Title: Dreams of a Tortured Soul
Post by: Wildfire on March 07, 2006, 07:36:51 PM
This conversation takes place after the discussion in the tavern regarding the plan to redeem Dannobar's soul.

The night grows late and the tavern begins to shut down for the evening. The early spring night is mild as the days have gotten warmer. The scent of new blossoms faintly drifts upon the calming breeze. The sounds of peepers echoes through the night singing their praise of the breaking of the winter chill.

Zurn looks up to the twinkling stars in the great inky beyond. He closes his eyes and breathes deep and thanks Ehlonna for the pleasure of the scented air. "Aye, this vision of Dannobar's fall inta tha' darkness has me fumbled." he says to himself. "Dannobar surely would repent if'n he could. And Ehlonna...oh, my sweet Ehlonna is most troubled by his capture. Dannobar be a poor tortured soul tha' would take back all o' tha' nasty things he done." Zurn thinks. "Ehlonna methinks be callin' upon me to help a brother in need. I wanna help the man but it seems ta be a folly at this point. Still, it be tha' good an' proper thing ta be doin'...it feels right ta me. Valen spoke freely of his vision. Me, I'm not open as that. I mus' talk to Valen aboot the message Ehlonna send ta him."

Zurn walks into the shadow of the walls of the keep and waits for Valen to exit.

I'm not sure when Valen is actually going to exit since he may be caught in a conversation with Belwar in "Cetainty of Death, Small Chance of Success...". If it does take a while then he'll go see Lady Coryn and talk to Valen later. So, what's the timing on this? Johan...Dray?

Zurn chuckled at Belwars antics, "May Moradin himself sharpen yer axe. We're gonna need that hefty blade where we be goin'."

Belwar was furiously trying to get some crumbs out of his beard. He stopped and looked up. "What now? I'm afraid I missed that..."

Zurn nodded his head. He suddenly realized how exhausted he was! The night was packed with information that he needed to meditate on.

"Well, if'n ye not mind, I be needin' ta focus on this fer a bit o' time. I'm gonna go to tha temple and pray to our lady. Thank ye Lady Corryn, fer all o' yer help this night. Ye have a way aboot ye. Cap'n Coris, it's be an honor fer me to do what I can to help yer Keep and Gorna from darkness tha' will surely spread to you an yer folks."

Zurn spun to the door and said, "Vallen, we be on a mission fer our forest maiden. I'll be in tha temple if ye find tha ye be wantin' to seek her guidance. But I unnerstand ye may have yer own way o' doin' tha. Belwar, may Moradin himself sharpen yer axe!"

"Worry not, Brother." Lady Corryn responded smoothly. "I have the blessed spores and I will get them to you. You now need to talk with your comrades and entreat them in this holy duty. Visit me in the temple and I will entrust you with Her Lady's Spores before you leave."

Zurn looked wide eyed and eagerly at Lady Corryn and asked, "Ye be keepin' the lichen with ye milady? Or do ye be know where it be growin'? If we have ta fetch it then we'll have to reckon that into our travelin' plans."

Vallen gently handed the lady his water. He felt incredibly stupid and humbled by by two people of such profound faith. His teachings in the Living Tower included nothing of what Brother Zurn had spoke.

(He also laughed at people who prompted him to post within the thread, thinking that tactic one of profound ignorance of reality).

Zurn blushed at the approval of Lady Corryn's kiss. "Thank ye m'lady."

Lady Corryn straightened noticeably as Zurn spoke; her eyebrows lifted appraisingly and a smile stretched across her face revealing perfect teeth that glowed in the faint light of the room. "Such uncommon knowledge, Brother Zurn." She noted admiringly.

"Indeed the Lichen is one of Ehlonna's blessed gifts, and indeed it shall grow due to Ehlonna's grace bestowed upon it by Our Lady herself. Bravo Brother, bravo!" She took Zurn's hand as she spoke and, clasping it between her two slender ones, she kissed the back of it with soft lips.

