Title: The Hunted Hawks
Post by: Dray on January 31, 2006, 11:22:50 AM
Continued from Session 5 - A Passing

Kit was quiet for awhile, allowing Laren time to think as he guided the horse down the trail. Sitting behind and against him on Starsprinter, she could feel the tension within him. After a few hours of riding, it did not dissipate as she had expected.

'He has been through so much these past few days,' she thought.

Finally, and with a bit of hesitation in her voice, she asked, "Laren, can we talk for a bit?"

Kossuth had long gone to rest below the land and the moons were out casting their eery glow. The cool night sky was freckled with stars and a clustered river of them shimmerd across the length of the celestial dome. The smell of turned soil was wafting frome the road ahead and a dark strip could be seen on the horizon.

Laren and Kit were again weary with their day's travel. Both had expressed an interest in settling down into a soft feather mattress and a pillow to match. The jostling of the day's ride had been hard on their bones and they ached all over. Starsprinter in his own quest to get home kepot marching on. His stride was steady but slower now after a long days travel.

Soon the dark strip got taller and revealed itself to be a line of trees. The road and river cut into the forest and soon became open fields. The scent of turned soil was much stronger here and both Kit and Laren knew they had entered the farm fields of Little Threshold. To their left were grazing fields and to their right were orchards of trees. In the distance they could see the few lonely lights marking the farming hamlet of Little Threshold.

They passed through the hamlet and traveled down the wide road to the larger part of the town. The darkness of the forest enveloped the rider and horse and they could hardly see their hands in front of them. Starsprinter knew the way home though even through the darkness.

Before long, they crossed over the Angelhawk Bridge. From out of The Mushroom O' the Stump Garret and Eldan came out and said nothing thought the looks on their faces spoke volumns. With out a word they escorted Starsprinter to the Thornhedge and helped Kit and Laren down. The door to the Inn opened and Keltan was waiting with a warm smile. Laren and Kit entered into the belly of the inn and keltan closed the door. The familiar hoofbeats of the horse could be heard trailing off into the distance. As Keltan escortes the two exhausted companions to their rooms he says, "I'm glad to see that you're both back."

Um no, Laren is, he is just to short to reach the gas pedal.

Kit tapped Starsprinters quarters gently and he started off in a light trot.

"I don't think I have any more breakfast left to dump on you," Kit said. Laren didn't have to turn to know that she said it with a smile though.

"My lower back hurts from the fall though, can we keep it a mild trot at first?"

"So am I" Laren said cooly and collectively.

"Hey, if you get sick, please turn your head... or try to get it all over me... " Laren was clearly trying to lighten the mood, but his heart wasn't in it.

Without raising her head Kit said, "I'm scared Laren."

"The visions I had were the ones you had described. A ravaged battleground where demons from scary bedtime stories fought one another."

Kit shivered.

Laren sighed, now over his initial ire. "It's alright Kit, I know you wouldn't have had you know the results... I know I wouldn't have, that's for sure." "Laren chuckled a bit.

"but I know what you mean. Nothing is really the same after that, is it?"

"No thanks, I don't think my stomach could hold it." Kit said with a slight grimace.

Laren sat in front of her in the saddle, waiting for Kit to kick the sides of Starsprinters hindquarters and send them into a gallop.

Kit lowered her head, and rested her brow on the top and back of Laren's.

"After a moment she whispered, I really am sorry Laren, I shouldn't have touched the Eye," and after a pause she added, "I feel....different now." Her voice reflected bewilderment at the last two words.

Laren Helped kit up onto the horse, and then began the climb himself. "I have a little sweet apple wine to take the edge off of that headache." Laren remembered his own head throbbing after his introduction to the gem.

"You heard it too?" Kit stood up, her wound forgotten and looked around at the empty hills. "I think you were right Laren, we should be on our way," Kit said in a nervous rush.

Kit opened the gash in the cloth of her skirt and dumped water onto the wound. With a yelp of pain, she brushed her fingernails along the surface of the wound in a rush, trying to expel the dirt from it.

