Title: 04.16.2127 - The Meeting (Harrison and Emma)
Post by: Dray on March 22, 2008, 09:20:19 PM
Emma followed the Deaconess from the door of the plush carriage coach to the front gate of the outer wall. She bowed her head which remained dry within the hood of the cloak. It was a miserable rainy day of early spring, and the chill in the air gave no hint of the summer to come. Acknowledging the cloth and carriage of the Clergy, the guard let the old woman and her young helper through the gate without so much as a hint in asking for papers.

A few minutes later, at the entry way to the orphanahe, the woman was berating the young child.

"I don't care whose daughter you are, if you so much as take a toe out of line I will see to it that you are severely punished, do we have an understanding young one?" the woman scorned down from above her impossibly long and crooked nose at her.

"Yes Deaconess Myrtle, I will...." Emma started but was cut off.

"You will make your rounds and not so much as say "Hi" to any child within the orphanage, I will not be held out of the church on a day such as this by the petty foolishness of a young girl" she scowled. "Hand them each a cookie, check for sickness and meet me at this entry by 6 night-hand or I swear by all that is holy you will not see supper for a week."

Emma willed herself not to cry. The woman had no mercy for weakness and was a silver-tongued witch who would successfully deny this entire speech should she report it.

"Now get to work."

15 minutes later Emma had retreated to a corner of the common room, crying quietly in it. The bowl of cookies perched on a lone rickety table on the far side of the room where the children were enjoying them and wondering about the weird young priestess girl. They didn't dare go to the center of the room where the old donated wooden crates someone once called furniture was. Instead they leered from the corner.

"She hasn't even lowered her hood!" one said.

"Did you check the symbol? She is of the Circle of the Deaconess! I didn't know kids could be in that?" questioned an older girl.

As they whispered and wondered, Emma merely cried in the corner, oblivious to them. She hated her father, her station and her life.

Harrison felt the tension in the room as he entered. It was strangely hushed. His attention was quickly brought to the shape of a sobbing girl. The hell did I just walk into? He wondered.

Harrison scowled a bit. The other children were clearly distracted by this sobbing lass, and she was just as clearly not planning to stop any time soon. Harrison sighed. Why was nothing ever just normal?

Reaching into his pocket gently, Harrison nodded silently to the few in the crowd he called friends. They all knew Clive, Harrison's pet white squirrel. Harrison pulled Clive out of his deep pocket, and from his other pocket, Harrison produced a small shiny quartz stone he'd found in the court yard. He gave the quarts to Clive, and looked the creature in the face for a moment. Clive took the stone and scurried off to the sobbing girl, stopping just a couple of feet away.

Clive sat up straight, took the stone from his mouth and held it out, chattering at the girl.

The girl had the exact reaction Harrison expected, she immediately stopped crying and let out a start before giggling a little. "Who are you little one, what are..." she stopped and looked over to the center of the room. There she saw Harrison standing with the group of children behind him in the corner, also looking on.

She seemed to remember herself at the moment and stood up, collecting herself and ignoring the squirrel. Her hood still up, her hands disappeared inside as she wiped her face of the tears.

"That's Clive," Harrison said matter-of-factly. "He doesn't like to see a pretty girl cry." Harrison no sooner said it than he regretted saying it... There were a couple of "OOO's" from the younger kids. He said it as a statement of fact, not a admission of attraction.

The girl lowered her hood, a gentle, perfect face with dark brown eyes and long brown hair emerged from the hood. She was indeed one of the prettiest girls Harrison had ever seen. But he immediately also recognized that she was a girl of station, she wore it plainly on the pretty face, but was it a mask, or was it make-up Harrison wondered.

"Interesting, does that line work on all the orphan girls around here?" she said. To Harrison, the girls snootiness sounded forced, like she didn't want to be a jerk.

