Title: Meeting on the Rosewalk
Post by: Wildfire on September 11, 2006, 07:51:19 PM
Duthash Dracum Basque VY 237 (May 17)

The recent events had lent itself to exhaustion. Although Maal had fully healed from the skirmish in Rivercliff Keep she had not fully recovered. However, growing up in the Wildlands had taught her that danger does not wait for rest. It is always there in one form or another.

Clan survival depended on the vigilance of watchful eyes. If one was caught sleeping on their watch shame was brought to that person and would not be forgiven for a great deal of time. This could be considered a fate worse than exile.

Having committed herself to her morning scout about town, she roused out of bed in the predawn morning to tread, what was now, familiar roads.

The weather the last few days had grown unpredictable. One minute there was sun, the next minute, rain. Regardless of what the weather brought, Maal geared up and headed out. This morning seemed darker than others and Maal knew that there was cloud cover.

The eastern side of the town was quiet but particular attention was given to it since this was the side that the dark ones attacked from. It was also the direction that the ruined Keep was in. Vervishkuk had still not been found and could very well be waiting for his chance to strike. He had taken her down before and no doubt he could do it again. Only this time she was alone.

Satisfied that nothing was threatening she decided to move along to the other parts of town. As she approached the Rosewalk Bridge she could see a lone dark figure standing in the lantern lit mist of the river.

Even though a few days had passed, Maal Brengain  still felt exhausted by the battle at Rivercliff Keep.  She felt defeated... and even, in a way, cheated...

Defeated and humilated by Vervishkuk, and cheated out of a victory by spiteful gods who continued to punish her - even here in exile, so far removed from the Wildlands.  She felt anger at the gods... or perhaps it was herself that she should be angry with - for why should the gods care if she lived or died.  Perhaps she did not properly prepare herself - train hard enough - for the confrontation at the ruined keep.  Perhaps the failure truly was within herself.  She would not let it happen again... she would work harder - train harder - to prepare for the next battle.  She would not be humilated again!

With her head held high and proud, the Wildlander approached the lone figure on the bridge...

"Aye, I slept well enough, master Severen,"  replied Maal Brengain as she came to stand next to the priest of Takhisis.  "I would speak wit' ye...  if'n ye 'as th' time, tha' is."

"Er... Well, as I tol' ye b'fore, I'm, uh..." unusually nervous, the wildlander struggled for the right word, "...innerested... in learnin' more aboot Takhisis.  I'm a-wonderin' wha' ye c'n teach meh..."  Her voice trailed off...

"So, Uh, Severen...  Wha' does one do ta worship Takhisis?  Where would I start?  Wha' would be... required o' me?"

A sly smirk painted itself across Severen face. He reached up and caressed the silver holy symbol hanging from his neck. "Well, first you must know that there is no steadfast route to doing so. We all tread our own paths. Granted there is guidance to be found but each must choose how it is they embrace Takhisis. Often times the methods of such an endeavor will come to you. But if you believe in executing the will of Takhisis then you would enforce strength through hardship...and even death."

Severen pulled his cowl back to reveal his face. Staring off to the south he said, "The question you must ask yourself is whether or not you have the strength for that execution."

"Ye speak o' hardship an' strength," replied Maal Brengain.  "Believe me when I say tha' I 'ave seen me own share o' hardship..." the wildlander paused and straightened up, "an' I know those hardships 'ave made me a stronger warrior.  I also know I 'ave th' strength ta confront furth'r hardships," Maal Brengain's chin raised up slightly with pride and confidence. "I will face anythin' tha' the gods throw down at me... an' I ain't afraid o' death! Nay! I will welcome death when it comes fer me!"

Severen looked at her coldly, his eyes penetrating into hers and said, "Welcome death you may...but would you welcome death to those you hold dear if it made others stronger should they survive by it? Do you have the strength to inflict pain to those close to you if they would become stronger?"

Severen raised an eyebrow and pulled his cowl over his head. The light of the morning reflected off the lower part of his face and the rest was enveloped in shadow. "Kossuth rises higher...indeed it's getting to be bright for my eyes." Though she could not see much expression on his face, Maal could sense he was looking intently at her. "Think on what I've said Maal...for you, like many others, may not be as strong as you think you are. Enduring hardship is one thing...inflicting hardship is something else entirely."

The first hammer strike from the forge screamed out as if to wake the rest of Threshold from it's slumber. "Ah, the bell of breakfast...or supper in my case. Would you care to join me in a morning meal, Maal?"

Those I hold dear? Maal Brengain thought to herself.  Hmph! Despite his seeming wisdom, he really does no' know me at all!  Jus' who does he think I hold dear in this strange town?

"Aye, let us break bread together," replied the wildlander.  "I am hungry for both knowledge as well as food!  Lead on, Master Severen..."
