Title: The Ring within the Brambles
Post by: Wildfire on September 19, 2005, 10:14:00 PM
Ashe saunters into the common room of the Thornhedge Inn. It is partially occupied with various patrons all of which are intent on their own business. Sitting at the Protectorates usual table is Dale sipping an ale and reaching down to his side with a little bit of food. No one seems to notice this much less care. Ashe approaches Dale and says, "Dale, sorry I was delayed but...well, you understand. Anyway, Maal is doing fine now. If you want to go then we should go now. I've been quite anxious for something like this for a very long time. Are you ready?"

"The stones are very ancient Dale. As for who built them...I must research and reflect on that aspect." Ashe says. "Well, Threshold awaits! Y'know Macabeus, there's a stone circle in the center of town too."

"By all means Maccabeus." Ashe replies. "Dale, would you care to join us?"

"I was hoping that you would." Maccabeus replied. "I have a need to discuss some other items with you and wouldn't want to bore Dale so close to death."

He turned to Dale then and said, "Don't misunderstand, Dale, but I do have to speak to Ashe in a more private setting on the subject of our mutual patrons; it is not a conversation that I think can be carried in this common tongue, and not a topic I am allowed to share freely. I hope you understand."

"In the meantime, I'd like to see more of this place you've made your home. Could I trouble anyone for a shallow tour of this place we call Threshold?"

Ashe shakes his head out of his daze and says, "Thank you, but not right now. I need some time for personal insight. I' would like to come back though to give the details of this place more study. Perhaps tonight I'll return. How does that sound?"

"That's pretty much the extent of the grove." Maccabeus said. "This passage is the one that we took both into and out from Coryndar field; I rather suspect that it'll be grown over, if not today then soon. As I said, I think that I'll take up residence here for a time, and in so doing I'll watch for more of Zyxu's agents and will come and go by the way that we came in." He grinned at Ashe as he spoke. "I saw how you travelled through the underbrush so masterfully; I think I see the trick, but need some practice at it."

He seemed to survey the shrine and the faunt therein for a moment. "Is there anything else that I can show you?" He asked helpfully.

The earthen water flowed down Dale's throat filling him with a sense of confidence. His hands felt strong, his thoughts well founded. Dale flexed his fingers and the muscles were tight and it seemd as if he could crush anything. The wisdom of the world seemed to be within his strong grasp.

Ashe looked at him curiously, "Well, how does it feel? Why am I asking you? I should just try it!" He bent down on all fours and drank directly from the fount. Stnading up Ashe seemed to go into a blank, blinkless stare as if he were watching something from far beyond.

Dale eagerly strides to the fountain and takes a sip of Grumbar's water.   While doing so, he ponders how the god of rock and dirt can have a fountain dedicated to him.  It just doesn't seem to make sense...
Then again, Kosuth the god of fire has a fountain dedicated to him as well.  And the god of air Akadi....   The more he thought about it the more his head hurt.

The rich, amber water sprayed keenly into the air. The water almost seemed to be dirty were it not for the spectrum that was made from light passing through the liquid.

"Earth mixes with air, water, and the light of fire." Ashe remarks. "This pool is unique from the others in that peculiar way. Brothac'Nyx is the meeting point for all of the elements acting as a foundation for the others to join together. Each, of course, is no greater than any other but here you see a taste of the four as one. If you were to add the power of Mahiya, to these waters great things would happen. That power is truly infinite in life. Without Mahiya the four would be nothing more than empty...they would just be there serving no purpose."

Ashe snaps out of his reverie in speaking of the fountain. "Oh...forgive me...I do get caught up sometimes!"

Maccabeus left the Fount of Kossuth and travelled further along the Bramble Way to where the Fount of Grumbar lay.

"It's a shame we didn't try Istisha's water or Akida's, while we were in those shrines." He remarked as he trod along, playfully kicking at the lush grass, revelling in its feel upon his calloused feet. "We've time, though." He added. "I know that I at least shall sooner of later try them. This temple comforts me greatly; I feel as though I am a part of it in some way." He purposefully and playfully walked into Wolf's side as he went along, adding, "Wolf likes it too, it seems. Perhaps there are friends that he might meet hereabouts."

The Fount of Grumbar was not far and presently the trio ronded the bramble path and into the chamber. "You'll recall, Dale, that this pool was not bubbling when first we came. The Agents of Zyxu has quelled its flow. Look now, though!" He cast wide his arm, presenting the Faunt of Grumbar to his companions.

With relief, Dale finds that the only price to pay is warm fluid flames pouring down his throat filling his gut with the warmth of the fire from the sky. The soft heat extends to his arms and legs with tingling refreshment.