"It's good to see that Our Lady has sent such worthy allies to us in this hour." She continued. "One day this keep will be a very temple unto Her Grace, and the next step to accomplishing that goal is to sanctify the chasm to the west and drive the darkspawn out. The destruction of Vorntok's followers will follow, and with their demise, Blessed Ehlonna will rest at ease once again." As she continued to speak Lady Corryn became more forceful in her words and posture, and she somehow seemed to bristle with faith and holy power.

Then she smiled dreamily and swooned, falling back to sit upon Coris's large wooden desk. She brought her elegant hand to her head and gasped slightly. "Oh, I'm sorry." She apologized. "I've gotten a little dizzy for a moment. Brother Vallen, may I take a sip of your water please?"

"Easy, beloved Sister." Coris said tenderly as he came around the desk and aided Lady Corryn. "Have a seat and rest; you've been touched again."

Zurn clears his throat and says, "Beggin' yer pardon m'lady but ain't Ehlonna's Lichen one of the blessed gifts of Ehlonna's herself?"

He looks at Vallen and explains, "Ehlonna's Lichen, along with Ehlonna's Moss, Algae, and Acorn is a gift tha' be given to a favored servant o' Ehlonna. Each one has differing purposes though. They not be plants ye find in tha' wild but they be given usually long before needed. Tha' giftin' is a rarity make no mistake. Fer us to be given tha' charge of using the lichen be an honor that we as children of Ehlonna may see only once in a lifetime Vallen...even by elf standards."

Zurn looks back to lady Ehlonna and says, "I assume tha' lichen will grow due in part, er mostly, 'cause it was given by our Lady fer such a purpose. It senses the evil and grows so to remove it, yes?"

Vallen looked at Bellwar and then back Corryn and Coris.

"Um...not to ruin the moment, but, how exactly are we supposed to start a garden amongst a den of evil?"

He smiled sheepishly.

Zurn kissed his holy symbol of Ehlonna. He almsot felt as though he'd betrayed his benevolent godess by wearing the emblem of Vorntok. He had serious reservations about donning it again.

He looked to Vallen and Belwar to see if they would also take up this holy charge.

Zurn stood straight and said, "Aye, It'd be me honor to do such fer me Lady."

"Indeed." Lady Corryn replied with a glowing smile. "It was a gift to me, given some time ago by Our Lady through our Brothers and Sisters of the subterranean city of Lichen's Core, far to the east and north. It was the first gift of Our Lady to them, and by it they survived and flourished. It is said that this special lichen will clean the most foul places that there be and turn the very pits of the foullings into beautiful underground groves consecrated to Our Lady."

Coris gazed fondly at Lady Corryn as she spoke; he seemed to have a bit of a far-away look upon him. "If you were to plant this lichen in the caves where beloved Dannobar was slain, then those caves would become holy unto Lady Elhonna, and thus consecrated, Dannobar would be at rest, and the entire cave complex would, aside from some powerful counter magics, be uninhabitable by the black gargun and their masters."

Coris picked up from where Lady Corryn left off, saying, "That would tender us the double bounty of salvaging Dannobar as well as driving the threat from our doorstep." It was clear that he was enthused by this idea. "What say, gentlemen?" He asked. "Will you do this thing for Our Lady of the Forest?"

Zurn eyes shifted back and forth as he searched his memory to see if there was anything that he had been taught on this particular plant. At the present time he couldn't remember. However, he got the obvious sense that he was about to learn about another of Ehlonna's great gifts.

With a raised eyebrow, Vallen looked inquisitively at the lady fair.

"Ehlonna's Lichen My'Lady?" he asked.

Coris shook his head sadly. "I think you're right, Brother Zurn." He said. "His body is likely devoured by now, given the company that he kept. But my thinking is that we don't necessarily need a body." He looked questioningly at Lady Corryn who became somberly thoughtful.