Gritting her teeth she walked back to Starsprinter. "We should get out of here my friend. We can finish our discussion while we make our way home".

Laren looked around from side to side, spun around to look behind him but saw nothing.

"Who said that??" he said, continuing to look around.

A cold wind sweeps up and a trace voice enters Laren's and Kit's head and slowly says, "Valekai...". Both Laren and Kit get cold shivers down their spine and feel as if someone is watching them. Looking around they only see that it's the rolling hills and the jagged mountains to the south.

Laren stared at the waterskin on the ground where he had left it, wondering why she would get up from right next to it, go sit somewhere else and ask someone to get it for her... He shook his head and bent over and piked it up. He thought of asking about it, but decided it wasn't worth the effort.

"So you saw what I did," he said simply, as he handed her the skin.

Kit looked at the napkin and let out a giggle. She looked up at Laren and gave a small cautious smile.

She walked over to a nearby stump, a little to Laren's chagrin as he was anxious to get back on horseback and head out. Sitting down, she pulled up her long skirt along the entire length of her right leg to better inspect the wound.

"Can I have your skin Laren?" she asked innocently, while gently pulling pieces of dirt from the wound.

Laren pulled another cloth napkin from his pocket. The vandals had stitched a logo into a corner of this one that looked just like the one on the sign outside of the Thornhedge inn.

"Here," he said handing the dry napkin to Kit. "You can keep it, I've got dozens."

Kit looked up at Laren, her hair disheveled, eyes red, and face soaked with sweat and tears.

"I'm so sorry Laren, that's all I want to do of course," she said. She looked to almost say more, but hesitated and cleared her throat.

She paused a moment, then finally looked down at her lap while raising a hand to comb her fingers through her hair.

"Paladine, I must be a mess."

She got off the ground and tried to straighten her long skirt, attempting to brush off the dirt from her fall, only to discover a large rip in it. A six inch long gash in the fabric revealed a large bruise with surface scratches on the right side of thigh.

"How many times am I going to hurt myself today?" she mumbled to herself.

Laren sighed and hung his head as he let his hand fall to his side. After a second, he rubbed his temples. With his eyes closed tightly he said in an softer tone, "Look, what's done is done. I cannot undo it, but maybe we can help each other figure out what it's all about."

He opened his eyes and watched her sob for a moment.

"The gods know I could use the help." Laren remembered something his father had said about woman always wanting to help. Maybe that would make her feel better. Truth of the matter was also that he could use the help.

He stretched his hand out again, "Would you please help me with all this? I don't think I can handle it on my own."

He congratulated himself silently. That was a good line. Part of him wanted to roll his eyes at having to say it, but he knew it was the only way to put all this awkwardness behind them and get back on the road.

As she sat up, Kit hesitated at the outstretched small hand. Tears still streaming down her cheeks, but she had at least brightened to a light shade of pink, which was better than red or purple Laren thought.

He could see the truth of his words finally take hold of her mind, for the face that once conveyed shock and a bit of anger turned became reproached. He knew his scorn reached her when she suddenly looked at the ground, looking like a hurt bunny.

She didn't take his hand, and started fiddling with her own in her lap, sniffing away the last of her sobs.

Laren's eyes continued to glare out from under heavy eye brows. He was boring holes into Kit's face.

Great. Now she's going to cry... he thought. Well, damage done I suppose. No sense raking her over the coals any more than I have already, Laren argued with himself, and ultimately lost. No, you know what? I'm not done yet!

"There are reasons this thing isn't worn on a necklace or some ornate piece of headware! These are not times for brash actions."

Laren let his face soften a bit, but only a bit. "Come," He said quietly as he extended an arm. "We really must be going."

When Laren calmed down enough to look at Kit again, he found her staring at him, tears still streaming from her eyes.

"I'm so sorry," she said with a heavy sob.