The fact that she was of a higher station than Harrison meant nothing to him, nor her apparent guardedness. His face didn't change expression, nor did his tone change at all. "It's not a line, it's a fact. Look, he's sad you haven't accepted his gift," Harrison said, pointing at Clive. As if on cue, Clive lowered the quarts, and bowed his head to the floor.

"He's very sensitive for a white squirrel."

Despite herself the girl giggled and put her hand to her mouth in surprise at the squirrels antics.

"Oh my Kai...." she interrupted herself, closed her eyes for a second with what looked like of some kind of internal reprimand. When she re-opened them, despite whatever it was that she was just hard on herself for, her eyes had returned to the squirrel and lit up with affection and happiness.

"That is about the cutest thing I have ever seen, how did you teach him that," she said, not taking her gaze off squirrel. She bent down low but didn't get closer to him. Her smile was radiant. The dried tears on her cheeks forgotten.

Oops... Wrong post. Here's the right one.

"oh," Harrison said. "I didn't really teach him anything. He does genuinely like women. I just asked him to go be nice, he did the rest himself."

Clive skittered over to the girl, and put the quartz down on the floor, nudging it over to her with his nose, pausing every half an inch to look up at her and squeek.

"Oh my, it's like he's intelligent, I mean...um, like smart or...I don't know, like he is human or something," the girl stammered. She gingerly picked up the quartz and said, "thank you little squir...I mean Clive, it's a a very pretty stone."

As she stood up again while Clive scurried back to Harrison, she caught the looks from the gang of orphans behind him. Her face became flush with embarrassment and she lifted her arm to check the time. Her sleeve pulled back to reveal an ornate silver watch with artistic engravings and small inlaid diamonds. She didn't catch his stare at it while she started, "I better be getting back to the entry, I have to be back at the entry by 6, oh..." she stopped, looks like I have 20 turns left. She lowered her arm and returned her look to Harrison, and unfortunately the snickering behind him.

"Could you," her eyes darted about as she tried to think fast, "could you show me to any of the sick kids in the upstairs dormitories? I should administer medicine where it is needed." She sounded relieved at an excuse to get away.

Harrison pushed his glasses back up his nose by the bridge. "Sure, I can show you where you need to go," he said, feeding Clive a wafer.

Harrison began walking back through the door from whence he came. "Uh," he started. "Could I ask... ah, nevermind."

The girl quickly caught up to the boy and didn't look back at the gang of kids, as they stepped through the door which entered a corridor that led to a well-worn, but solid looking open wooden staircase she asked "Ask what?".

As they hit the first step she already looked very much relieved.

The girl let out a huge laugh half-way up the stairs, startling them both before she stifled it with her (watch) hand. "Oh I see, for the next lass to come along?" she asked teasing him.

She reached in her pocket, not waiting for the answer, and took out the quartz. Just before she handed it to the boy she pulled back her hand, "wait a minute, won't Clive be mad at you?"

"He did give it to me you know." she teased. With that she looked up the staircase to the opening in the ceiling and what would surely be the bedrooms on the floor above. "Are there really any sick kids up there right now?" she asked, still holding the quartz between a few fingers and her thumb.

"Oh, Well, I mean... I wouldn't ask, but it's Clive's favorite." Clive poked his head up out of Harrison's pocket and said "Squeek?" Harrison shushed Clive.

"Yes, actually, there's a small girl with the flu I believe. Abby, I think."  Harrison winced a little as Clive nipped his leg through a freshly chewed hole in his trouser pocket. "Clive changed his mind," Harrison said through clenched teeth. "You can keep it."

"I like Clive, he is very nice," she said while she pocketed the stone. "Could you show me to Abby's room?"

The boy nodded and led her up the stairs, after a moment to get his bearings he brought her down the hall, around a corner, down another hall to the opposite side of the building, up another flight of stairs and down two doors.

"This is her here," he said.

The clergy girl quietly slipped past him and opened the door, peering inside. Harrison, caught the feint scent of cinnamon coming off of her. She stepped through the door, the soft silk cloth of her robes barely making a whisper against the door and the door jamb.

