessing...not a curse."

Maragarn held his arm out to Fir'Ath hoping he would take it into his own as a sign of unity between them.

Fir'Ath looked taken aback by Maragarn's response, perhaps as if he didn't expect it to agree with his own ideology. After a moment he looked upon him with what could only be newfound respect.

"Proof of value?" he asked in disbelief. He looked about the room at the other satyrs and said, "look no further than outside this tent and the community around you. Not one man, woman or child in your clan turned their eyes from me in shame or fear as we rode in. Not one of them had the rapidly-beating heart of prey, nor the readiness to spring and flee. This is a proud race my friend, a warrior race, waste no time seeking redemption or acceptance from any kind not your own," he said with sincere ferocity, but still did not take his hand.

Instead Fir'Ath put his own hand up to block the gesture. "Save your hand Maragarn for a time when my people seek it. Let the gesture mean something when and if the future I see forthcoming intercepts us on our journey. For then, our people may then have the need to ally with one another as warrior brothers, to fight a greater evil."

Eswarth clopped around, spinning in place, his long black tail flicking in irritation. He knelt down upon his front knees, leaning low over Charron. This little human was cold and clammy. Su'tharc had said that when a human was cold, it often meant they were ill. Of course, the Elder had said the same about when they were "too warm". Nonetheless, some warm stew would likely do Charon well...trouble was: Eswarth didn't have any stew.

Eswarth drew open the stopper to his water bottle and splashed some of the liquid onto Charon's brow while he spoke.

"Pride is good until it becomes arrogance. Fear is also your ally, until it becomes foot-binding. Do not be so quick to slap a friendly hand away, but be even less quick to ignore a friend in need." There was clear displeasure in his voice as he spoke and tended to Charon.

"I guess I, I must have fainted." He wiped the water off of his face, glanced curiously at his wet hands, sniffed them, and with a relieved expression dried them on his pants. "Well, if they are not going to kill Fir'ath then I should like to get going immediately. Unless there is some other matter keeping us here?"

Fir'Ath turned, stepped away and walked out of the tent.

Quote from: GriznuqSerephus nodded at the human in understanding. He turned to his son and his visage hardend a bit.

You will be the one to bare our story and restore our honor. It will be your burden to shed our shame, that we may walk once again wtih our elven cousins, and hold high our heads."

I just want to explain a bit OOC why Fir'Ath is acting the way he is. The statement Serephus made above (page 6 of thread - and specifically the last sentance of above quote) set him off on a bit of anger. Fir'Ath believes, from the short time he has known Maragarn and the very brief time he has been exposed to the Satyr people (his observations on the ride in), that the Satyr race is FAR superior to that of the Elves.

He strongly believes that Serephus' sentiment in regards to the Elves is absolutely and unforgivably foolish. (a.k.a. Serephus is a weak leader)
Title: Satyr tracks (Completed)

Actually, I think I might not have conveyed the message completely.

The history of the Satyr, if it's not posted... I'll look around... They were once Elves. They were  a tribe who worshipped some god whom I forget, and routinly sacrificed goats to him.

With the emerald dawn, when the gods blinked into existance, that god was displeased with this ritual slaughter of animals in his name, and punished them by turning them into what they are now. At some point Elhonna (sp?) stepped in and took them in as her own, but left them as Satyr so as not to anger the other guy.

So you see, they're no longer Elves as a punishment. Now, Maragarn's grandfather was the high priest who conducted these sacrifices, so many of the older members of the tribe blame him, while some still look to him for guidance... But ALL believe they are living out a penance, and still think at some point, the debt will be payed, and their Elven forms restored.

Serephus doesn't believe this and has embraced being a Satyr, as has Maragarn and his Grandfather.

The shame they are talking about is that of angering a god, which DID happen and IS real, even if it's self imposed.

Most of the world just says "Hey look, a race of the dawn" whereas some of the older races know the story... The Satyr, being the ones who were punished, sometimes feel shame, as they expect to be shunned by races of the other god there, as well as any who may know the whole story.

Maragarn's charge is to show those who believe the "punished race" to be inferior that they are not. It's not just a silly belief that they'd be shunned, because there ARE tribes of elves who know the story, worship that first god, and look down on the Satyr for having angered him.

Maragarn will have to handle everyone else.

Very cool backstory.

Would Fir'Ath know of these "Weirdo-Anti-Goat-Elves"? And more importantly, would he make the connection of these W.A.G.E. to this awesome Satyr race before him?

If he doesn't (make the connection), then Fir'Ath's sentiment within this thread is still viable and makes sense.

