EPISODE 5: A PASSING

WILDFIRE

OOC: It has been decided that Session 5 with Laren and Kit will be done as an ICD. When it is finished it will be added to the rest of the Logs that have been kept.

Threshold Session 5 - A Passing

Duthash Albyr Arkus  Valley Year 237 (May 4)

After discussing future courses of action at Jarmok's cabin, the two of you decide to get some sleep. The music that was once echoing through Threshold has already gone to rest. The air is now filled with the chirping of the peepers that is signature to the full life of the Sythus season.  You crest the turn down the hill that that leads into the town proper. From where you stand you can see the glowing lantern lights on the Rosewalk and the Wolfsong. The Spike of Fire burns ever bright on the southern end of the The Foot. The river of fire that stretches from the tower into the sky emits a low rumble that you can almost feel. There are a few house lanterns still lit but most have been snuffed for the night. The smell of young flowers dances in the light breeze and brings memories of innocent times.

Laren, you think to yourself, 'This young girl has more things in her head than I want to know about. I never would have guessed that that she was so fogged out. Stands to reason, she's a teenage girl...they're not the stablest of creatures!'

Kit while enjoying the peaceful walk back you look down at Laren and think, 'I wonder if Laren thinks I'm loony? I'm not loony, I'm just...' the thought becomes something that you dare not finish.

As you draw closer to the Thornhedge you see four short cloaked figures standing at the fork that the Inn spearheads. Two of the figures approach and reveal themselves. It's Garret and Eldan, the twin halflings that you've befriended. They draw closer and Garret says, "Laren, Kit, lovely evening isn't it?"

Garret lifts up his right hand revealing the steel ring around his finger and looks to you Laren and says, "Laren, through our Order we've found your Father. He's got little time and he carries an object of great importance, the jewel that you spoke of. He made it as far north as Xuad'Tarn but could not travel any further, h...he's...dying."

Garret looked away and wipes a tear from his eye. "Eldan and I have prepared a horse for your travel. He's a special speedy breed that Suath raises for his stables. This is Suath's way of thanking you for helping him with the rats. Please bring it back to him in safety. His name is Razrin'Uthriniar, which means 'Star-Sprinter' and he answers to both names."

"You'll find your father in the Temple of Jeweled Light, the holy house of Sardior, in Xuad'Tarn. It should take you about a day. There are others of our Order in the Temple looking out for your father. It is a mystery as to what strikes his health. Kit, I ask that you go with him for safety, we know not where our enemies are. When you get the Eye bring it here and we'll pass it on and out of reach of those that seek it. There are foul plots surrounding this Eye. In time they may show themselves.  Traveling with you will be Grotik and Murkin."

The two other short cloaked figures step forward and pull back their hoods to reveal their faces. You see that they have slightly sunken eyes and a reddish skin. Their hair is black and wild. They appear to be goblins! One of them has a scar stretching from ear to mouth. He is the first to offer his hand and says in gravely voice, "Are you ready to ride? We be goin' to the north town with you." He lifts his hand to reveal his hawk ring. "So you know tha you can trus' us."

Matt and Dray,

since this is actually a game session do you think it should be moved to the "Threshold Game Log" chapter?

"Farewell my friends." Levin said and slapped Starsprinter on the hindquarters. Before they knew it Laren and Kit were out of the town and racing South across the countryside back to Threshold. Both were different than when they had first arrived this roadside town of Xuad'Tarn.

Kit smiled at the lovely ring and placed it on her forefinger of her left hand.

Levin escorted the two to their horse and looked around to see who was on the street. Levin looked at the two travelers once again and said, "You two be careful...eyes are always watching...but we're watching too. Oh Kit, here..." Levin reached into another pouch and pulled out a ring, "you might need this someday."

The ring was made of steel and had a relief image of a hawk in flight on the top. The relief image was actually an outline with a razor edge and was extremely sharp.

Kit thought Levin was a man of many words that came at you in reckless abandon.

"No thanks Laren,  that healing potion of Levin's did wonders. I am okay. Let's leave this place."

With that, she took her things from him and her way to the door.

Laren accepts the vials with absoultely no intentions of using them. Perhaps Ashe would like them. His distaste for magic in general was beginning to grow...

He offered Levin only a nod as he settled his neves back into his slightly grumpy and pensive mood. 'Too bad these things weren't whiskey' he thought as he dropped the vials into a secret pocket on his small cloak.

Laren offered Kit his arm. "You'll forgive me if I don't bother to ask what just happened..."

As Levin stepped away, Kit stared blankly at Laren with the two vials held aloft in her hands.

She blinked.

"Kit, Laren's gotten your things together and Starprinter is outside waiting to run. Remember what I said about those things okay?" Levin helps her to stand up.

Stnading in front of both Laren and Kit, Levin says, "Now, you two ride on. Starsprinter is more than capable of handling the distance. You'll have to stop and water him but for the most part it should be a non-stop journey. Laren, be very careful. You'll here from me through Garret and Eldan in time. Kit, Don't let revenge cloud you judgement...A sea captain once told me that it's good to keep an even keel." Levin reaches into a puch and pulls out four vials. He extends two to Laren and two to Kit. All of the vials appear to be the same dark blue color as the vial just consumed by Kit. "Take these. Use them sparingly. You can take them in small doses or all at once depending on the severity of things. Good luck my friends, may Sardior watch over you."

The recognition of the taste in her mouth brought Kit to abrupt alertness, the memory of it placing her at another time and another place. With wild eyes she, for but a moment, scanned the entire room for Drakyr. Upon seeing Levin's calm face above her she quickly remembered what had happened, and realized what Levin must have given her.

"I um...". She looked back and forth from Laren to Levin, not sure what to say. As she did, she felt the swelling wear her head had hit the table diminish to nothing. The pain, that had been all consuming throughout her mind, also vanished as quickly.

Levin looked over to the stairs wide eyed and just couldn't help but smirk at the the little fellow flailing down the stairs. Then oberving Laren's nonchalant recovery he laughed outloud. "Oh Laren you truly are your father's son!"