"If he is dead, but not at rest," She reasoned, "then he must be haunting the area about the chasm. I think that we would need to find his specter, which should be near where he was killed. He could then either lead you to his remains, or perhaps it would only be necessary to sanctify the location of his death."

Coris's head bobbed in agreement as Lady Corryn spoke. "That would have the added benefit of making that area uninhabitable to Vorntok's minions."

"I could give them Ehlonna's Lichen." Lady Corryn whispered.

A smile snaked its way across Coris's face and into his eyes. "Yup." He said, his head bobbing thoughtfully.

Zurn spoke up, "Well I be wonderin' thet meself. It dunna seem likely that his body be in the same place as before. An' serchin' the valley with all the gargan be a bit foolhardy methinks. Is there any divine way o' speckin' out where he be?"

"We did not." Coris admitted tiredly.

"Brother Valen," Lady Corryn addressed the druid as she let go of his hand and picked up a wooden goblet to drink from. "That Melzak didn't use arcane magic...he was a divine caster."

"True." Coris agreed. "You have to understand," he continued. "While not making excuses, I will say that we were hurt and exhausted. When we got the report that Melzak was dead, it was from a trustworthy source and we didn't question it. That Melzak was tertiary at the time, and not our primary concern."

Lady Corryn continued for a moment, saying, "We also need to remind ourselves that we don't know whether this Melzak of yours is the same person as the Melzak of our past."

There was a fair silence then, while all present idled in their own thoughts.

"Our question tonight is what is to be done now." Coris observed. "How do we salvage Dannobar's soul from the Vulture King?"

"I would say ye be right," Zurn said. "But much o' tha' depends on the manner o' Melzak's death." Turning to the Capatain and the Lady Zurn asks, "How did the little trickster die? Did ye see him dead?"
Title: Dreams of a Tortured Soul

"Perhaps if Melzak was a Master of Tricks and Lies his performance the day of Vorntok's death was exemplary?" Vallen said, finally coming out of his daze.

"He must have used powerful arcane magic to make it appear he died?" he posed.

"Huh...well, we could be spendin' the rest o the night trying ta figure out who this Melzak is and not be any closer to the truth. But he be out there I assure ye. And it be me guess tha' he be knowing much of the histaory o what ye speak. What ye be thinkin' 'bout this, Belwar...Vallen?" Zurn asked

"It was certainly my understanding that Melzak had been destroyed." Coris answered. "As for exactly what part of the mountains Vorntok was from, I can't say. It could easily have been that area or any other. But it was from those mountians that surround this forest."

"...and to yer knowledge Melzak was likewise destroyed?" Zurn asked. "Now ye said tha' he, Vorntok, be from the mountains to tha' west...be it a part tha be near ta us? Say, the valley we stumbled inta? Tha' is where we bumped Dannobar" Zurn inquired with great curiosity.

Coris shifted in his heavy wooden chair. Lady Corryn, still holding Vallen's hand gently, shared a momentary, sad glance with the captain.

"A dozen years ago or more," he began heavily. "Lady Corryn and I were still young." He laughed as he stared affectionately at Lady Corryn. "Well, time has been far kinder to you, Sister, than to me." They smiled ruefully. "We were near the beginning of our careers, as you are now. Vorntok was a half orc, half ogre pretender, aiming at immortality and deism. He was insane, and? his brow furrowed as he thought for a moment, ?he hailed from the mountains that surround this forest, if I recall.?

?He did.? Lady Corryn agreed.

?Vorntok was gathering a force to worship him, and he had the unfortunate luck to court me into his fold. He wanted to seduce worshippers from our Lady of the Forest to worship him, that he might rise in power and eventually supplant our lady. It was for this reason that he selected the vulture as his totem animal: the vulture, he said, would devour the creatures of the forest much as he himself would devour our lady.?

?Seems he must still have the same goal.? Lady Corryn observed.