Ashe says asks, "Fantastic isn't it? I wonder what the others will feel like. These fountains are...like...the blood of the gods! Lead us to the next one Maccabeus...please...I must see"

Dale watches Ashe and Maccabeus with intense curiosity.   Until now, Dale has viewed the wonderful discoveries in the ring with a bit of caution.  Realizing that the two druids he was traveling with would likely cause him a great deal of trouble if they new that he was a wizard, he has been very careful not to give himself away.  Those druids of course worship and serve Mahiya.  Therefore Dale has been reluctant to drink from the fountains in case Mahiya decides to take her wrath out on him for casting magic....
Dale says to himself, "Well, I did help recover this lost temple... and I do respect nature...Well, here goes!!"
Dale dips his hand into the fiery water and consumes a great gulp of the tepid water.   After he swallows it, he looks around from Ashe to Maccabeus to the rest of the ring.  He anxiously holds his breath waiting to see if there's a price to pay....

Maccabeus felt a fool; in his zeal he hadn't considered that the various waters might have different flavors to go with their differring presentations.

He smiled, shook his head, and approached the Fount of Kossuth and drank, timidly at first, and then with greater abandon.

Maccabeus could feel the liquid fire pouring down his throat and into his belly. The warmth began to emanate from his middle and ooze to his legs, arms, and head. It was a satisfying sort of warmth. He felt as energized and bright as Kossuth at the it's zenith.

A keen wolfish grin grew on his face and his eyes gleamed. "Invorating indeed." He remarked passionately. "I am very glad to have been chosen by Mahiya and her children in this life. And for Shankharia's wisdom as well." He had always been close to his mentor in the Dale, but now he realized that he truly loved her as a cherished and revered teacher. He hoped that he would be able to return to the Dale one day, or that she would come here, so that he could thank her for her foresight and intuition.

"Shall we try Grumbar's water?" He asked impishly. He realized, of course, that he would have to go back and try Istisha's and Akida's too. He would have to ask the Guardian Bramble if it minded if he took up residence in this place. The new tatoo on his chest suggested that the Divine Four might want it that way, but the Bramble was here first, and it would do to pay it the respect that it deserved.

After taking a drink from the fiery water a look of surprise comes over his face, "Oooh...I feel warm. Not uncomfortably so. I also feel...cleansed...pure, if you take my meaning. This is different than the water at the Ring. That water was was regular water but extremely pure. This water seems to have qualities in the way of Kossuth! Try it!" Ashe seemed to have a child's gleem in his eyes and he was twitching at the fingers.

Maccabeus was obviously taken aback by Ashe's question. "Well," he said slowly. "I have no objections." He watched in anticipation as the elder reached a cupped hand into the fount's flow.

"WOW.......

Dale runs towards the fountain of fire like a little kid.  He stops a few feet away from the fountain and stares wide eyed at the various shoots of fire arcing off of the central flame.   As he realizes that it might burn him, he takes a few steps back and nearly stumbles over a root that he did not see, because he never took his eyes off the flames.

"This is the most beautiful creation I have ever seen...
I never could have even imagined something so mystical."

"I'm not reluctant to drink, only reluctant to blaspheme." Maccabeus responded. "In my ignorance I find indecision, that's all. Come on, there's still two more, and the Fount for Kossuth has to be seen to be belived."

Maccabeus led the others further along the bramble maze to the liquid fire fount, where the water spouting into the air was not water at all, but appeared to be a liquid fire.

Ashe laughs, "So many questions...I love it! As for the languages they are as different from each other as the elements are different. So they must be learned as their own. As for taking a drink I think that the four invite it! Yes they are sacred...but as long as that is respected and not abused then the pools are available to drink from. Are you reluctant to try it? There is no shame in being so. It's not everyday that one is afforded this opportunity."

Maccabeus laughed a snort chuckle. "Sorry. I didn't mean to imply that you were; it is obvious that you're not trying to hurt the bramble, but it would be kind of like if you met someone, and they started poking you in the ribs to see what held you up." He paused a moment before continuing on. "There are no earthen walls in this place. The bramble stands upon itself."

Dale moves on, not wanting to irritate two druids on their sacred ground.

Maccabeus led the way through the bramble towards the fount of Akida. "Dale," he said, as his companion tried to gently penetrate the thick vines. "I don't think the Guardian Bramble takes kindly to being poked like that. We are more or less simply going to go where the bramble allows, I think."

The sound of bubbling water was ubiquitous, especially here in the bramble passages. When they finally arrived at the Faunt of Akida, Maccabeus carefully observed the faces of his companions. The pool and the gyser that fed it were not clear but were a sapphire blue such as the sky at edge of night. The air in this chamber was particularly crisp, as it had been earlier that day. Sensibly so, Maccabeus thought, as Akadi's domain was air.

"Part of the beauty of these faunts, I think, is their simplicity, at least to the eye." Maccabeus remarked. "A pool with a tall spout. Do you think, Ashe, that the Divine Ones would be affronted if I were to drink of this water? I would not tend to think so, but I'm not as near to them as you are."

Ashe gently rubs the petals of a flower between his fingers and say, "Special meaning? Not that I'm aware. They're usually a sign of good soil though. They are also very good for healing wounds."

Dale tried as lightly as he could to spread the thorned vines aside to see beyond them. The more he tried the harder it became to probe any deeper.