Laren came rushing down the stairs carrying his pack and hers. He lost his footing (even with a 20 dex!) and tumbled down the stairs.

"bloody! Son of a! BACK! ELBOW! SHOULDER!"

He landed in an unceremonious heap at the bottom of the stairs. He pushed himself up and swept the room with a glare... No one met his gaze, but he could tell by the slightly bouncing shoulders the everyone had seen... How he loved to make people laugh... No matter, no time.

"Alright, I've got everything unless there's still something where I wouldn't expect up there... Oh, Kit you're awake! Are you alright?"

Laren scurried up the stairs to get his and Kit's things.

Kit started to blink her eyes and rub her head. As she started to clear away her bloody vision she realized exactly what it was she was wiping away. "Kit, you'll be okay. Let the water do its' work and in a few minutes you'll feel as good as new. What happened to you?"

"No. Your travel can't wait Laren. You must leave as soon as possible. You may have already gotten the attention of...them. Kit will come around in just a little bit. Go get your things. By the time you get back down Kit will be okay. Your horses will be ready for you outside with the stable hands. You must trust me Laren, GO!" Levin said sternly.

Laren fumbles the vile a bit, but manages to get the contents into her mouth... He looks around for a safe place to put the empty vial, ultimaltely deciding that it doesn't matter where it goes and just drops it...

"Kit... Kit...?" He gently pats her cheek. "We need to get her to a bed or something... Our travel will have to wait..."

Levin, with a flashing quickness, instead of grabbing the water pulls out a vial of dark blue liquid and offers it to Laren. "It's a special healing water Laren. Pour it down her throat...NOW!"

Laren looks to the innkeeper and says, "See to it that no one comes down those stairs or in the door!!"

Laren jumped from his seat, knocking it over. He started to go to Kit's aid, but realized he didn't know what to do... He stammered over a few half words before he decided to roll her onto her back and press a napkin against the gash on her forehead.

"Leven, hand me that water!" Laren stretched an arm out pointing to a glass of water on the table.

Levin's words were more than she could take in at once.

Kit closed her eyes and swallowed hard. Her clasped hands on her lap tightened until her knuckles turned white. 'He will continue to hunt me everywhere, he will harm everyone I shall ever learn to care for,', she thought.

She opened her eyes and looked at Levin standing across from her.

"I..."

A tear unbidden, escaped, and took flight down and off her right cheek. But before the small drop of water shattered upon the cloth of her skirt, the emotion that summoned it, fear, had been replaced. Replaced by shame and anger of her own reaction. For she had been weary of the fear of him. After the events of the past days, she had become very forthright in her decision not to be. How, this tear was a betrayal to that decision.

Angered, the full strength of the Wilder erupted within her and into full-front of her mind.

"I am done running!" she almost shouted to know one in particular.

The unforgiving and complete anger which hard erupted so quickly from its hiding, now threatened to consume her. Unleashed like in Pappy's Barn those many weeks ago, it had no seen enemy, no target for its wrath. Too late, Kit realized she was losing control.

'I can't lose it here, I will lose Laren's friendship and Levin's trust,'. she thought as she tried to regain it. 'Too many here would remember,' she thought now starting to panic. 'They would remember what they saw.'

Her stream of thoughts became fragmented as the tentative grasp to lose cohesion, she turned inward trying to push the psychic violence back into its prison within her mind.

Laren watched as Kit tightly closed her eyes and shook, no idea of the battle taking place within her. One that she was losing.

'I...I can't stop...I have no where too...'? Her intellect gave, and in one last desperate act she did the only thing she could do. She turned it upon herself.

Laren and Levin watched in horror as the tears gushing from Kit's eyes turned red. Without warning, her body lurched violently forward, slamming her head into the table. Unconscious, her body started to slide off on a path to crashing on the floor.

"Please understand Kit that my extensive connections often times deal with unsavory people. My ambition is to undermine them or at least exploit them to the best of my advantage. Occasionally they ask favors that I pretend to entertain but in reality I thwart their sinister attempts. Sometimes my 'clients' know this sometimes they don't. Do not be so trusting to think that the Order of the Hawk is the only guild to have been hired to search for you. You're just lucky we found you first. Believe me, I knew who you were before you introduced yourself. The eyes of evil looking for you are from the Swamp of Seers. However, the eyes of protection are also watching. The search is mostly in the City-States. The man asking for you goes by the name of Drakyr. I assume you know this man?"

Without skipping a beat after Levin spoke, Kit, who had stopped reaching for the bacon, spoke to Levin in a most serious tone.

"Can you tell me any more of the eyes watching me Levin? I need to prepare and any information would be helpful."

She remained seated, but placed her quivering hands in her lap to hide them.

"Well, just as long as YOU don't explode you'll be okay. I get the feeling that the times will be become a whole lot stranger Laren. I've seen things in my lifeti....ah, never you mind. Trust me when I say that Threshold is a special place...and very much worth fighting for. Well, shall I walk you to your horse? Or can you see your way to it yourselves?" Levin asks.

"Aye that would be wise. Threshold should keep you out of the way from certain dangers...at least a while. Myself, I must be departing. I have much business to attend to. I do wish that I could go with you you two. But a Guildmasters work is never done...especially this guildmaster." Levin says.

Levin stands up from the table, "Your horse, Starsprinter, waits in the stable. Kit, fair thee well and watch your back...there are eyes watching for you. Laren, mind the wisdom of Garret and Eldan. Save blood, they are your uncles in every way. Learn from them. Your fathers ring is now yours, make him proud. Any questions...either of you?"

Laren turned to levin, "Well, we should probably be going soon after Kit is able to eat."

Suddenly it dawned on Kit that her little friend had no idea of her abilities. As many images re-ran in her mind of the past many days, not one revealed her Seer talent to him.

The only thing the memories revealed was that Laren was scared by the effect her talents created.

"I um...." she bit her lip, a bit taken aback. 'He may get mad at me, he may think me a monster!' she suddenly thought with fear.