"I didn't mean to touch it after you said not too, it merely rolled into my hand before I could pull it out of the bag then my mind wasn't my own...I uh...I was in the middle of some great battlefield with strange creatures shaking the ground and the jewel was there I was admiring it, but it wasn't me, it was Markell, no, that ain't right, but it felt like Markell was with me or something...oh, I don't know, something similiar to that it was all so dreadfull..." Kit couldn't finish her rambling as another bout of tears caught up to her.

"Bahhh!" Laren growled as kit lurched forward in a dramatic expulsion of her breakfast. "God it still looks like eggs!"

The disgust was plain on Laren's face, though even he didn't know whether he was offended by the vomit or angry at the whole situation. He though it might be the latter, but he never was good with vomit.

"Ahhhh!" he growled again. He turned his head against the wind and took a deep breath. Letting the air out slowly he turned back as Kit calmed. He looked at her face, now red as an apple, tears streaming freely.

He pulled a cloth napkin that some vandal had stitched the words "The Screaming Eagle" onto when he wasn't looking from his pocket. He handed it to her, or more put it on her hand as she wasn't quite coherent yet.

"Always acting without thinking, you humans! I told[/b] you what it's done to me! Did you think I was lying??

Again he forced himself to calm down. He took the napkin which she was still unaware of back and wet it down. He put the water skin down on the ground within her reaching distance incase she was of a mind. He took the napkin and began wiping her face. He could feel the blood boiling beneath his own face and wondered if he was as red as she.

"We're not playing with dolls here! There are groups of people coming after me for this damned thing, and just as many trying to help me get rid[/i]of it! You think they'd care so much if it was just some toy[/i]?! This blasted thing's gotten my whole damn family killed, and now it's my problem, not yours! Last thing I need is another loved one getting killed over it, and here you go pawing it like a child's ball! I don't need that on my shoulders too!?

Laren's breath came labored and heavily, his eyes glaring out from under furrowed brow. He could feel veins protruding from his neck and forehead. He forced his hands to unclench and his teeth to stop grinding.

Kit became lost in a sea of sensations and imagery as the world of psychic vision collided with the combined chaos of memory and reality. Scenes of war and savage conflict juxtaposed with recollections of her own personal tragedies, overlaid with the all too familiar despair of helpless servitude. The very ground seemed to shudder, lending the sense that gigantic warriors, felt but unseen, tromped nearby and heightened Kit's fear and anxiety, and the touch of a friend's attempted help (or was it an old enemy come to reclaim her?) exacerbated those senses. Her self descended further into the depths of her mind, searching for escape.

Laren was on the ground, trying to figure out a way to get Kit off the horse. 'Why wasn't I given a smaller horse?!' he cursed inwardly.

Kit, her hand still over her mouth, and clutching her stomach tightly, started to convulse. The fair white skin of her face turning purplish blue.

"Not again!" Laren cursed. He did the only thing he could do, he pulled her quickly off the horse by her leg. Watching both of her hands as she collapsed to the ground.

'The jewel must still be in the bag' he thought with relief.

"Breathe!" he yelled as he clumsily lowered her to the ground, leaning over her, his hand already uncorking a waterskin.

With a great cough, as if she had surfaced from some great depth, Kit expelled the contents of her stomach on the ground. With a cry of anguish she sucked in a painful breath.

Laren dodged the expected vomit and moved to her other side. He placed his small hand under her head, and tried to calm her enough to drink water.

As she continued to take in quick ragged breaths she began to cry hysterically.

"Not again...no...Not again." She repeated over and over.

Laren turned as Kit went into some sort of trance. Her eyes had rolled up and all he saw was milky whites. He tried to turn around on the horse, but nearly fell off...

"Awe, now see?? I knew this was a bad idea!!" As she held her mouth and stomach laren hopped off of Starsprinter, and reached up to help her off the horse.

"Don't barf on the saddle... The ride's long enough without having to sit in that."

Laren was vexed.