Ashe looked left and right, "So to the right is Istisha and to the left is Akadi? Well, we'll follow you."

Upon being scratched Wolf stuck his head out in full extension of his neck and turned it to his left. Making some grunting sounds his leg started to kick uncontrollably. He spun so as to still be scratched but also look Maccabeus eye to eye. With an enthusiastic form of thanks Wolf began to lick Maccabeus's cheek all the while kicking his leg at the the air.

"I would very much like to learn those languages, thank you. "Maccabeus replied genially. "I would also like to learn more of these flowers; they don't grow native in my homeland."

Quote from: wildfireThe group comes to a crossing path to the left and right. "Ah...which way?"

"Well, right this way is the fount consecrated to Akadi. It's every bit as lovely as Istisha's, but - as I'm sure you can imagine - its water is a lovely shade of blue." Maccabeus trod the brabmble path lightly and scratched Wolf's rump vigorously. "He loves this." the little gnome quipped.

Dale listens to both Maccabeus and Ashe intently.   However, he tries to appear to not be very interested at all.   He looks at the stones as each one is pointed out and makes a mental note of each language.

He also takes notice of all of the trumpet blooms and begins to wonder if they are hiding anything specific.   Before he moves on with the two druids, Dale tries to clear aside some of the vines covering what he imagines to be an ancient stone wall behind the blooms.   He takes great care not to harm the plants.   As he does this he asks the druids "Do the trumpet blooms have any special meaning for Mahiya?  Are they a special symbol?"

"Breathtaking to say the least. Those defilers were trying to do more than stop the waters...trust me."

As they wolked through the north entrance Ashe says, "I would say that your right Maccabeus...the other stones would be written in the element language. Dale here is a man of the world and well travled so he says...Can you read those languages Dale? Well, if neither of you can then I'll teach you if you like. I would think that you Maccabeus would like to understand more about the writings here...and Dale just for the love of knowing it. What say you?"

The group comes to a crossing path to the left and right. "Ah...which way?"

"Have you tasted of the other waters? I'm interested in what a drink from them would feel like. I'm making a guess in my head but...well, let's find out..."

Ashe begins to walk aroud the pool and stone in the center of the circle and makes his way for the north exit. "I've never seen so many trumpetblooms..." he says.

Passing through the northern opening in the ring Ashe comes to the outer standing stone of Istisha. Ashe stops and says in his odd tongue, "May your waters cleanse the land."

He analyzes the carvings on the stones and remarks, "These carvings are incredible. The words are written in Aquan in a style speaking of an older age."

He waits for Dale and Maccabeus to catch up and points to the north opening in the thorns and says, "The others are through here, yes?"

Dale walks over to the pool.   In a very human way, he bends down, cups his hands together and takes many droughts from the invigorating water.   While drinking, he calms down about the wolf's grizzly appearance and begins to enjoy the day once again.

Ashe slowly approached Wolf. Wolf cautiously inched towards Ashe. Ashe knelt down to recieve Wolf with an extended hand. There seemed to be some 'Wolf talk' being exchanged between the two. Wolf and Ashe were soon nose to nose. Wolk began to lick Ashes face and Ashe laughed and started to pet Wolf.

"Maccabeus," Ashe said, "He is a magnificent creature! Very aware...and quite protective of you. He says that you're in every way his brother and equal...'part of the pack' as he puts it. I suspect you feel the same about him."

Ashe kisses Wolf on the top of his head followed by a playful swat. He looks at Wolf and says, "Shall we drink? Come on..." Ashe goes over to the pool and as a canine bends down on all fours and begins to drink from the pool. Wolf angles his head sideways as if bewildered and looks at Maccabeus to find an answer to an unspoken question.

"Ahh! That was good! Dale, you've got to try this water. It quite rejuvinating."

"That's Ashe." Maccabeus informed his friend. "What a beautiful meal you've brought. thank you kindly." Maccabeus approached the big gray wolf and roughly petted its shoulders.

He took the opportunity of proximity to whisper in the furry ear. "I'm hoping you could help me make some kind of decision on this fellow.  He seems ok, seems like a brother."

He then rose and directed Ashe towards the clear-water faunt, which bubbled merrily and noisily. "Best water to be had, I'd wager."

Dale looks at the wolf and sees the gore on his muzzle.   Instictively he moves away from the wolf.   As he's doing this, he notices Ashe and the wolf begin a staring match.   Not wanting to get in the way of any fur flying, Dale moves back even further...

Behind Wolf is the bloody body of a partially eaten deer. Wolf's mouth is stained with blood and he's waking from a nap.

In Wolf's own way he replies, "Yes friend...I'm back. With food I might add. The hunt was good. I have brought for us a small deer. Fast he was...he made good chase. I've taken my fill already. I recognize the scent of one who has come but the other is not as familiar. What is it?"

Wolf gets up and moves so to view Dale and Ashe. Ashe stands there looking Wolf directly in the eye knowing that this is seen as a challenge to the animal.