"I told Levin here..." she looked at Levin, worried that he may immediately deny the lie coming from her mouth, the one she couldn't stop. "...that I am from a village near the Swamp of Seers."

She looked at Levin nervously a moment and continued. "Because of the closeness of the place, many of us live with this psychic residue each day. We have learned to recognize it, sort of like how Ashe recognizes an herb or plant for one of his remedies." As she lied, she became more confident with the explanation.

"If that gem has a psychic residue, I may be able to identify what purpose it serves," she said, almost smiling at her clever little story.

Laren's eyes narrowed a bit and his fork stopped halfway to his mouth...

He blinked at his for full of eggs.

"Wait a second." he shook his head and said, "I don't mean to sound rude here... you'll have to forgive my ignorance... WHY do you know things about this?" Laren looked at Kit puzzled.

Kit had listened attentively to Laren as he described his dreams in vivid detail. She placed a hand on his shoulder when he had mentioned his mother's murder.

After he had finished, she took a moment for him to come out of the reverie and said, "Dreams are mysterious, but yours speak to what could be true images of reality. If this gem truly has psychic residue as Levin states, then these very well could be prophetic visions or reflections of the past. I will help you Laren in any way I can," she stated as she gently squeezed his shoulder in assurance.

"To understand the dreams, we first need to understand the gem. I will do as Levin requests, I will look at it as soon as we are clear of this place."

Although her words were spoken confidently, Laren noticed her hand shook as she reached for the meal offered.

Laren stopped leaning back in the chair and leaned over the table, put an elbow on the table and plopped his head in his hand.  "Oh, just jumbled images... I saw Crimson kill my mother... Then I saw some rails leading into a cave, which we traveled into the next day, (You remember?)... I saw the broken down wagon outside... Crimson reaching for me... and then last night, as I drifted into sleep I could see visions dancing before me...blurry and elusive. Memories that were mine and some that weren't. I could see places that seemed familiar but that I had never been to. Faces would break through the smokey air and soon fade out. Voices, deep and forbidding, would fill my ears with whispers speaking in strange tongues.

I could see a land rich and beautiful with mountains beyond and river of silver waters cutting through rich grasses and trees. As I floated beyond I could see villages with grand and majestic towers reaching for the stars. As I came closer to the ground the could see fires and sparks in a myriad of colors. I could hear death cries and battle screams. Smoke began to fill the air and great towers were crumbling in dreadful sorrow. I could then see a brilliant flash of light and hellfire rolled towards me. The heat was getting intense the light was blinding and then... I woke up soaked in sweat."

Laren took a bite of bacon.

Levin pushed a large plate of meats, cheeses and hard eggs to Kit and said, "Kit, I believe, you can offer some insight to the gem that Levin carries. Although I strongly suggest that you analyze it away from here. Kit, be very mindful when you do touch it for it has what I would call a 'psychic residue'. It affected Alton in a way that he could see events ahead of time and from the past, at least that's what he told me."

Kit sat gently down on an empty chair, tucking the length of her skirt under her legs.

"How are you faring this morning Laren. Is there anything I can do?"

Laren had less trouble than usuall today making himself not stare at Kit, although he did allow himself a deep inhale of her scent. Under different circumstances, it would have been very intoxicating.

"Good morning Kit," Laren said. He added with concern, "How are you feeling?"

Kit, even with her hair still damp from the bath, felt glorious. The scented oils and warm bath exactly what she needed to clean away the toil and concerns of the past few days. She had already noted where Levin and Laren sat and ate breakfast. But as she stepped into the tavern of the Inn, she performed her usual double check of the room and its occupants.

With only the usual stares at curves from a couple of the men, she met no glares of hate. She sighed in relief. Ever since she had left Threshold she had felt uncomfortable, and was amazed to feel a longing to return to the safety of her new home.

She approached Levin's table timidly, not sure of how Laren would be feeling this first morning.

Levin looked at him with a smile and said, "So be it Laren. I'll trust you in this matter. If that's what you feel is right then I'll put my faith in you as I have with your father so many times in the past. There's much of him in you that I see so clearly now. Oh, here comes Kit."

Kit decended the stairs in her traveling clothes and took in the sights of the morning activity in the Screaming Eagle Inn.

Laren looked a little confused by the part about Kit helping him to understand and silently wondered if session 5 just grew in the number of necessary posts... But he would not be swayed.

"I'm clear that this it will not be necessary for me to go, but you must understand. This burden was my father's only parting gift, aside from the bloodhook. I'll not have his mistakes handled by anyone else. Rest assured, I will defer to your wisdom in everything regarding it's fate, but my hand will be the last to touch it. Your help is most welcomed if these terms are agreeable. If they are not, I'll have to find another path."

Laren's facade sofened quite a bit. "I do not mean to be terse, but I'd never sleep again without concrete evidence that this is no longer a threat. It may not mean much in the long run, but my name is associated with this bauble. I must make certain my name is untarnished in the end."

Laren sighed and a look of near defeat spread on his face. "It is not a lack of faith in you I have, but I can have no more regrets over my head."

"You're brave to retain this gem. At this point I don't think it'll be required for you to carry to item to it's destination. All that needs be done so far by you is to hold onto it until it is sent for. I don't know when that'll be but you must be careful. Crimson is still out there and who knows what she might be allied with. This is but one of many things happening right now Laren but it is no less important. Your play in this, by your will or not, has become critical. Unless you have any further questions we should keep this matter hushed to outside ears. I wait now for Kit so that I might say good bye. Speaking of Kit, she might be able to help you understand this gem that you hold."

Laren thinks for a moment, his face betraying nothing. Appearing to be musing to himself he said, "Big plans there are surrounding this thing, and with my father dead, I know no one involved." *Sigh* "Big plans, all because of a small rock. Big plans set into motion by the actions of a small man. Big plans which will spin epic tales in the even of failure, my father being the cause."

Laren went quite for another moment, and finally shook his head.