A blinding flash of light overwhelmed Kit's vision and a shot of energy tingled through her. The flash slowly dissolved and she could see a battle field with various flaring colors. She heard haunting death cries echo across the fields. The blood of montrous, mutants spilled to the ground creating crimson puddles of gore. At once, all sound stopped and a great explosion nearly overloaded all of her senses. It was as if Kossuth itself had rained down upon the frenzied chaos.

Again the flash faded and she could see herself holding the crystal... admiring it's beauty. She felt as if she had an affinity to it...like it was somehow part of her. Yet another part of her knew that it was not her hand that held it. It was not her admiring it. It was not her that felt akin to it. It was someone else. This detached feeling reminded her of the time with... Markell.

Kit's vision snapped back into the moment and she realized that she was holding her stomach with her left arm and clasping her mouth with her right.

The moment Laren had sad the words saddle bag, Kit had turned and reached into it with her left hand. As she held his shoulder with her right hand for balance, she rummaged through the foodstuffs and travel gear with her left.

Just as he said "...maybe you should not open the bag..." she noted the real concern in his voice and steadied her hand. She turned towards him, he had half turned and was watching her.

"...Maybe just feel it....you know, through the bag" he finished.

The blink of a moment passed as they rode, her hand still in the bag, she too had a second thought about touching the thing.

Then it rolled into her open palm within the bag, and her slight fingers reflexively closed around it.

Laren chewed his lips nervously. He looked side to side seeing nothing but open space. He scanned the skies for ... something?

"Yeah, ah... I..." he scratched his head and cleared his throat. "Awe blast, sure go ahead. It's in the left saddle bag..." Laren shook his head in resignation. "If you don't mind though, I would be just as happy not seeing it. In fact, you should probably keep it in the bag. Yeah, just open the top part of the bag and peek in. Just a quick peek... That should be ok." Laren nodded at the thought.

"Better still, maybe you should just not open the bag... Maybe just feel it... you know, through the bag." He nodded again.

"You know, maybe I should just describe it to you! That should be ok, right?!"

Kossuth had slid across the sky and was was nearing the western horizon. It had spent the day behind the two riders making the journey easier for their eyes. Kossuth had danced among the passing clouds playing a game of hide and seek and was now tired and looking to rest. As it hung above the horizon it splashed a full spectrum of reds and oranges across the sky and clouds. The closer to the horizon were the deep, flaming, crimson reds and the further the sky got from the blaze it faded to orange and finally a deep blue to indigo in the east. It looked to be an ocean of liquid fire painted upon the sky canvas. Kossuth was such a dramatic artist.

Ahead lay the mountains that cradled Threshold. Both Kit and Laren knew there was still a great deal of traveling before their arrival to the nestled town.

Laren gave a chuckle. "I don't think you have to worry, things only seem to blow up in Threshold! You know what I've been thinking about that? It's only in Threshold, and it's only things that pose a threat to it! I think there's definitely something magical about that town. I think the WHOLE PLACE," Laren threw his arms out wide in a dramatic circle, "Is sentient!"

"I am not certain, but it was Levin's suggestion we did so away from the town. We should probably pay heed and consider his warning one shared for Threshold as well." Kit said in a serious tone, but one that belied she was thinking out loud, and coming to her own conclusion.

"If I do look at it though, I may want to be sitting on the ground and not on a horse. There is no telling what this thing may do to me, as it has had an obvious effect on all who have come into contact with it." she said.

"And I do not want to either blow up on, or fall off a horse." Kit said wincing, wishing she had chosen her words more carefully.

Laren's face scrunched a bit. What insight could a girl of fifteen possibly lend to this situation? True, there seemed to be a little more to her than Laren knew, but what could she tell him that Levin or Garret or Ashe couldn't?

Then again, Levin did say that she could probably help. Well, my father trusted Levin... I think... Not that I don't trust Kit either.

"Are you certain it's something that we should be looking at out here?" Laren scratched the back of his head nervously

Kit broke him from his contemplation with a start.

"Perhaps if I looked at the Eye, I could discover a way it could be used to help us?" Kit left the question hanging in the air. Laren could sense her tense behind him, and surmised that she was either uncomfortable with the idea, or with the asking of it.