"You sound much like Shankharia, my preceptor back in the Dale." Maccabeus said lightly. "Not that I don't agree with you - or her - but I am rather impatient at times and would like more answers than questions. Still, I recognize that the Divine Family reveals to us what we are ready to have revealed." Maccabeus may have accepted this truth, but his tenor clearly indicated that he was not happy with it.

He walked between the standing stones of the Ring as he spoke. "There's the first of five pools over here." He indicated to Ashe and Dale. "The others are clearly devoted to Mahiya's children, so I conclude that this one must be devoted to Mahiya herself. I've drunk of this faunt; it's the most perfectly refreshing water I've ever had."

Maccabeus passed out of sight of his two companions, behind the boulders of the Ring. Dale and Ashe heard him from around those corners, saying, "Oh, hello Wolf. Back from the hunt already?"

Ashe furrows his brow and says, "Question? I didn't ask any...oh, I said that many questions will be answered. Maccabeus was wondering about the workings of the forces here."

Ashe walked over to the the nearest outside obelisk and touched it rubbing his hand over it's surface. "Maccabeus, the ways of such things will come to you through your own realizations. Although you are trained in the 'ways' it is often times through our own reflection and experience that we come to understand these relations. One's own experience is worth more than any amount of ancient writings or teachings. I could very easily tell you why the Ring of Mists is in the configuration it is in. However, your realization of this is far more valuable to you."

Ashe walked around the standing stone taking in the carvings upon it. "This stone here represents Kossuth. Odds are the one opposite to it represents Istisha." In his mystical speech he says, "Yes Maccabeus...we will talk."

"Come to think of it, I am thirsty. Where are those pools?"

"The recovery is complete." Maccabeus said softly. "I'm unclear on what trasnpired; I had thought that this was Istisha's doing, but perhaps it was Mahiya - Zebulon's name came up." He looked meaningfully at Ashe. "I couldn't hope to grasp the workings of those fine divinities, but I suppose it doesn't matter. Men such as we are effectually in the service of Mahiya and her children, not only one."

He noted that they had entered the sacred glade from a different side from the four temples. The thought of those faunts caught at his conciousness. "This isn't all of it." He said to his companions. "There's more. Would you like to see, or would you prefer to drink this in over some time? And speaking of drinking, there's a beautifully refreshing water pool over here." He walked lightly through the cool misty air that permeated the Ring towards where the pool bubbled up from below. "I'm surprisingly thirsty all of a sudden." He remarked.

Ashe looks to Maccabeus and Dale and says, "Why not?". He sits down on the soft grass and unlaces his boots. Standing up barefoot he wiggles his toes allowing them to root into the grass. "Ah, that's much better. Great idea Maccabeus."

Overhead Kossuth gave a keen warmth to the faces of the three. Dale had already begun to dry off. For him the heat was best to pull the chill from his bones.

The allure to follow the path was more than Ashe could stand. Staring down the path he says, "Let's not wait any more! I have to see it!"

The three of them walked down the path taking in the scenery around them. The path banked and turned left, then right, then left again. The walls of thorns on either side were filled with the colorful flowers and released a scent that was calming and quiet. The walls reaced up as tall as five men head to feet. The grass underfoot was soft and lush and was kind to the heels and toes.

After turning the last left, the path opened up to large glen. In front of the eager explorers was a sight of particular grandeur. Two standing stone rings one inside the other. In the middle was an intricately carved obelisk. On each side of the outer ring was another standing obelisk. They were shorter than the one in the middle but still reached high toward the open sky. At the point of where the outer stones stood was a break in the circles creating an opening to the center stone. In this glen the trumpetblooms were larger than normal and had colors even more vibrant than the ones in the opening walk.

Dale was awe-struck at what this place looked like now as compared to what he remembered. Maccabeus was glad the the glen was still in good grace. Ashe had to think to breathe since he had lost his breath.

The air was enriching and the sound of peaceful bubbling water could be heard in the distance. "In all of my most fantstic imaginings I never could have thought of this." Ashe spoke in his language, "Great Nyx and it's children, it is our honor to view your blessing. It is out honor to be of you."

Dale takes in the wondrous beauty of the trumpetblooms and smiles.   His work yesterday helped to create something profoundly beautiful.   A sense of satisfaction grows within him.   Something far more profound than anything he's ever known.   For the first time in his life, he starts to believe that good can flourish in the world.   Until now, everything good in his life has been snuffed out by greed and evil.   He is simply awestruck by the power of Mahiya.
Without much thought, he follows Maccabeus' example and removes his boots.   He tells himself that he wants his boots to dry, but he knows that he, like Maccabeus, does not want to harm the beauty of this sanctuary.

Poor bastard'll likely break down entirely by the time we get to the Ring itself. Maccabeus mused to himself. Still, he's either genuine or a magnificent actor.

"If you don't mind a moment, I'd like to remove my boots." Maccabeus requested, not really awaiting any response from either Dale nor Ashe as he plunked himself on the rich grassy carpet. He tied his boots together and slung them over his shoulder befor proceeding.