?Indeed.? Coris agreed. ?At that time, he did have a gnome working for him; a master of tricks and lies named Melzak. The short end of the story is that a team of our Brothers and Sisters, lead by Lady Corryn ventured forth and vanquished Vorntok. He was obliterated by our combined holy might. The conflict left many of our Brothers and Sisters dead, but I personally saw to it that Vorntok?s dead body was destroyed. We disembodied him and spread the parts far and wide. Everyone took a part to a different, secret location and disposed of it. We never spoke of it again. To our understanding, no one knew where more than a single part of the remains was.?

?Somebody seems to have found out, though. Brother.? Lady Corryn suggested. Corris hung his head and supported by a splayed hand, seemingly lost in thought. Or memory, perhaps.

Zurn looks to Belwar, "Well I ain't sayin' ya should not a killed him. Things being what they were, he'd've killed us dead if'n he had the chance. What I be sayin' is that he was mislead. He was lusted after by the vulture who probly promised him power and salvation. Now, everyone makes their own choices in life that's true. But Dannobar, at heart, be a good man. Besides, Ehlonna not be given up on him, so neither will I. She be weepin' fer his soul."

Zurn looks to Lady Corynn and Captain Coris and says, "Please, Lady, Cap'n,  what do ye know 'bout the Vulture King, Vortok?"

Zurn clears his throat. " Well, Cap'n Coriss, Like aye be tellin' the good lady here earlier, in me dream a white unicorn, this be Ehlonna, was standin' o'er a bloody faceless man. A great vulture, Vortok methinks, appeared through this manifested symbol (he shows the circle of squares) in tha' sky and came down upon tha unicorn. Tha dirty bird grabbed the helpless man and tried ta pull him away from our lady. The man began ta scream his apologies and genuinly seemed sorry for what he done. The vulture hadn't completely pull the body from Ehlonna. Methinks tha' Vortok dunna have complete control o Dannobar...not yet. So his soul can still be reachin' salivation..er, salvation."

"I wasn't ta keen on his betrayal but I be seein' now tha' he be truly repentent o what he done."Zurn says lowering his eyes "In tha' forest, berries may be lookin' like they be tastin' sweet but they can be poison and make ye sick. Dannobar tasted the wrong berries. It be up ta us to make him well. I'll not rest until he be saved."

Coris and Lady Corryn listened in compassionate silence to Vallen's telling of his dream. Laddy Corryn placed a slender, comforting hand upon Vallen's cheek. "Worry not, Brother." She said softly. Her breath was sweet and she was lightly scented with cedar and honeysuckle.

Her hand took up Vallen's and she held it as she said, "Brother Zurn, you must now tell us what you told me earlier. Try to recall all of the details of your vision."

"Brother Zurn, would you mind if I go first?" (Since in RL your getting lunch? - hehe, cool) Vallen asked for which Zurn gave a quick nod. (I hope)

Vallen took a deep breath, then began.

?The house I saw in the vision was picturesque, somehow I sensed that it always had been. Within it a family that is large, healthy, and loving. One child in particular seemed to be the focus of the vision: a boy larger than the other children, pushing firmly into the realm of obese. Then the vision seemed to flash and move me forward in time.? Vallen talked a bit with hands now, motioning this way and that, almost lost in the telling of the tale.

?I had new visions in succession, one of the same child helping another child, and then helping other children, many who are sick, and yet another of him teaching younger children. Then another of him playing with and entertaining large group of children, yet another of him feeding people. In every vision he was always tending, serving, helping. A boy of sharp eye and a boundless heart, his philanthropy knew no bounds.? Vallen?s voice broke at the last comment, he cleared his through seeming surprised at the emotion.

?Then the visions became surreal. The next was a grassy field, a vulture limps through the pasture, clearly feigning injury. The boy runs to help the vulture and looks at the blood on the vulture?s wing. He cleans and bandages the vulture, who in turn seems grateful. It gave the child a deer, with which the he fed the village. The vulture pledged his friendship to the child.?

Vallen paused and stood up, seemingly restless with the emotion of the tale.