The small room had eight bunk beds, four on each side, Abby was the third one on the right. There was no sign of any other children in the room. The Clergy girl quietly over to Abby's bedside and sat on the edge, the sleeping child didn't stir. It was then that the boy realized the girl had no healer's kit or medicine bag.

Harrison wondered what the girl was going to do, but asked no questions. Indead, he simpley waited and watched quietly.

He reached into his pocket to check for blood. There was none. He poked Clive playfully.

Clergy girl reached across the bed and felt the girls hand, she then moved a bit swiftly and resat herself near the girls pillow, placing a quick hand on her forehead.

"Mate." she swore.

The girl lifted Abby's eyelid away from her eye and leaned over her to look better, blocking Harrison's view. She then stood quickly up and off the bed and took her clergy school robe off in one motion, throwing it on the adjacent bed.

She looked nervously from Abby to the boy watching her and back to Abby, then made a decision.

"She is possibly dieing. Look, you are about to see something that if you report to anyone I will deny and you will end up in jail for a very long time, you got me?!" Although her words were threatening, her eyes pleaded with the unknown boy to be of character and trust.

The young girl, incredibly nervous and in a small bit of panic, didn't catch the kindred spirit in his voice.

"Excellent and good, could you stand against that door, make sure than no one comes in?" she asked, turning back to her robes for something inside an inner pocket.

Harrison could help but grin a little. She kinda cute when she was flustered.

He reached into a pocket on the side of his calf and retrieved a small vial.

"I uh, have some training in herbology," he stated. He walked to the side of the bed, with a gob of white salve on his finger. He dabbed it to the girls forehead, and muttered a spell.

"This won't be quite as effective as whatever you're about to do, I bet, but it might help," he said, rubbing the salve until it was clear.

Harrison's eyes widened a bit, as he hoped he'd not misunderstood her earlier warning. If she wasn't a user of magic, given who she was, Harrison would be in dire straits. He could only hope her excitement was good.

"I uh," he stammered. "I... it was just a quick...ah,  prayer... for luck..."

"Prayer my ass," she swore again, but while smiling and pointing at the patient who was now moving her head.

The Clergy girl forgot about her excitement for a moment and stepped back to her bedside with the green bottle she had acquired from her school robe in hand.

As she reached Abby, the little girl lurched forward and violently vomited all over her front. As quickly as it happened it stopped, but the entire front of the girls school uniform was ruined.

"This is what I get for wearing my uniform on Prayday," (OOC: Saturday) she said and Harrison wasn't sure whether she was half-laughing or half-crying as she said it.

The girl cleared Abby's mouth of vomit, inside and out with her own hand like she was merely wiping a bowl of leftover stew. She then poured the pot down the girls throat and said soothingly, "Please swallow Abby, it's tasty, that's a good girl."

The girl then did something Harrison didn't think he would see this soon in the city. The girl chanted divine magic and channeled a white energy from her hands and into the girls bosom.

Harrison felt a lot of things at that moment. He was very relieved to find that the girl was also a caster of sorts. He was also relieved that Abby seemed to have purged whatever it was that was bothering her.

Most obvious on his face though, was desire to follow suit, and lose his own lunch.

Harrison looked away to prevent a second deluge, and breathed through his mouth.

"Would you like for me to see if I could find a clean robe for you? There's usually some down the hall in the linen closet..." Harrison hoped she said yes, so he could step outside the room.

"Thanks but no, my robe wasn't what..." she stopped taking as she turned her head and realized that the boy was correct. She needed a new robe as well, for the liquid projection seemed to have had left no enemy standing, her robe....laying on the bed five feet away.....was splattered.

"Yes please." she said with a bit of a sob. "And a bag for all of this soiled clothing."

Harrison didn't reply, but was out the door even as she finsihed her sentence.

He finally breathed a chest full of untainted air as he got to the linen closet. He looked through the hanging robes and found one that looked to be able her size.