Maccabeus entered the winding pathway, now not really sure what to expect. Would this via mirror the other one? Would the path take them to where the four shrines were and then on to the Ring? He led his companions into the bramble, he as blind as they.

The brambles cleared revealing a winding pathway walled with Trumpetblooms and blanketed with grass. Ashe's eyes went as big as Grumbar and his mouth was agap. With a choked voice Ashe sniffed, "In all my years I nev...never thought I'd see something so magnificent as to rival the Valley. But here I...here I stand...shedding tears because now I have. What a gift this is...lead on Maccabeus."

Maccabeus walked into the bramble, trusting his botanical friend to accomodate him. "I regret not having come sooner." He apologized. "My ignorance was your peril."

The brambles creak and rustle, "Glad that you have returned. You may pass this way to avoid confrontation. We sense the presence of the one you call Ashe...he is familiar to us. The other presence feels like it should be known but is not. Who is the other?"

"Hello, neighbor." Maccabeus greeted the trilling warbler. He then turned cheefully to his companions and said, "This is the place." He inhaled the essence of the trumpetblooms euphorically. "Better than honeysuckle." He quipped.

Maccabeus all but buried his sharp-featured face into the bramble, and began making hissing and clicking sounds.

"Hello, Guardian of the Ring." He said to the bramble. "I have returned, and with me I bring one of those who helped us against the agents of Zyxu, and another who claims to be called Ashe Pryessant...servant and guardian of Nyx whom I call Mahiya - you may know him better than I. I would like to be able to enter and exit your expanse from this side, if I may; I fear the two-leggeds of the fields will fear me and my friend Wolf and I wish to not cause hardship upon them. Can we please enter the Ring from here?"

The three of them traveled north for just a little distance and and then the brush got very thick. True to form Ashe walked through them with out so much as snare to his cloak or a branch in his face. Maccabeus and Dale were not quite as nimble. Ashe being mindful of the other two slowed down and waited for them to clumsily pull through the forest.

The three of them soon came to a massive wall of thorns. The flowers on the thorns were of a deep red fadding to purple at the bell. Ashe's gasps, "Trumpetblooms! I've never seen so many! It's a whole wall of them!"

Birds flitted amongst the brambles. One bird came to rest on maccabeuses shoulder and began to tweet and sing.

"Well, I got my bath, whether I needed it or not!"  Dale tries really hard, not to let the jokes at his expense get to him.   How was he supposed to know that Ashe was going to make a bridge out of thin air?
Besides, I am nothing if not bold.

Ashe busts out in a fit of laughter, "That water must've been awfully cold! It comes from the mountain snow as it melts in Sythus. That was a bold move Dale...a bold move indeed. Boy I needed a good laugh! Thanks for the entertainment Dale. Come now...the Ring awaits."

The three continued their forest walk to the north to locate a back entrance to the Ring of Mists.

Quote from: wildfire...they like you...".

"What's to not like?" Maccabeus agreed.

He hung his head and snickered as the trees began to intertwine thier branches, making a bridgeway across the river. Maccabeus's preceptor had shown him similar works back in the Dale; this demonstration - and Ashe's similarities to Shankharia (both in ability and temperment) -aleviated many of the little gnome's anxiety regarding Ashe's intentions and liaisons

He climbed upon the living bridgeway and scampered across easily. It was surprisingly sturdy; he took care not to tread too harshly lest he damage his immobile brothers.

Alighting upon the opposite shore, he looked impishly at Dale and asked, "Catch anything? I'm starving!"

While Dale is crossing, and much of the way swimming, across the river Ashe taps Maccabeus on the shoulder and says, "Watch this...what I'm about to do will make you laugh...and probably infuriate Dale."

Ashe makes a few subtle gestures and speaks words that to Maccabeus sound familiar, but not exactly. The bushes begin to writhe and twist, nearby trees on the river banks begin to bend and creak towards the water. Maccabeus is reminded of the thornbrambles at the Ring in the way that they were hostile and friendly. Some of the branches gently wrap around Ashe and Maccabeus. Ashe says soothingly, "Do not fear them...they like you...". Dale on the opposite bank dripping soaking wet sees that the vegetation is moving and dancing around him. Quickly the trees and bushes on both sides knot together and start to span the river and eventually meet in the middle.

"Well," Ashe says laughing, "Let's cross!"

"While I appreciate the beauty of this forest, I must admit that I would greatly appreciate a good road right now.   This mud might not ever come off of my boots!   Besides, I kind of lke chatting with the farmers at Coryndar Fields.   Thurgin is a great guy."
Dale wonders to himself as he gets his boot stuck in the swampy muck, "How the heck did I get into this?  What's wrong with a good road anyway?   Is there something wrong with taking the direct route?"  He abruptly snaps out of his muttering as a low hanging pine branch seemingly jumps out of the forest and rakes Dale accross the forehead.
"Oww!"
As they get to the crossing spot on the fogveil, Dale looks at the river and realizes it is much to wide to jump across and there's nothing for it, but to get his feet wet.  As he wades across, he feels the water come in over the top of his boots and his companions hear him grumble, "What's wrong with a nice bridge?"