Still talking with accompaniment of his hands but now pacing the room, he continued. ?The child is hungry, and the vulture brings him a rabbit, which the child cooks hurriedly and eats, fending off starvation, while the vulture leers on. Too late the child recognizes the taste of foul poison in the rabbit. He tries to tend to the villagers, but he is sick, and dying, although the villagers don?t know it.? He said with a finger pointing up.

The noted change of tense Vallen?s narrative was not lost on his audience, Vallen was no longer telling the vision as it happened, but as if he was currently in it.

?The vulture has drawn the child away from the village and begins to use the child for its own purposes. The child is frightened and alone. The villagers are too far away to help the child who always helped them.?

Vallen shivered a moment.

?The child is getting smaller. Not thinner, just smaller, as though the vision were drawing away from the child and he were receding towards the horizon. Through the periphery of the vision, a horse?s legs translate, white and strong, as though I had been pulled under the horse and he now stands in front of me, majestic and pure.?

?Standing behind the horse now, the child was little more than a spot in the distance. The horse turns to look at me, a long, tapered horn evidencing upon her brow in the rotation of the majestic head. A heavy tear falling from the brown, loving eye to the ground.?

As Vallen spoke of the tear, one escaped him unbidden. He stood in place within the room for a moment to collect himself, ?Forgive me, I never thought the words aloud would affect me so, I just need a moment.?

Coris and Lady Corryn looked up expectantly as the trio entered the office, which was dimly lit by a single candle that perched in a wooden candle holder, which in turn sat upon the otherwise barren desktop. Zurn recognized this candle as the one that Lady Corryn had carried from the temple.

Both were dressed as though for bed. Lady Corryn wore a simple ankle-length nightshirt and her feet were bare. Her long hair hung near to the small of her back, tumbling elegantly downward. Coris sat in his usual heavy wooden chair, and was likewise dressed in a simple woolen nightshirt.

"Come in, please. Sister Corryn has just been filling me in on your needs. Dire needs, it seems." He sat back a bit heavily. "Sister Corryn tells me that our Lady of the Forest has visited both of you brothers recently. Can you each share your experiences? From there, we can talk of history."

Vallen let out a small laugh as they rushed across the courtyard to Coris's quarters.

"I merely guessed Z....Brother Zurn. I had seen it in your eyes as the group adjourned our impromptu meeting in the tavern. You had that look of 'wait a moment' in your eyes." Vallen said.

As they reached the door to Coris's quarters, the guards allowed them entry without so much as a word.

"The Lady must already be here," Valen said as he opened the door and allowed the two dwarfs to step in before he passed and closed the door behind him.

Zurn nodded, "I unerstan'." At once he started out towards the tavern doubletime.

On his way Zurn was thinking about his quiet life in Gorna. He never dreamed that he would be fighting to save someone's soul. Most priests in Gorna when he was growing up would be an advisor or a healer. Gorna was a quiet town that grew crops and livestock. Now, he was a soldier in a war between gods! He swore to himself that he would not disappoint Ehlonna. Dannobar had to have salvation.

Zurn got to the door of the tavern and burst in slightly out of breath. "Valen...*breath*...Belwar...*breath*...Lady Corryn be wantin' us to be in Coris's chamber right away...like, now. Well, Belwar ye don't have to come but ye might be wantin' ta hear what she be havin' ta say."

"Right now Valen an' Bewar be speakin' in tha tavern. I be waitin' fer him ta be done with it to talk ta him meself. I'll git him an be meetin' with ye in Coris's office as ye request."

Zurn began to bolt out of the door to the chapel but then stopped short and turned to Lady Corryn and askes, "Oh, should I be gettin' Belwar too. He may be wantin' to know some o this stuff about the Vortok. It may also give him more of a reason ta be goin' inta the guts o tha' beast...if ye take me meaning..."