"I'll not have your men fail. I'll not have my father be the cause of cataclysmic events. No, I think it will be me who brings this thing to it's final resting place. When your men are ready, and your plans in place, send for me and I will come. They can accompany me, but I will carry the gem to your goal."

OOC: Kit is probably drying off at this point.

Levin continues, "That jewel you have is, as you know, not an ordinary gem. It has survived it's psionic creator carrying with it certain powers. Right now it's being sought after ultimately by whom I don't yet know. I have some ideas on what to do with it but for your protection I can't tell you. What I need from you is time to make contact with some associates so that it can be handled...properly. I ask that you hold onto it for a while more. When all of my game pieces are in place I'll send someone to come and retrieve it. Garret and Eldan will make contact with you when all is in order. What say you?"

Kit moved to the edge of the tub, concealing her naked form. Although the voice sounded like a young girls, she still felt self-conscious.

"That sounds lovely Miss, I would like your favorite please."

As the knob jiggled she quickly remembered of locking it and inwardly scolded herself for her absent mindedness.

"One moment" Kit said as she reluctantly left the warm water of the bath, gingerly stepped over the side, and walked over to the door. She didn't bother with the one towel that rested near the fireplace. She wanted it dry and warm for later.

She turned the key in the door, turned the knob and cracked the door open. Wide enough so she could see out.

After the turbulence of the last day The bath felt warm and relaxing. If allowed Kit to fade away into bliss. She started to think of the sweet dreams she had of younger, more innocent days back home. A pleasant smile formed on her face for no one could touch or corrupt the pleasant thoughts of her past...despite the horror she tried to escape. he at least had those memories to carry her through whatever she might face in the future.

There was a knock at the door. "Miss, is there anything that you need? I have some scented oils here that you might like. My favorite reminds me of a soft rain in Brak (summer)"

Kit slowly sat up in the bed, wiping away the sleep from her eyes. After a few moments, the fact that someone had spoken to her through the door caught up to her. As she replayed the moment in her mind, she realized she had no idea what the had been said and made her way to the door.

Beyond the threshold was a simple brown cloth robe, folded nealty and placed in front of the door. She looked down each path of the corridor but the provider of the robe was long gone. Down the hall there appeared to be a bit of steam coming through the top of a doorway.

'Ah, a bath. Very nice.' she thought and picked up the robe.

Closing the door, she took off the clothes she had slept in and slipped into the clean robe, which was welcoming in its soft warmth.

The hard horseback riding from the past day had made her sore in places she wouldn't mention in mixed company. The thought of a warm bath was an exquisite one.

She left her bedroom and made her way to the bath. 'I so hope that it is a full-sized tub,' she thought with a smile as she walked quietly barefoot down the corridor. 'I will slip in, fall asleep, and return to my gallant friend.'

OOC: this takes place at the same time Laren goes to sleep

Kit had walked into her room utterly spent in every way. She was eager to get some sleep to put the last day and one half behind her. Somehow sleep made things better if only for a little while.

The memories of her parents hit her with unforgiving force. She missed them in a way that she hadn't felt for a while. Seeing Laren with his Dad for the last time was a painful reminder of what she would never have again. Her heart was heavy as were her eyelids. She made herself ready for bed and laid down. She didn't even realize that as her head touched upon the pillow she was already in sweet slumber...

The lake was shining and clear. The flowers were stretched across the field in a cornucopia of colors. Kit's smile went into a full bellied laugh watching him walk across the log and then fall into a shallow puddle of mud. He began to chuckle too. The feeling of innocent love swept through her and she knew that she was as happy as she had ever been.

He picked Kit up and gave her a piggy-back so that her dress and shoes wouldn't get ruined by walking through the wet and dirty streets. He lifted and carried her with ease and even made the trip fun by spinning around and making loud, yodleing sounds. They arrived at her house and he set her down in the threshold of the door. Kit hugged him for his chivalry and he bent down to kiss her and...

Kit could hear a knock at the door. "Miss, I've drawn a warm bath for you if you like. It's down the hall. No one will disturb you if you should go in. If you like I have a robe here for you to wear."

Laren sat up, and wiped his brow. "Com..." Laren stopped as he realized he was still in his shorts. "Ah, why don't you just leave it by the door? I'll pick it up momentarily..."

He sat on the edge of the bed and looked at the floor for a moment. With a deep sigh, he pushed off of the bed. His feet hit the floor with a soft thud.

He walked over to the wash bowl and spashed some cold water on his face. He let the water drip from his face back into the bowl as his stared at his reflection in the water. "So what now?" He asked himself. His reflection stared back as if mocking him, telling him that he knew what must be done. "Alright, alright..." he said standing up straight and shaking his head like a wet dog.

He pulled his clothes on, gathered his belongings and headed for the door thinking "I really should make the bed... feh."

As Laren drifted into sleep he could see visions dancing before him...blurry and elusive. Memories that were his and some that weren't. He could see places that seemed familiar but that he had never been to. Faces would break through the smokey air and soon fade out. Voices, deep and forbidding, would fill his ears with whispers speaking in strange tongues.

He could see a land rich and beautiful with mountains beyond and river of silver waters cutting through rich grasses and trees. As he floated beyond he could see villages with grand and majestic towers reaching for the stars. As he came closer to the ground the could see fires and sparks in a myriad of colors. He could hear death cries and battle screams. Smoke began to fill the air and great towers were crumbling in dreadful sorrow. Laren could then see a brilliant flash of light and hellfire rolled towards him. The heat was getting intense the light was blinding and then...

A knock at the door. "Sir, I've prepared a breakfast for you if you would would like it." a meek girly voice said from behind the door. Laren opens his eyes ans sees the mirror across the room is reflecting the morning sun into his face and that he is frighfully hot under the thick covers.

Levin leads them to the door and opens it quietly. The guards that were once on the street have left and there are a few people on the street making way. Levin looks back and says, "If you please, come with me."