He took the robe down and turned to go, stopping before he took two steps. He hung the robe back up, and selected one three sizes smaller. He grabbed a large pillow case for the soiled clothes.

He grinned to himself as he breathed what he knew would be the last few clean breaths before re-entering the room.

Abby was awake and the clergy girl was trying to move her to another bed, awake from all the muck. Harrison, holding his breath, dropped the things he had acquired for her and helped her move Abby to two beds over.

"I am better. Did (you) give me medicine?" she asked.

"We did sweetie, you rest now though okay," the girl responded to her, and the child simply closed her eyes and slipped back into sleep.

Clergy girl moved back to Abby's destroyed bed and quickly started to gather all the soiled linens into a ball.

Harrison took a side of the comforter, and began to roll it up taking extreme care that he did not touch any vomit. He then took Abbey's pillow case off her pillow and stuffed the comforter into it.

Looking at his new aquaintance, he said gently, "Are you alright?"

"Rushed is all," she said looking at her watch. "Damn, I got 10 turns left."

The ball of vomit linens rolled and out of the way she started giving orders. Point at another bed across the room she said, "Go get that kids sheets and put them on Abby, we can let your caretakers sort out the beds later." As Harrison made to do what he was told, the clergy girl started to get undressed.

Harrison was caught completely off guard by the disrobing girl. He moved to do as he was instructed, which ordinarily he'd have questioned since she was really just a peer of his now, but he couldn't take his eyes off of her.

That is of course, until he tripped over the chest at the end of Abbey's freshly stripped bed. Of course, there'd be new blakets in there. He fished one out laying it on Abbey, keeping his back to the clergy girl.

He did allow himself to look at her distorted reflection on the polished water pitcher that stood on the night stand.

He could feel the heat from his face and knew he must have been red as an apple. Somehow, he smelled her cinnamon scent over the putrid stench of vomit.

He admitted to himself, he was more than slightly intrigued by this girl who was an uncommon mixture of beauty, talent and intelligence.

Harrison struggled with figuring out what to do next. He came up with nothing, so he simply stood there with his back to a beautiful naked girl.

Stu would never let him live that down. Let's not tell him, Harrison thought wryly to himself.

The girl was quiet for a bit while the boy went about his business, since she at one point was stark naked at the center of the room, she didn't question him just yet, else he turn around. After putting all the smelly clothes into a bag she cleaned her hands as best she could at a non-soiled end of the last linen and snatched the very small robe he brought her and wrapped it around herself.

It barely passed her knees and had the elementary school symbol, the very same one she had graduated from last year. She looked ridiculous, but shrugged it off, she would just have to endure Myrtle's lecture on the way home.

She looked at her watch, 6 turns, 6 lousy no-time-in-the-kingdom-for-security-turns....make that 5.

"Ok, quickly, what is your name?"

He still did not turn around.

The girls words were almost blurred as they raced out. "You can turn around Harrison, I have the robe on, thanks for your not looking. My name is Emmanuelle Keepsake, the] daughter of the High Priest Fresenius, he kind of is the ruler of the known world." she smiled, her attempt to make a joke of it in hopes to lesson the blow.

There was a slight panic to Emmanuelle's voice.

"Harrison turn...oh and nice to meet you to, turn around, I need to know I can trust you. I need to know you won't tell anyone about what we did here tonight. Especially my father, he would...let's just say he wouldn't understand ok," she pleaded.

"Harrison please turn around," she said looking at her watch again, then eyeing her ball of clothes and wondering how she would handle the smelly mess.

Harrison pretended he was just watching Abbey. "Yep," he nodded. "She's looking a lot better."

He finally turned and was relieved to see her clothed, scantly though she may be. He also realized that he felt horrible for doing that to her.

"You have my word, Emmanuelle. Assuming that I too have yours?" Harrison extended his hand to her.