"I've never lived in a cabin." Maccabeus quipped lightly. "It seems like it would tend to isolate you from Mahiya and that's never a good thing. Especially here in this area. When I arrived in this area it seemed that Sythus was unusually fertile. Now I realize that it's the presence of the Ring that floats that wonderful scent of growth upon the air." He sniffed demonstrably, like a glutton smelling his favorite meal just nearing the table.

"You have been unusually blessed to live in this place, sir." He observed. "Thank you for your willingness to share." He grinned a rather stupid grin as though he thought he had just said something beyond clever.

"In the Dale we thank Mahiya for her bounty. For the sun and the rain, the animals and vegtables, for the caves and the rivers. Even the lightning that begets the forest fires." He clicked and clucked a few moments before begining. "Seems a far distance from grace, but grace it be."

Ashe looks back and notices the distance between him and the other two. "Oh, my! I'm sorry. How I do forget myself."

While waiting for the others to catch up he takes in his surroundings and breathes deep closing his eyes. "I feel more at home here than I do in my cabin" he says. "My friend Mercer and I used to walk for days in the forest just feeling the life of our surroundings. We'd pass through some beautiful country and wonder how we could be in anything so magnificent. It made our souls sing. How could anyone not be inspired by it we would wonder."

Ashe spoke in his odd speech again in a sort of prayer, "The grace of Nyx has been given to us. We honor our Mother-Father by embracing that grace and by giving it back with love for all that Nyx is."

"To the north you say? We can walk along the bank of the Fogveil until you think that we should cross."

Maccabeus watched intently and studied the elder's words as Ashe destroyed the medallion. "Impressive." He commented simply.

He followed Ashe as closely as he could through the thickening foliage. He watched with great interest where the elder placed his feet and how he twisted his torso as though he was dancing with the very trees and bushes. It was much to Maccabeus's surprises that he found himself fallen considerably behind Ashe.

"Hey Ashe?" He called, feeling rather Sheepish. "We seem to be falling a bit behind. Must be these infernally short legs again."

"Besides," he continued, "we should probably be banking off northward now." He gestured helpfully towards his right.

Ashe draws his gleaming, rune-carved scimitar and says,"Stepping back is a good idea" he draws the scimitar over his head with a wild look in his eyes and yells in a language only Maccabeus understands and brings the blade down upon the symbol shattering it into dust.

He spins around with the blade in his hand as if to look for another target for his fury. Maccabeus and Dale step back a little bit not knowing what will happen and Ashe seems to break out of his fury. He shakes his head as if he is clearing his mind. "Excuse me," he says, "sometimes I can get blinded by my rage. I'm okay now."

putting his scimitar back in it's sheath he matterof factly says, "Well, off to the Ring." He begins to walk towards the Fogveil. The ground gets softer and is slightly damp and the undergrowth gets thick. Dale and Maccabeus find it hard to keep up with Ashe as he walks through the dense bushes as if they're not even there.

"Just take a step back and watch the shards fly!"
Dale actualy takes more than a few steps back.   As he backs up, he positions himself behind a tall spruce tree and peers around the side of it to get a good view of Ashe's path of destruction.

Maccabues missed a step upon hearing Ashe's words. "OH! Great! I had misunderstood you to mean that destroying it would have to wait."

He unstrapped his blanket and unrolled it enough to show the vile symbol to Ashe (he carefully studied Ashe's body language, but the elder gave away no hints that he might not be quite what he suggested).

He located a fair-sized flat rock, and placed the symbol upon it, being careful to not allow the foul metal to come into contact with his flesh.

"Maal destroyed one of these things and it seemed to sap her vitality. After that I think we took to throwing them at the stones in the Ring. I really regret that now, knowing what I do today. In any event, I take it that we don't simply crush it with a random rock?"

"Given the recent events I think you and Wolf staying at the ring would be a good idea. And yes, Wolf despite being friendly, at least to you, would have the farmers nervous not to mention the livestock. I'm certain that we'll cross the river with little trouble. But now that we're out of proximity of the road It's time to destoy that symbol."

"You know what? You're right...on both counts." Maccabeus agreed, not slowing his step. "I had forgotten about the bridge at Little Threshold; there would be a river (or a marsh anyway) between here and the Ring. Also, I'm sure that we can figure it out! As of now, I'm only guessing, judging by Kossuth, I'm estimating that we can get in through this way. It's almost always better walking through the forest anyway; the roads just don't do Mahiya justice." He scrambled over rocks and fallen trees, tripping merrily through the venric forest.

"With luck, there'll be a log to cross the river. I'll be staying at the Ring for the most part, and I really feel pretty strongly that Wolf and I will create more issues than not if we have to keep traipsing through the flock, you know?"

Ashe stops and turns to Dale and Maccabeus and says, "We can all fly...it's just a matter of how we choose to do it." He winks then turns to the left side of the road and says, "So, it's here that you say we should go Maccabeus? Is it straight in or in and to the right? Wait! You said it was south of Coryndar Fields...Coryndar Fields is on the other side of the river last I heard...well, we'll figure it out."

