Kit leaned over and spoke into Laren's ear.

"I know you want to reach your father, but we must let the horse's rest, or we will not make it to him at all." She tried to say it as nicely as she could, which was very difficult while in full gallop.

Kit shook her head, it was obvious Laren was on a mission, and it would get the horses injured.

"You're father is waiting for you, he is doing his part by staying alive to see you one last time before he passes to the next world. If you injure the horses and do not reach him, you will have failed him. Slow down and rest the horses. Give youself time to think upon what you want to say to him. Don't let this moment pass hastily, only to reget it later."

Kit choked on her own words, but squeezed him reassuringly to convey them.

Laren didn't notice and continued to ride.

Grotik and Murkin rode alongside Laren and Kit keeping pace with them. If they said anything it could not be heard over the thundering hooves. Night out on the rolling hills was dark except for the light that was cast from the Moons. The stars were displayed in a twinkling cascade of light that stretched across the sky. The night air sweeping from the mountains behind bit shrewdly at times but there was nothing that would stop the horses from running forth. The peace of the night was never fully realized due to the urgency of recent events. Xuad'Tarn lay north on the road and was usually a two days ride. With the speed of the horses it seemed that the destination was arrive much sooner.

Some minutes passed and the horses, although swift and strong, needed to rest for a bit. They were frothing at the mouth giving subtle signs of discomfort. Murkin waved his arm to Laren to slow up his horse and pull over.

Kit was quiet as she rode behind Laren on Star-Sprinter's back. The excitement of the sudden change in events had pushed her sleep away.

She was full of dozens of questions for Laren, but chose to keep quiet. She respected secrets and was wise enough to know the wisdom of keeping them that way.

As soon as they were from the outer limits of Threshold, Laren had pushed the very willing Star-sprinter hard. Once beyond the outlying farms and houses though he slowed to a trot, using the moon to guide them along the road.

Kit found herself warm enough, the little halfling generated more heat than her and the horse combined. She continued to stay quiet, sensing that laren was lost in his own thoughts.

"I think the questions that I have are something that I shall have to answer for myself." Laren turns to go. "Oh, and thanks. I've come to far to just forget. I want to know what happened." Laren fingered his father's ring as he left.

Garret and Eldan pull Laren away from the group. Talking in a whisper Garret says, "Laren, you now have your fathers' ring. You can either accept the charge that comes with that or walk away. Whatever you choose is, of course, up to you. Both of us would like to see you join the Hawks. Being in the company could lead you to the answer of the mystery surrounding your father demise...and those involved with it. If you choose not to go with it you'll still have a place in our 'family'. Give your father our love...he was like our brother. We'll be out of town for a few days on business. Be careful and may Sardior's luck pass to you."

The tone in Garret's voice was quite serious and seemed out of place coming from the normally jovial Halfling. Tonight his look was sullen and dark.

Garret walks to Kit and escorts her away from the group. He looks up to her and quietly says, "Kit, there's a reason beyond circumstance that your going. There is suspicion surrounding this crimson 'Eye'. What we suspect we can't tell you in order to be free of any preconcieved notions. However, you can lend insight to it. Oh, and watch after Laren. His father is dying and he might be given to blind emotion...as anyone probably would be. We'll see you in a few days. Luck of Sardior..."

Garret turns back, "Laren, any questions we can try to answer?"

"I'm not sure I know anything anymore," Laren said rubbing his temples. "I suppose we should be on our way." Laren turns to leave.