Emannuelle seemed to slow down within 5 ticks of his words, catching the serious tone and trusted vow in his voice. Holding her robe closed with her left arm, she extended the other and shook his hand.

"Thanks Harrison, I am so sorry we don't have more time to talk, I will try to return here as soon as I can, but until then let's keep this between us ok?" she asked with pleading eyes and for the first time, Harrison recognized the kid in front of him as his own age.

Harrison got goose bumps when she touched his hand. "Alright," he stated simply. "I can't wait to see you again." As soon as he said the words, he realized how lame he sounded.

"Listen, I know you're in a hurry," he said. He was wearing a long night shirt under his robe, as he tended to get cold anyway, so he lifted his robe up and off.

"You can't go out in that robe, I grabbed the wrong one. Wear mine, I've only had it on for an hour or so."

He stood there in his long under-breaches and night gown, holding his robe at arms length. He only hoped she though it was sincere, and not silly.

"Oh may the gods bless you," she said as she took his robe eagerly. After she put the robe over her shoulders and clasped it tightly, she then quickly hugged Harrison before the boy knew what happened to him. Grabbing the bag of soiled clothing by the top string she headed for the door.

Over her should she said in a low tone, "I should be able to get back out here in another month, my father wants his daughter to keep up appearances she said with disgust. At least I have something now to look forward too."

She opened the door to the room and took one last look at Abby sleeping comfortably.

"That's a shame," he said. "I mean, that's my favorite robe!" he said with a grin.

"Oh," and she motioned to him that she had no time to wait at the door, for he was still standing at the spot he was hugged. The door closed behind her, and before she made it halfway down the stairs he caught up to her, practically knocking the door to Abby's room off the hinges in the charge.

"I can have it sent to you by POOSH" she said as she started to walk fast down the next corridor. (OOC: POOSH = Post Office Of Safe Haven - yeah I thought the acronym was funny so....)

"Heh," Harrison chuckled. "Don't be silly, I was kidding. I only hoped I'd be able to see you again a little sooner is all."

"OH!" Harrison yelped, and grabber her arm to stop her for a second. He reached into a pocket on the robe and pulled out Clive. "Ok, we're good," he said restarting the rush.

Clive chattered angrily at being tossed about, and he skittered up Harrison's arm to sit on his shoulder.

"Ah," Harrison said, stopping again. "You know, I should probably take my leave of you here, being in my night-clothes and all. I rather doubt anyone in charge of you would care to see this..."

"Oh my that is a good point!" she said, stopping all at once just before the last stairwell that would lead to the common room and its leering children.

She stood for a moment, awkwardly caught between what she should say to the very helpful boy while also anxious in the knowledge that she was probably about to receive a lashing for the entire affair, with every turn passing equal to one more lashing.

"well...um." her left foot bobbled back and forth over her right ankle as he stammered.

Harrison knew she already in trouble. "Go," he said.

"Here," he said taking Clive down from his shoulder. "You can take Clive with you. When you release him, he will come back here. Maybe you can send him with a note to assure me you're alright."

Clive chittered and jumped happily back into his pocket-home.

Harrison smiled. "Go! You're late already."

Emmanuelle had no time to argue, without even looking back she sprinted down the steps with Clive in the procket of the boys robe that she now wore.

As she charged throught the common roon she didn't even care about the laughter that ensued or even the comments about her attire or questions on how it came to be on her, she just focused on getting to the entry.

The last door at the end of the hall was her target, on the other side, most likely her doom, but she hoped and prayed she would get to the entry before Myrtle.

Three steps away from the door it opened and in walked the Headmaster for the Orphanage with Deaconess Myrtle in tow, to say that they were stunned at her appearance and flushed face would have been an understatement.

Harrison turned back around to get a new robe from the Linen closet, with plans of avoiding anyone who saw the two of them leave togheter. Maybe he'd head out the back door and go check on Moose (A horse at the stable Harrison liked to visit) for a bit.

He could still smell the Cinnamon scent.