"The spirit of my people is strong." Maccabues replied. "Besides, ignorance is my enemy (not that I've won so many of our encounters as I have lost  ); it serves you well to know your enemies."

They walked on about another few bowshots, talking as they went. "Should I then entrust this medallion that I've got to you?" He asked as he ventured off the road a towards the west. "We should be able to forge a way into the Ring from this area. We're almost on top of it now; too bad we can't fly!"

Ashe slows his step so that Maccabeus can walk without jogging. "Ah, to destroy a symbol is a wonderful thing. It takes a bit of power though. I'll show you when the time comes. To your other question, 'what is Zyxu' well that's a long story. So I'll give you the short version...no offense to your height!" Ashe laughs at his own circumstantial jest. "Zyxu is the opposite of what Zebulon is. Where Zebulon is Mahiya's champion Zyxu is the champion of that force that is not honored with a name. That evil is the void of life. As I explained to Dale it is not to be confused with death. For death is a transition of our spirit...a change. As the plant dies the remains can foster new life, so to speak. This void takes any possibilty of growth and rebirth. It feeds on the energy of flesh and spirit consuming it utterly. It is forever hungry and it never sleeps or is ever satisfied. It always wants more. That is what Zyxu is...that is what he champions."

Ashe continues walking and then says, "I hope I didn't dampen your spirits..."
Title: The Ring within the Brambles
Post by: Johan on September 25, 2005, 03:04:23 PM
"Dale's almost right." Maccabeus agreed. "The Ring is on the south side of the fields. As you are no doubt aware, the fields are west off the road and the Ring and bramble are on the south edge of the fields. I think, however, we can wend our way off the road short of Little Threshold and find a back way in. I'd like to be able to come and go without disturbing the workers in the fields, if you follow me."

Maccaeus stoped short a moment, falling a little behind the two humans. "Dale," he said, "I'm going to have to ask you to shorten your stride a bit. My little legs'll have to be whipped into a run to keep up with you." He smiled and chuckled lightly, removing the wrapped blanket from his back.

"I have one of those symbols right here. If they are as foul as you say, and I believe that they are, I'd rather not bear it back to the Ring. Perhaps we should set off the road and destroy it in a bit of isolation? I'd dearly love to see the correct way to destroy them in the event that they show up again."

He continued on before Ashe could respond. As he spoke Maccabues studied this new acquaintences, suspicion still lurked in his mind as to the intentions of these men; suspicion had kept his people alive for the past generations. "This Zyxu," he took up the conversation again. "That's a name that's been whispered around my ears of late, but I've never heard of him. Or her. Who is he? Or she?"

"Its just past Coryndar Fields.  Its not very far now."  Dale begins to walk faster toward the farm, hoping that the two druids might continue their conversation at the ring.   That way he can at least investigate around the ruins once again.   He reminds himself not to cast any spells around either of them.

Ashe nods his head up and down.

He then says, "Whatever talismans remain should be destroyed with haste. They may act as beacons to the eyes of Zyxu. As a disease spreads through a living body so to will the power of Zyxu spread through this land. Talismans such as the one you speak of will draw the disease to them spreading out as a plague will spread through a population. Please, give what symbols you have to me and I'll destroy them. You can even watch if you like. How far are we from the Ring?"

'We need must speak at some length, please." Maccabeus answered in thier kindered speech. "But alone. Will you visit me in my new home tonight?'

He then again switched back to common and apologized to Dale. "I'm sorry, Dale. I don't mean to occlude your understanding. It's just that some things that need saying need saying in proper fashion, and sometimes the correct word doesn't exist or isn't known in common." He cast a friendly smile at the bedraggled traveller.

"I had been looking to go to town to talk with that councillor fellow. I imagine, though, that you might be more the correct person to have this conversation with." He turned about on the road and the three began walking back toward the north as they spoke. "I am sure that you are welcome in the Ring. Tell me, I don't mean to completely change subjects, but what should be done with the remaining symbol of the agents of the foul one?"

"Indeed Maal and Dale did say that you stayed to further protect the Ring."

Ashe then starts to talk in the secret speech, "Perceptive you are, Maccabeus. I'm an honored agent of Zebulon and I know what it is you have done. I saw you last night guarding the Ring. I know that you basked in the light of Syrryth'Nyx calling forth its' power with unbridled passion. Zebulon embraces your spirit and I remain inspired by it. You now wear the mark that I do and The Ring is under your charge...that is the trust that is given to you for as long as you will keep it. Our strength and the strength of all will be needed soon."

Ashe returns to the common speek, "So, will you give me a tour of the newly found wonder? Methinks that Dale here is as enthusiastic as I am to see it."

Maccabeus grasped the man's forearm in greeting. "Dale and Maal must have keen knowledge of Mahiya's will then." He observed. "I had stayed only to know if more of those villianous cretins returned to further defile the Ring. It wasn't until much later that I realized what the Ring was."