He leads Laren and kit down the road a short ways. A cool wind was coming off of the mountains to the south and the ahead the sign to the Screaming Eagle Inn could be heard creaking in the early hours. Levin opens the door to the inn so Kit and laren could pass by. Upon entering the inn laren and Kit could feel the heat of a fresh fire chasing away the chill of the night air. It was cozy and warm. The heat enforced to the two just how tired they were. Laren wondered if he would ever get to sleep after what had just happened. There was one person attending the daily preparations for the day at the inn. It was a man getting on in age but still with a sturdy frame.

He approaches the three newcomers. "Good sir, the rooms are ready." Levin nods silently and turns to Laren and Kit, "old man Karek here will be sure to make your stay here comfortable and safe. Now please, get some rest. Both of you have earned it. I'll see you before you leave."

with a quick inhale, he said "But, now is not the time for talk... Now is time to saw logs."

Kit slowly lowered herself and kneeled in front of her friend. She only hoped she had the strength to get back up.

"When I fled to Threshold, I too was running away from trouble. The hunters that seek me will stop at nothing to have me killed. They will kill any who stand in their way..." Kit paused a moment.

Raw emotion was having its way with her, she barely contained it. Her only comforting thought was that in her state of utter exhaustion, her innate power was infinitely weakened. 'At least no havoc could be created from it,' she thought.

She continued, "they will also kill all who may have what I have. The knowledge that could expose them."

Laren didn't miss the quick flash of malice that passed Kit's face.

"Laren, the question isn't where will we hide." Kit said, the malice now readily apparent. "The question is, where will we prepare for their arrival." She stared at Laren with a state of determination and anger that was beyond her years. Laren realized that he hadn't taken a breath the entire moment. When she she finally averted her gaze, he took a nervous inhale of air.

As she wearily got up from the floor she said, "I tire of running Laren. We will rest. Then I think it is time we talk to the Protecterate and discuss what needs to be done."

There was a fire in her eyes that Laren had never seen. The sharing of his fathers' passing pushed her beyond the grief.

The girl who stood before him was bent on revenge.

Laren didn't hesitate to reply. His face hung in a stoney scowl. Exhaustion bearly visible. "We'll be here only a little while. Long enough to bathe and rest. Please have our horses ready before sunrise."

Laren turned to Kit. "Rest now. These men will take care of you."Tomorrow we ride again. I worry that you came..." Laren hung his head.

"Trouble will forever be on my heels... If the wrong people have seen you with me..." Laren's voice trailed off.

Levin quietly placed his hand on Kit's shoulder; for his comfort and hers. He whispered something in elvish almost too quiet to be heard. The twinkling reflections of the gems grew brighter as Kossuth started to cross into the large window opposite the altar. The temple was eerily quiet like the ocean after a ship that has just passed below into the watery abyss.

Holding the gem Laren could see his fathers face in peace and contentment. Alton was soon joined by a luminous figure and Laren could see his mother. Though her body was of misty quality her face was distinct. She raised a wispy hand and waved and smiled at Laren. Alton, also of similar form, floated to meet her. The two of them embraced as one and then disappeared from Laren's sight.

A bright flash overwhelmed Laren's mind and he could see his fathers friend, Copper, a bar tender at his father's favorite tavern 'The Half-Pint', being held by the arms by two shadowed men. Copper was bloodied and bruised and had a dagger to his throat. A soft female voice said evenly, "All of my roads have led me here to this bar. He didn't have it after he left here. So my conclusion is that you've hid it somewhere else. Now where did you put it? Tell me and I'll let you live." Copper rights himself as best as he can and says, "What good is the word of a traitor? I'll tell you nothing!" Without hesitation she thrusts the dagger into Copper's throat letting him choke on his own blood. The two dark assassins  snickered with excitement and let him slump to the ground. "Leave his ring and his hook. Let the hunters know that they are now hunted." the voice said. The flash came again and Laren could see his fathers body in its' death sleep.

Levin says, "Laren, your father was a good man. I'll miss him much. I know your travels have you weary and your stomachs empty. I've arranged rooms for you to take some rest at The Screaming Eagle Inn. Both of you, of course, can stay in the temple as long as you like. Be warned though, the mind can play tricks when it desperately needs time away...rest is advised."

Laren gripped his father hoping that it was all a dream, hoping that it was not real. He could feel the strength of his father start to wane. His breath became dim and his arm's began to slowly pull away. "Yes Laren...there are...always......dreams...."

Alton's life left him in quiet dignity. Laren became painfully aware that he felt more alone than ever. There was an emptiness that was too big to imagine. The tears running down his face captured many feelings for which there were no words.

Laren stared off into the darkness that surrounded him.  He had known this was coming, but he didn't know his taking the stone away would end it all. He felt a quick pang of anger toward his father for having told him.

He breathed deeply and exhaled slowly. "I had always thought I'd get myself killed before you would." He leaned forward and grabbed his father in a hug.

"I'll see you again I'm certain," Laren said as he released Alton. "Until then, I can always dream." And somehow he knew that he would.

Laren reached for the damned Gem stone, a tear streaming down his hairless cheek.

"That would be a good idea methinks. This thing is pretty sharp and should be handled carefully." Alton puts the bloodhook on the floor lengthwise so that Laren can pick it up. These are designed so that if you miss it will come back to you. If you hit then blood keeps flowing so long as it's in the victim. You can use it to climb too."

Alton reaches into another pouch and pulls out a fist sized blue crystal. The crystal had many facets and a faint glow at it's heart. Immediately laren knew what it was...The Eye of Portence. The tingling that Kit felt earlier was now overwhelming. She knew this was no ordinary crystal.

Alton holds the Eye with both hands. He says, "This is the trouble of it all my son. I ask that you take its charge and bring it to Threshold. Levin will send someone to fetch it. This thing is what has actually kept me alive since I was...defiled. Odd how something can be the cause of your sin and salvation at the same time. You must take it now and worry not about me. You rode down here with Laren...You're a good friend to him. A pretty one at that...though you look tired...and sad." Alton's spirits seemed to uplift talking to Laren and Kit. His voice didn't sound so weary and faint.