Lady Corryn listened with growing intensity to Zurn's narrative. "There is much." She answered. "But we need more than you and I to talk on it." She stood then, rather purposefully it seemed. "Zurn, go and get Brother Vallen, take him from whatever he is doing and bring him to Coris's office. Immediately. We will all want to be together for this conversation."

Lady Corryn seemed transformed to Zurn. Her voice, while still lovely and caring, was brisk and businesslike now. She was far more commanding than Zurn had thus far seen her, and she pulled with surprising strength upon Zurn's arm to lift him from the pew and guided him firmly towards the door of the chapel as she spoke. She glided still, but more pointedly, as it were, while she held aloft her candle and walked barefoot out into the inner bailey.

"If you cannot find Brother Vallen, do not fret, but come yourself to Coris's office with whatever haste you can muster. Wake him if you must."

"Well," Zurn says, "not so much hauntin' me as they be visions o one tha' be haunted. "Valen talked earlier o' Dannobar being in the grip o the Vulture King. It sunddenly made sense ta me what me dream be about. Dannobar be a tortured soul tha' be repentent o what he done. In the the dream a white unicorn, this be Ehlonna, was standin' o'er a blody faceless man. A great vulture, Vortok methinks, appeared through this manifested symbol (he shows the circle of squares) in tha' sky and came down upon tha unicorn. Tha dirty bird grabbed the helpless man and tried ta pull him away from our lady. The man began ta scream his apologies and genuinly seemed sorry for what he done..."

Zurn looks to the great symbol of Ehlonna and says, "Dannobar's soul is not yet lost. Vortok had a grip but hadn't taken him away entirely. Ta keep Vortok from gainin' any more souls...'specially unwilling ones...and ta aid Ehlonna in that salvation I be needin' as much information on Vortok as I can get. Do ya have any more knowin' on this defiler Vortok?"

Lady Corryn studied Zurn as he plodded along the aisle towards the pew where she sat half-turned. Her face was remarkably illuminated by the lone candle, and Zurn could see her eyes sharpen as he spoke. "Are your dreams haunting you, brother?" She asked.

Zurn enters the chapel and nods to the great symbol of Ehlonna. The symbol of Ehlonna is barely lit by the faint glow of the candle next to Lady Corryn. He turns to her seeing face cast in the peculiar light and says, "Thank ye milady. Yer a gentle soul, ye are. It dinna seem ta be right that ye be staying in walls o' stone like this. It should be more like a field o flowers methinks!" Zurn says.

"The light from tha' candle be makin' this house of hers seem kinna like a dream. A mystical dream tha' speaks o the beauty o the night. But not all dreams be beautiful methinks. Some can be dark and disturbing." Zurn says in a sullen tone.

"Please, Brother, you are always welcome in Mother's temple." She said. "You sound in need. What's wrong?" As Zurn entered the temple and stomped down the aisle towards the altar and Lady Corryn, he could see that her hair was let down. If flowed in tumbling curves well past her slender shoulders near to the small of her back. She was wearing a plain nightshirt that hovered a mere few fingers above her bare feet. She held a candle aloft in a wooden holder as she moved to sit in a pew near the front of the temple.

"Come sit with me." She said with honest concern.

A small light flittered in the depths of the chapel. "Yes?" A smooth voice answered Zurn's harsher one. "Is that you, Zurn?" Peering through the intervening darkness, Zurn could see the slim form of Lady Corryn standing at the far end of the chapel.

After a few minutes that seem to be a lifetime Zurn says to himself, "I canna wait no longer. I got me some questions tha' be needin' some answers."

Zurn rights himself and heads across the compound to the chapel. Arriving at the door he quietly lifts the latch and slowly opens the door to keep it quiet. *Creeeeeeek* Under his breath Zurn says, "Blast it all! A squeeky door!"

Zurn pops his head in and looks around. On the far wall to his right he sees the large symbol of Ehlonna eerily lit by two flickering candles. " 'ello? Lady Corryn...are you here? I wish ta speak wit' ya..."