"To be honest, though, I don't think it is the will of the four, nor of Mahiya herself, that the Ring become an over-crowded forum. It is, after all, among the most holy of places."

He seemed to consider his words for a moment, then hurried on. "Not that one of the bretherin would be unwelcome. Indeed, I am confident that any servant and guardian of Mahiya will be welcomed there." He smiled a broadly to his two conversants.

Ashe smiles at hearing what has over the years become his more natural language.

"I have come this way today to see something that has not been seen for centuries...The Ring of Mists. I trust you know of it being revealed? I have been waiting for many a year to see this wonderous sight. It pleases me to great extent that one of proper passion has overseen it's emergence. I salute you and all who helped. Dale and Maal told me that you stayed to take care of it and see it through to ancient glory." Ashe extends his hand out to Maccabeus in gratitude.

Maccabeus was much relieved, and startled besides, to hear the melodious cant of his brethren. No one had spoken thus to him since before Venric.

"Greetings in kind." Maccabeus replied. He reminded himself that he still needed to be cautious; this man maybe a servant of Mahiya, but yet be mischievous. "I am Maccabeus, recently arrived from the Dale of Wolves"

Cognizant of Dale's unfamiliarity with this tongue, Maccabeus switched to common for his associate's benefit. "What brings you this way?" The answer, of course was obvious, but Mac figured that the question would bear asking, if for no other reason than segue.

In truth, the little gnome was near bursting at the seams to talk with another of his own station - one who might appreciate exactly what it was that had transpired over the last day but he had to learn more first. Against his nature, he quelled the impulse to just begin relating all the details. He wished that wolf were on-hand to help him get a sense for this Ashe's disposition.

"A wolf, eh? I like wolves. Whatcha say about Zebulon and Istisha?"

Ashe seems to lose interest in anything that Dale is saying and calls out to Maccabeus in a curious language, "Greetings friend. I am a brother of the Wolf and friend to the Hawk. I take comfort from the trees and I slumber in the grass. I respect the four and honor their parent. I am Ashe Pryessant...servant and guardian of Nyx whom you might call Mahiya." . Ashe extends his bronzewood symbol from his neck so that Maccabeus can see it clearly.

Dale looks on with a sense of wonder at hearing this melodious language. Though he doesn't understand any of it the enchantment of it's liquid broge is soothing.

Ashe laughs outloud, "Well that's a great start! Yes much still remains from times of old. Some dangerous and others benign. Although one rarely knows which is which when they first find it. Much knowledge of many places was lost and forgotten over the course of wars and time. Ancient writings were either hoarded or destroyed. Yet despite the obstacles things can mysteriously return...especially when they're needed. It's as if there's an entity about them that knows things that we can't possibly know. I feel it was no accident that the Ring of Mists is once again present...it or something knows what we do not."

While talking, Ashe becomes somewhat distant. He stares out at vacantly. He continues to walk picking up a little speed and looks around him...left, right, up, down.

He stares ahead and remarks,"There's energy in the air. I can feel it. Did you see it last night? Istisha? How it moved through the sky? How a divine beam of light shot to the ground? That happened last year only more westerly and northerly. Events are in motion, Dale. We are once again in a time of Zebulon...a time of Zyxu Archeon." Ashe shakes his head side to side, "I wish that I had more answers."

Ahead on the road was a short figure. He looked wild and rough. Dale sees that it is Maccabeus.

He was a fisherman.   His ship was lost at sea during a terrible winter storm.   She always talked about him as if he was the greatest of seafaring heroes.    He was a devout follower of Istisha.   My mother made this necklace to remind her of him..." Dale picks up the seashell tied to a cord of leather around his neck and allows Ashe to look at it.

OOC: Whoa Tex! back up there a second!

Dale and Ashe head out of the Thornhedge and over the Angelhawk Bridge. To the right is a standing stone that is shaped into a fluid, undulating statue of water.Beyond that there is a stream that carves its' way through the surrounding cliff. Ashe points and says, "Through that crevice is a natural spring that is the shrine of Istisha. That there is the stone to mark it's location...which is also part of the shrine.

Stepping on to the road north you become enveloped in a canopy of trees. The birds are out chirping and flitting about tending to their business. A cool breeze pushes from behind you reminding you that further south are snow capped mountains still in the chilling grip of Venric.

Ashe says, "I agree. I love the first drops of Sythus. The release from the cold and the confines of my cabin are nice. So, where are you from, Dale?"

"Absolutely! Let's go!"
Dale stands up, straps his quarterstaff to his new baldric and begins to head outside with Ashe.   As he steps out of the inn, he takes a deep breath of freshly blooming wildflowers.   "Ahh, I love spring...
Dale walks with Ashe through town making small talk along the way, being careful to avoid any discussion that might lead to unwelcome topics like magic and wiardry.
As they make their way through Coryndar Fields, Dale makes sure to wave hello to Thurgin and company, exchanging brief pleasantries on his way to the brambles.