Laren's tiny head bobbed as Starstepper plodded along. His eyes were fixed ahead, but he saw nothing in front of him. He kept watching in his mind the aweful vision of his mother's demise, searching for something... What? He didn't know. Perhaps something to tell him who did it, or what time it was... Anything he could pull from the vision.

Kit looked behind and saw dust and an empty road cutting through wild green grass. During their ride thus far there had been a few farm houses settled into unamed hamlets but nothing even a large as a tiny village. Xuad'Tarn and Threshold were the two largest towns along this road.

The landscape was by no means flat as the mountains lay ahead to the south. Instead the hills were rolling with outcroppings of rocks. there were no trees to break up the undulating hills but in the great distance towards the east, towards The Tortured Lands, was the occasional ruin.

The Dragonteeth Mountains ahead of the two travelers reach to great heights capping the tops with snow. The snow was a clean white and the peaks of the mountains were sharp giving the mounts their name. Nestled within those unforgiving peaks was The Valley of Mist. Within the foothills of those mountains was Threshold. Threshold was a civilization in a rough and wild garden. Threshold was this day's destination. Threshold was home.

Kit squirmed a bit behind her small halfling friend. "Um....uh, no."

After a moment of thought she continued, "Items with psychic energy are usually far less....um, usefull than that. For you to be able to see visions, speaks to the power that must be in it. I think."

Laren was about to speak when Kit unknowingly interupted. "When did you have the vision of the attack?"

Kit was quiet again for awhile, watching the rolling hills of the landscape slowly pass bye. When she spoke, it was almost in a whisper."When I was taken from my parents, they had already killed my father in front of my eyes. I can only assume they murdered my mother as well in the next room."

Laren lead the horse quietly, sensing she was going to say more.

"What happened to your mother Laren?" Kit asked so quietly, Laren almost missed it in the wind.

"Yeah, I would say Threshold is about as safe as any place for the time being." Laren's little head bobbed a bit. "I'm not even sure who is going to be looking for me, but I believe that the order does, I'm just going to have to wait to hear from one of them."

Kit sighed with relief, so much so that he felt the girls arms around him loosen in tension just a bit.

"Well, Levin seemed to know exactly who hunts me, so your words thus far have the evidence of truth. He is a man who seems to be in a position to know things." She said and quickly added, "So we should be fairly safe in Threshold then. Do you..."

Kit stopped. She didn't know how to continue, how to start talking to him about his father's enemies.

Laren pursed his lips. "No, I don't think it works quite like that really. I think you really sort of just have to know who is around."

"For example, I know that if there's something I need to know, I can usually get word within a couple of days from Garret or Elden."

Laren wondered to himself about who else might be in threshold.

"I also know that they will watch out for each other. The leaders all know what's going on with their brothers and sisters. At least I believe that they do. They seem to have eyes everywhere. I wouldn't be surprised of they have some finger wigglers," he made a mock spell-casting gesture, "who use birds for spying. I'm sure if there were any real danger on it's way, we'd know a couple days ahead of schedule."

Kit smiled to herself. "It makes my heart warm to know such a group of people could exist."

Sitting behind Laren, Kit thought to herself for a few moments, enjoying the idea of what she had been told.

"So if we should fall within the view of danger, how do we call upon them? Is that even something we can do?"

Laren scratched his head. "Well," he started. "don't quote me on any of this, but I think it's something of a.... Brotherhood, or, some sort of club." Laren inhaled deeply. "My father always dealt with people of this guild, so I have to assume I can trust them. We can trust them. He was always helping other members, and they he. I have to assume that it's a 'you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours' sort of out fit. True, he had done some disreputable things but they were all for the greater good."

Laren nodded. He seemed to be trying to explain it even to himself as he reasoned.

"I wouldn't be too afraid of it, Kit. Eldan and Garrat are both involved with them. I think that Ashe might know a few things about it to, if he's not actually a member. So far everyone that I've met who was a part has been more than accommodating."