"Laren, I have something here of mine that I think you should have." Alton reaches into a large pouch next to his bed and undraws the tie strings. "Every brother and sister of the Order of the Hawk gets what's called a bloodhook." He pulls out this daggerlike blade that is hooked at the ends so that the hooks follow each other in a spin. "It's yours now Laren...I can't teach you the skill of it but there are others in Threshold who can."

Laren took a deep breath and said "Leave the past in the past dad. All we have is now, and it's slipping away while we talk about regret."

Laren dropped his gaze to the floor for a second. He wondered if he should tell his father about the visions. Should he say that he already knew his mother was gone? That he saw it happen? As he decided not to, he lifted his head to look at his father again.

Laren could see the old sparkle in his father's eye, now fading but there nonetheless. There was something else there too, but Laren couldn't quite put his finger on it. It was as if his father knew something Laren was hiding. Laren told himself that his father couldn't know about the visions. Unless of course his father was having them too!

Laren shook his head briskly, telling himself he was just tired and being silly.

"You don't have to worry about me. I can take care of myself for the most part, and I've got a good group of friends for the rest." Laren stood. "This is Kit, one of the group. She kept me company on the ride. I should have introduced you already. You'll have to pardon my manners. We've both been awake for quite some time now."

Alton raises his frail hand and puts it to Laren's cheek. He taps him gently and says, "You remind me so much of your mother. They got to her you know. Soon...very soon I will see her again. I couldn't protect her. I could protect you though. She would have wanted it that way. She loved you so much...still does methinks. After I left you in Kurr I was so worried about you. I knew that you'd be safe in Threshold though."

Alton sits up laboredly and grabs a mug next to his bed and takes a drink. "I never meant for any of this to happen. I did what I could to fix it but it was too late. I didn't know it would lead to your mother's..." Alton choked on his words. "Or put you in the dangers way. I'm so sorry Laren. You're too young to..." Alton became short of breath and lied back down.

"Now I fear that you'll have to deal with my mess. Do you still have my Hawk ring?"

During the hushed conversation Kit had a strange sense. Some feeling from her past came back upon her. It was a tingling she felt in the Swamp of Seers. It reminded her of an energy that was all about in the murky swamp but also as elusive as air. This tingle, however, was much more powerful and brought about dark memories...memories of them. Between the scene before her and the thoughts within, Kit had no release except for the tears that continued to flow from her eyes. She somehow found the strength to keep from bursting out in open sobs. The only way out was through.

So where's the jasmine scent? I haven't seen it in a while, and I would think that this would be the place for it, no?

'This is the last moment for a father and his son,' she thought as she took a step back into the shadows.

'If only I was given that moment with my mother.' She forced herself not to cry, she needed to be here for her friend, she needed to be strong.

She waited quietly as she could, the unwelcome tears streaming silently down her face.

They all started to walk to the far end of the temple towards the altar. Levin, without turning his head, says, "Murkin...Grotik...come no further. This is for Laren and the girl."

The walk seemed to last an eternity for Laren. Between utter exhaustion and the knowing what he would quickly face, time could not pass fast enough. Every step brought him closer to an end he did not want to arrive to. Every step he drew him closer to the end of innocence. The suffocating feeling was unbearable.

Kit's footsteps were heavy and labored. She did not want to witness what would soon happen. Memories flooded her mind and it was nearly more than she could take. Her eyes welled up with tears uncontrollably and began to roll down her cheeks. The thoughts of her family were all too near. Now her freind Laren was about to endure something that she knew all too well...grief. In her young life she learned that the only way out of it was through it. With frightening apparence she realized that she was not yet through her grief from the past and wondered if she ever would be.

As the three rounded the corner of the alter Laren and Kit could see a feather mattress on the floor lit by a nearby lantern. A small person lay on the mattress under a blanket. The person was asleep and breathing shallow. Levin bends down resting his hand on the person's shoulder and softly says, "Alton, my friend, your son Laren is here."

Alton wakes and in a raspy voice says, "Laren my boy...come see your Dad."

Laren followed, his eyes bleary with exhaustion. His stomach churned as the gravity of the situation began to set it. He couldn't get to the temple fast enough, and now he could bearly make his legs move.

Now is not the time to mourn. He thought to himself.

He kept his legs moving and his eyes trained on the man leading him.

Sneaking throught the shadows of the dawing hours the four move hastily around the front to the entry door. Grotik keeps watch on the street and Murkin knocks lightly on the door...*knock knock...knock...knock...knock knock*

The door opens and two man sized robed figures come from behind the door and silently go back the way the the four had come. Laren enters, then Kit, then Murkin, and Grotik enters closing the door.

The temple is lit with dim flames from lanterns barely lighting the row of columns leading to the altar at the other end. The gems frosted on the columns reflect the dim lantern light in sedate sparkles in a myriad of red shades. The inside of the Temple looks much like the night sky with the thousands of red refractions glittering up to the ceiling and walls.

Walking down the center of the hall is a cloaked figure. The light twinkling from the jewels hit his cloak giving him a mysterious presence. He approaches the group. In a hushed elven accent he says, "Murkin...Grotik. You've done well. He is here safely." Looking over at Laren he continues, "Laren, I'll not delay you with unnecessary words except to say, that my name is Levin the Hawk. Your father will be very happy to see you. Come."

Moving quietly in the dawn the noise from the soldiers couls be heard. The two Goblins directed Laren, Kit, and the horses through the smaller side streets. Murkin would scout ahead to make sure it was clear of investigation and wave them up upon confirmation.

Past houses and stores they made there way to the Temple of Jeweled Light- a holy house of Sardior. It was a building in an oval shape and faceted like a giant gem. It had a large spiraled tower in the middle and at it's top was an overlook. The four were at the rear of the building and Murkin crept ahead to see the placement of the soldiers location. Grotik kept a watchful eye for any signal from Murkin.

Suddenly Grotik looks back to Laren and Kit and says, "Move quick! No soldiers out front. Horses will be safe...Go now!"