Well, the story would be well known by the folks within the city proper, however you'd mentioned that Fir'ath spent little time IN the city. I'll leave it up to you whether or not he knows it. The story would have been one that was told by a campfire by grandparents to little ones and such... The term "Satyr" would have been used in the story. Anyone having heard the story would know that Maragarn and his tribe were the ones in the story.

But what I wanted to convey is that Fir'ath is smart enough to have precieved a very heavy meaning behind the discussion... You're correct that no one in the city diverted their gaze from you, but instead they stood proud... However, you're not an elf. It's not the general public they're shamed by, it's their Elven cousins who feared associating with them... So there's some important feelings and objectives here.

It would also have been clear to him that it would not be Serephus' intention to grovel at some culture who felt they were higher than the Satyr, but instead let that culture know that the Satyr are here, are staying, and are no longer apologizing.

Maragarn's job is to figure out how best to show this.

I'm not telling you how to play your character, I just don't want to let anything escape your attention. It's certainly believable that someone of great pride would believe that enraged discust would be an acceptible response to the predjudice the Satyrs are facing... Just know that it IS real.

Serephus breathed easily in the midst of all the excited words.

"So you see, my son, your task will not be easy," he said with an ironic smile. "Your friend knows not of our history, and does not understand the need for our story to be told. There are those who would sooner see us erradicated. It needs to be made clear to them, as well as anyone else, that it will not happen."

Corellon Larithien was the other god, as I recall. This is Eswarth's very own patron!

Eswarth bowed his head and accepted the pouch from Margarn. He held them for a moment, then spoke. "It is good that you should return this gift, young one. But they will remain unusefull where I go now, and knowing not where our journey will take us next, nor where thereafter, the wind whipsers in my ear that our taking them with us may mean that they never return to the earth properly." He clopped a few paces to approach Margarn's grandsire. "Honored elder of this younger race," he said, "I am sure that Su'Tharc would have me place these saplings in your charge. Mayhap with your Mistress's aid you might cause them to grow here in your lands, and so spread the majesty that is the Ironbark."

Eswarth held the small pouch low for the satyr to accept.

"Maragarn," Serephus said. "A merchant happened upon Red a few days ago. He came from the north, and he said..." Serephus trailed off as he turned and walked to the far end of the tent.

Serephus opened a trunk, and produced a parchment. "The Festival of the Dawn," Serephus read, showing the group. Beneath those words was a colorful painting of a butterfly.

"The butterfly represents change," Serephus explained. "Or so we're told. The merchange said that the Port City of Dannath is having a fourteen day celebration in honor of the Emerald Dawn, welcoming ALL of the Dawn's children."

Serephus' tone was hopeful, though it sounded forced. The Satyr was suggesting something that no other Satyr had every considered. The idea that there was a community that might not only accept them, but embrace and welcome them was ridiculous, a child's fancy. Yet here, this old Elf, disfigured by a curse on the very morning Dannath was going to honor, was suggesting that Maragarn should attend.

"There are those of us who cannot accept ourselves," He said to his son. "That has never been a flaw of yours. For those who live in shame, a thing like this would not be welcomed. For you, this may be an opportunity to tell our story."

Serephus rolled the parchment, tied it with twine and handed it to his son. "The festival starts on the second moon."

Maragarn was awestruck. "You want ME to represent our tribe?" Instinctively he looked at the ground but quickly lifted his head to look his father in the eyes. He then focused towards his grandsire who simply gave a reassuring nod.

It seemed to him that fate was challenging him with one dauntless task to another. The difference was that the first was a challenge of his inner strength and this was one that tested the uprising spirit of his kin.

"Sire..." Maragarn said, more as bolster to his own confidence, "...the wisdom of the elders has stated that life does not put before us anything we are not ready to handle. I hope that I can proove that...for more than just our tribe." Standing with dignity he stated, "I will go to see the ways of the Outsiders and make our kin known."

A puzzled look came across his face and he looked to Eswarth and asked, "Your travels take us north...will we be back in time for the festival?"

Eswarth considered the satyr's query seriously. He shifted about, clopping his forehoove repeatedly as he mentally counted out time; his hoof was striking upon a stone that lay flat, but above the surface of the ground, and the clatter sounded for all the world like two dice skittering off of each other in the hands of a figeting player.

"Well," he began deep and slow. "In truth I don't know how long our journey will be. But I have faith in our GM to make this scenario mesh neatly with his plans for this Dawn Festival. I'm sure that there will be enough time, one way or another."