Kit dismounted and attempted to walk along Star-Sprinters' side. She was utterly exhausted, her cramped legs almost gave in as she touched the ground.

"If I stay on the horse, I'll fall asleep on Laren," she said matter of factly as she regained her footing and worked the muscles in her thighs with he hands.

They walked on.

As they drew close to the town she whispered an almost silent prayer to Paladine, "Please let him be still yet with us Lord. Do not forsake my little friend at the end of our journey."

As the horses near the edge of the town Grotik slows them down to a walk. Then he pulls on the reigns hard. The two Goblins talk quietly but furiously. Laren and Kit both with eyes half open can see that the town is filled with soldiers bustling about getting ready for a march.

The goblin Murkin looks over to Laren and Kit and says, "Very bad...we must go round side and sneak way into red temple...main street is too busy with them."

The night ride carried on for a few more hours. Laren and Kit were utterly exhausted...mentally and physically. At times the two goblins would stop to let the horses rest for a short time. They offered food to Laren and Kit in the hopes of keeping up their strength. Kit ate without question. Laren however, had other things on his mind and wasn't much in the mood for food. The goblins would talk to each other quietly in their grainy language. The quiet of the night seemd much more overwhelming with everyone knowing of what was to come. It seemd that knowing and waiting for what was around the corner was worse than the actual experience. There was a sad tension about that was absolutly inescapable. Perhaps the only way out of it was to go through it.

Fog from the river was starting to rise and roll across the undulating hills and to the east Kossuth was rising from its' sleep. The soft crimson glow was slowly getting brighter and the moons were lighting the sky in their peculiar illumination.

As the four riders crested a hill they could see ahead of them a town spread across the fields on the east bank of the river. Grotik stopped the horse and let Laren and Kit walk up alongside of them. Murkin whispers, "That's Xuad'Tarn just down the hill. We must go before people wake. They would find Me and him (pointing to Grotik) of a sneaky sort and maybe hate us. Besides, light hurts us eyes."

Grotik giddyups and the horses begin to trot down the hill.

Laren bearly heard any of it. He could feel exhaustion fighting against adrenaline. He knew that there would be no safe place to rest until in town, and not until after he saw his father.

At length Grotik slows the horses to a walk. He slows up to let Laren and Kit pull up to the side. Murkin says in his rough voice, "I was hoping that we not run into them. This road dangerous. Wasteland to the west and Toture Land to the right. Very dangerous road at night. We should be in town by dawn. A few hours from now. Good that horses are fast or we might be in belly of horned wolves." He gives an impish grin and takes out a water skin and drinks from it.

As the four of them started to gallop down the moonlit road to the right they could see a patch of darkness that light could not penetrate. Another howl sounded out very close now.

Star Sprinter was in full sprint and keeping a smooth even stride. He did not flinch at the howling but seemd to have kept his wits about him. As the darkness came closer trying to meet the four ahead on the road coming from the darkness could be seen a black wolf head. The difference being that this wolf was far larger than normal and appeared to have curling ram-like horns coming from it's skull.

Laren and kit could see up ahead that Murkin had pulled out his bow and was taking aim at the horned wolf. Letting his arrow fly the wolf was hit in the neck and roared in pain and slowed it's pace just a little. Murkin let another arrow go hitting the wolf in the chest. The wolf and the dark "fog" started to fall away from the two horses and their riders.

Kit, who had stood up quickly upon hearing the wolves, almost tripped in the fire. 'Damn, I wished we could have gotten some sleep' she thought angrily. She tossed the chicken towards the direction of the howls and stuffed the jerky and bread into her backpack.

As Laren got on Star-Sprinter she kicked as much dirt on the fire as she could. She thought he was going to leave her until he spun the horse and gave her his little hand. She took it, fear of the wolves giving her the energy she needed to hop on behind him.

Murkin says, "Ride hard...we should out run them...but they clever...the're might be more of them than us".

'They're clever?' she thought, wish he had told me that BEFORE[/i] I threw the chicken.

Laren breathed a deep sigh. "Yes, of course. Why would there be anything less?"Laren asked no one in particular. Shaking his head while he dumped his still warm tea on the fire as he stood. The fire hissed in defiance.

"SHould we leave the fire? Wolves don't like fire, and the smell of the smoke may mask our scent?"

He didn't really wait for an answer, but went straight to lashing his bag back to the horse. He climbed up easily and settled in the saddly. He wheeled the horse around, and almost as an afterthought, put out a hand for Kit.

Laren began to mumble under his breath. shadow wolves, whatever the blazes they are... hungry I'm sure... probably just explode like everything else. His head began to jerk ever so slightly to emphasize his words.

Murkin and Grotik started talking in their tongue to each other. After their conversation Grotik says, "Come we must go. we don't have much time...father is very sick."

At that point a there was a distant but all too close wolf howl. The horses were startled and began to get nervous. Grotik held up his little hand high (well, high for him) checking the direction of the breeze. It was coming from the west. The howl came from the east. Grotik says, "The breeze carries the horse smell, we must leave now! Shadow Wolves are on the hunt. They have riders!"

The goblins, Kit and Laren sat around the fire in quiet for some time, it crackled and popped away as it ate the very light and dry wood.

Kit looked over at her new halfling friend. Her nerves were frayed from sharing her story with her Protectorate friends. Although it was hours ago, it seemed like months had passed since then. Months without sleep.

She saw that he was lost in his thought upon his father. She wondered how close they were. 'At least he will get to say goodbye to him', she thought.

A lonely tear escaped. She knew not if it were for him, or herself.

Laren appeared not to notice much of anything. He didn't even look at the chicken as he sat there holding a full cup of hot tea. He seemed quiet content to stare into the flames. He did look up for a moment as he moved to sit leaning against the trunk of a knuckle-root tree.

Laren looked at the goblins. "So uh, what're your stories?" He looked back to the fire. He appeared to not have ever even heard Kit's answer to the question she had been answering. "How'd you come to Threshold?"

Laren resumed his unblinking stare into the flame. His cup of tea remained unsipped.

Kit eagerly reached and took the chicken, and set it in her lap on top of the jerky.

Forgetting herself, she dug her fingers into the soft meat of the breast and ripped out a section, stuffing a piece into her mouth before even looking up at Laren.

With a slight smile and a stuffed mouth she tried to apologize. Laren didn't even notice her break in etiquette.

"Thank you Murkin," she managed to say while still chewing.

Murkin raises his hand, "Food we have, 'nuff for everyone, wait." The two goblins go to their horse and as in the fashion before Grotik kneels down and Murkin gets up and searches through the pack. He pulls out a cloth bundle and brings it down and the two walk to the fire. Murkin unwraps the cloth revealing a whole roast chicken! He says, "it's cold but it smells good. Garret and Eldan wanted you to be fed." He hands to chicken to Kit and Laren, "Please, eat."

Laren rummaged through his backpack looking for food. "I think I have some bread in here. I didn't pack well. Wasn't really prepared for a trip."

Laren pulls a fist-sized bundle wrapped in wax-paper from his bag. "Here's some cheese." Laren unwrapped the cheese and gagged. "Second thought, you probably shouldn't eat that."

After a little more rummaging he managed to produce some bread and jerky. He gave half of it to Kit and offered the rest to the goblins.

Kit plopped herself down by the fire. As she took a cup of tea from Laren she answered,

"Until Leech catches up with me."

She blew at the steam coming off the surface of the tea, holding the cup with slightly shaky hands. She suddenly realized how tired she was.

"Do we have anything to eat?"

"Yes, of course." Laren takes some small metal cups from his bag and fills them. His thoughts are clearly somewhere else.

Trying to keep his mind off the matters at hand, he says "so uh, Kit... How uh... who long do you plan to be in Threshold?"

Grotik and Murkin got off of their horse to let him rest. They spoke to each other quietly in a somewhat gutteral language. Grotik went over to the horse and kneeled down in the dirt. Murkin stepped up onto his shoulders and started to unstrap some water skins from the horse pack. He threw the skins to the ground and pulled a bundle of wired sticks and a wooden plate from the pack. He then got down and assembled the the disk and sticks into a bucket. After pouring the water from the skins into the bucket he brought it over to the horse to drink.

The two goblins went to Laren's and Kits horse and did the same. Except this time Murkin knelt on the ground and it was Grotik that searched the pack and watered the horse.

After this was done the two came over to the small fire that was made for the resting. The scarred goblin, Murkin, says, "The horses rest now and will be strong for next stretch of this ride. Is the tea ready...and can we have some?"

Laren gave a start. He seemed to only just realized that he was riding. "Huh? Oh.. Right..." He pulled the reigns and the horse stopped. Laren climbed down from the saddle and stretched. His face was a stoney scowl. he was obviously lost in thought.

"We probably have time for a quick fire, if anyone would like some tea. I think I could do with a cup." He rummaged through his bag and pulled out some tinder, and his flint. He chipped at the flit with his dagger.

Kit leaned over and spoke into Laren's ear.

"I know you want to reach your father, but we must let the horse's rest, or we will not make it to him at all." She tried to say it as nicely as she could, which was very difficult while in full gallop.

Kit shook her head, it was obvious Laren was on a mission, and it would get the horses injured.

"You're father is waiting for you, he is doing his part by staying alive to see you one last time before he passes to the next world. If you injure the horses and do not reach him, you will have failed him. Slow down and rest the horses. Give youself time to think upon what you want to say to him. Don't let this moment pass hastily, only to reget it later."

Kit choked on her own words, but squeezed him reassuringly to convey them.

Grotik and Murkin rode alongside Laren and Kit keeping pace with them. If they said anything it could not be heard over the thundering hooves. Night out on the rolling hills was dark except for the light that was cast from the Moons. The stars were displayed in a twinkling cascade of light that stretched across the sky. The night air sweeping from the mountains behind bit shrewdly at times but there was nothing that would stop the horses from running forth. The peace of the night was never fully realized due to the urgency of recent events. Xuad'Tarn lay north on the road and was usually a two days ride. With the speed of the horses it seemed that the destination was arrive much sooner.

Some minutes passed and the horses, although swift and strong, needed to rest for a bit. They were frothing at the mouth giving subtle signs of discomfort. Murkin waved his arm to Laren to slow up his horse and pull over.

Kit was quiet as she rode behind Laren on Star-Sprinter's back. The excitement of the sudden change in events had pushed her sleep away.

She was full of dozens of questions for Laren, but chose to keep quiet. She respected secrets and was wise enough to know the wisdom of keeping them that way.

As soon as they were from the outer limits of Threshold, Laren had pushed the very willing Star-sprinter hard. Once beyond the outlying farms and houses though he slowed to a trot, using the moon to guide them along the road.

Kit found herself warm enough, the little halfling generated more heat than her and the horse combined. She continued to stay quiet, sensing that laren was lost in his own thoughts.

Garret and Eldan pull Laren away from the group. Talking in a whisper Garret says, "Laren, you now have your fathers' ring. You can either accept the charge that comes with that or walk away. Whatever you choose is, of course, up to you. Both of us would like to see you join the Hawks. Being in the company could lead you to the answer of the mystery surrounding your father demise...and those involved with it. If you choose not to go with it you'll still have a place in our 'family'. Give your father our love...he was like our brother. We'll be out of town for a few days on business. Be careful and may Sardior's luck pass to you."

The tone in Garret's voice was quite serious and seemed out of place coming from the normally jovial Halfling. Tonight his look was sullen and dark.

Garret walks to Kit and escorts her away from the group. He looks up to her and quietly says, "Kit, there's a reason beyond circumstance that your going. There is suspicion surrounding this crimson 'Eye'. What we suspect we can't tell you in order to be free of any preconcieved notions. However, you can lend insight to it. Oh, and watch after Laren. His father is dying and he might be given to blind emotion...as anyone probably would be. We'll see you in a few days. Luck of Sardior..."

Garret turns back, "Laren, any questions we can try to answer?"
